Hello everyone,

I'm writing this in desperate hope to find some answers. I've been searching for many many years for information on my great great great grandfather. We think his name was Victor Steinbach Leino from Finland. His wifes name might possibly have been Tilda Maki, but I'm not 100% sure on this. Their son, my great great grandfather Gustoff Victor Leino was born in Finland (possibly in Luvia Finland) May 12 1882 and immigrated over to the USA, North Dakota. Unfortunately there are more then one Gustoff Leino near North Dakota, so it can get confusing as to which is my Gustoff. My uncle before he died said that our name may have changed, but he thought there was a connection with the name Steinbach or maybe stenback.

All Ive been able to find is info on Gustoff. So I made an ancestry account and tried to scrape together as much info on Gustoff as I could in hopes to find a connection in Finland. Side note Gustoff may have been in trouble with the law, a family rumor that he killed a man in his teens during a knife fight. He also only had one eye, lost it possibly in a fight. My father heard that he was a young man at the time he first came to the US no older then 16. And because of this he may have left the US and then came back. I have his immigration dates as 1905 or 1914 as he had written in the census records.

But Please if anyone finds any information, I would appreciate it...I've hit dead ends at every turn and I'm losing hope. :(

Hello Julia,

Luckily you have correct date of birth and place.
Here's the birth record in Luvia (2nd on left page): http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/kirjat/Kirkonkirjat/luvia/syntyneet_1871-1885_mko45-47/70.htm
Family in communion book 1873-1882 page 404: http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/kirjat/Kirkonkirjat/luvia/rippikirja_1873-1882_mko114-127/389.htm
Both parents seem to have been born in Kiukainen.
Later records available only for FFHA (SSHY) members. See: http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/index_eng.htm

The last one tells that father Viktor died 22 May 1905, son Gustaf Viktor now has surname Leino. He is later recorded on page 648 among "loose" folk: http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/sivut/jasenille/paikat.php?bid=22559&pnum=650
No specific notes about him during those years.

:) Jaska
