Hej igen, Finlander Forum members,

My sixth great grandfather, Joseph Jacobsson Bergling, was born in Storå in 1716. He died there on February 22, 1800. He married Lisa Grelsdotter.

Their son Simon (born 1735) was my ancestor.

Their marriage is listed on HisKi as:

marriage date 29.12.1734
Husband: farm: Storharo drg: Josph Jacobs:
Wife: p: Susanna Grelsdr farm: S.om brudg:

I have two questions:

1) What is the name of Susanna's farm (S.om brudg)?

2) Does anyone know the significance of the name Bergling?

You are all so very helpful.

Sandy

Sandy,

I suggest it (is) ought to be "samma som brudgummen" i.e. the same (farm) as the bridegroom. Joseph Bergling is listed as a soldier in HisKi so it is a soldier's name. Berg is hill, rock, mountain in English but Bergling is a construction without any definite meaning. Incidentally, there was a spy in Sweden with this name but the probability that they are related is nil ;)

I found that Joseph Jacobs: and Susanna Grelsdr had a son Simon christened on 3.10.1736.

Staffan,

Thank you for this information. I would have never deciphered the abbreviation for the "same farm as the bridegroom"!

Also, I must have entered Simon's birthdate incorrectly into my genealogy program. I had the HisKi Christening date also - and have changed his date of birth to "before October 3, 1736" - Thank you for pointing this out.
