My grandmother, Jenny Malvina Piispanen, emigrated on the SS Majestic from Saarijarvi in 1903. She came alone, she was 14 and had a note pinned to her coat giving an address in Ashtabula. I can't seem to track any Finnish ancestory, my mom swears that Jenny was from Kuopoo.

My grandfather, Urho Kauppila (1884-1959), emigrated with his mother, Lena in 1886. They came to Fairport Harbor to meet my great grandfather, Mattias who had been in the US since 1882. The family name was changed to Gustason at some point. My mom thinks that the family was fom Ylistaro. This is where another problem starts as there isn't any immigrant ship or passport info for the 1880s. I can't find any Kauppila Hiski records for the right time/location.

Does anyone have a suggestion for what to do next?

Thanks,
Jennifer Ripley

I found this site which deals with immigration records 1882 and thereafter.Immigration records (http://www.archives.ca/02/020202/0202020401_e.html)

If you go to http://www.google.com and type US immigration records 1882 in the search box you'll come up with more websites.
