Hello Finlanders. I have been searching without success for my Finnish relatives and have not been able to find them outside of America. My 2nd great Grandmother was Anna G Hendrickson born in 1871 or 1872. Her immigration date is listed as different years in US census records 1882, 1887 and 1890 are dates listed. My 2nd Great Grandfather was Mat/Matt/Matthew/Matts (middle initial is either S or L both are listed in records) Hillman/Hellman born in 1859 or 1860. He also has several immigration dates given in US Census 1884 or 1887 are both listed. They were married in Ontario canada in 1891. My Great Grandmother Nelvin Alice Hillman was their first child born in Superior, Wisconsin followed by William (1893) Anna H (1896) Hilda (1897) Florence Teckla Hillman in 1902. They lived the rest of their lives in Superior Wisconsin. Any help would be a blessing.

There is a Finnish Genealogy Group on Facebook...wherein a recent search for Matt Hillman produced the following results...

The Matts Leander Hellman referred to could have been born to a shoemaker Johan Hellman in Såka, Karleby, married 17 Nov 1839 to Anna Greta Koski. They had 6 or 7 children.

I have looked into this couple, I found Johan and Anna on the LDS website. Johan died in 1866, with Matts being the youngest son and losing his father so young that is certainly a good reason for him to immigrate. I am confused about the dates though...Johan birthdate is given as July of 1812 and Anna is born in 1815 which makes her much older than 35 in 1859. I have also found this Matts Leander with the birthdate of 1960 (which is the most common listed) in an article about Halsua River Island 60 miles from Kokkula.

Matts Johansson, 1796
Johan Mattson (s.27.3.1826) and his wife Kaisa (b. 3/15/1829) received eight children, three of whom died. Kaisa himself died as a child to bed 33 years old (1862). House books can also be found mention of rengistä: Abraham Abrahamsson s.1833 Lestijärvi. Become Teerijärvi 1855 (Afgätt 1856).
Mariana (s.1831) married (Maag = in-law), Anders Pehrsson Ahlbäck (s.3.6.1827) with. They had five children: Anna Lisa s..2.4.1850, Johan August s.20.3.1851, Maria mathilda s.18.6.1857, Selma Gustava s.1.4.1860, Mariana s.12.11.1862. The family moved to Perho .
