Finland will start Robot bus service this fall. A pair of electric-powered Easymile EZ-10 vehicles which carry up to 12 people will be in service. They will have an operator onboard in case of emergencies, and will travel 11 kilometers per hour (7 mph).

Wild wolves are declining in population. Conservation groups are worried after a new census found numbers far below what is naturally sustainable. There are about 150-180 wolves living in Finland, where the government awards licenses to hunt the animals. The Finnish Nature League said the culling of wolves in the last few years had worsened the animal's prospects by killing pack leaders, family groups and dispersing packs.

Linus Torvalds announced his SPP candidacy. He is 71 years old and a former Yle journalist. He was selected to the European Parliament in 2012. The presidential election will be held 28 January 2018.

A portrait by Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946) titled "My father" was auctioned off in early June at Sotheby's auction house in London. The painting was sold for c 250,000 euros to an unnamed buyer.

Finland is getting ready to entomb its nuclear waste on Olkiluoto Island at the bottom of a tunnel that is 3 miles through granite bedrock. Early in the next decade the first of what will be nearly 3,000 sealed copper canisters will be lowered into the hole. The holes and tunnels will be sealed with clay and eventually abandoned.
