Edwards, John Arnold John Arnold Edwards of Myrtle Beach South Carolina died on August 23, 2016 after a 2 year illness. Born January 31, 1924 in Brooklyn N.Y. to Finnish immigrants, John and Sophie (Westerholm) Edwards nee VViittikko, he was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, the US Military Academy at West Point (class of '48) and the University of Michigan (1952). During his life he was a fighter and test pilot, NASA Director of Operations (Gemini and Skylab), Associate Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for R&D, Safety Planning Director for Ford Motor Company, Vice President of USAA Cardeal and Engineering Consultant for Vehicle accident and safety design. He was preceded in death by his wife Betsy Rice Edwards, 2nd wife Eunice Anderson Edwards and daughter Dr. Elizabeth Ann Edwards & survived by his son John Charles Edwards, his wife Jenny Burchett Edwards and step daughters, Elizabeth Mazart, Cynthia Masters and Kathryn Meehan. As a first generation Finnish American he was a modest, temperate and quiet man of deep intellect. For all his life he was a loving husband and father, a man of strong convictions and even deeper feelings. He maintained close friendships from childhood, military, public and private service throughout his life. Living in Myrtle Beach, for his last 25 years, he was an active member of NARFE, The Air Force Association, the Kiwanis, The Friends of the Library of North Myrtle Beach, donor to the Miracle League (Special needs) ball field and a proud member of the Order of Daedalians. Our deep gratitude goes to Dr. Trask and Dad's caregiver Erika for bringing dignity and some small quality of life to his last few years. Jenny and John Edwards would like to express that it was a great privilege to be able to care for and grow closer to such a good man. He will be missed. Viewing will be on Sunday Aug 28th from 2 to 4pm at McMillan-Small funeral home in Myrtle Beach.
