I was checking this little place page by page for someone and found just a few Finns so it might be useful for Finnfest - here they are:

Bethlehem Lutheran in Florence WI, Swenson S 26-3

2u Jakob Abrahamsson, b. Jan 22 1873 at Qvesta - it looked like that to Jill Seaholm at Swenson but I could not locate such a parish in the new book that Swenson has. Maybe Ivesta or Iuesta or some such? Emigrated Nov 4, 1890.

3h Wilhelm Backlund, Finland, received 1906.
3w wife without given name, Finland
3s John Wilhelm Backlund, b. August 25 1889,Finland, conf Sep 16 1906.
No other data except removal to Commonwealth Wi.

6h John Sandstrom, b Jul 3 1870 at Jeppo, emigrated 1889.
6w Maria Sofia (f. Jakobson) Sandstrom, b Feb 6 1861 at Munsala, emigrated 1892.

6? Anna Youngell/Yonngell/Yanngell b Sep 29 1856 at Jeppo, emigrated 1892
4 kids but was she a widow, married?

6u Susanna Björn, Finland no other info

18h Frank Walford Koski b Dec 11 1889 at Lavia ? Finland, emigrated 1913 - he was at Crystal Falls Finnish church.

18? Mrs Hildah Olson, b Jan 7 1877 at Jakobstad - book says Sweden but no such parish so likely Finland.

22u Hulda Sofia Millesnorri ? (Jacobson) b Jan 30 1890 at Vasa Fi, no em data

That's it from Florence.

Hi Chuck,
Thanks, I copied and pasted to a Wisconsin file, which I can load onto a CD and take to Marquette's FinnGrandFest 2005. Wisconsin, especially Superior and communities nearby are good places to look, since the dream of owning your own farm could become reality and still not have to be too close to your workplace. Loggers were gone all winter a long ways away from Duluth, but with a railroad ticket they were back in civilization in May when the log drive ended.
Thanks,
Syrene

Alright, Kaj suggested this parish of Qvesta might be Qvista in Dalarna Sweden.
Turns out that it is indeed a village over there so this guy doesn't fit.

So why did the secretary write Finland? Jill and I agree that perhaps the writer was an English speaker taking information and when the guy said he'd come out of Finland, it was likely just assumed he was born in Finland.
But the image is below so that you don't think I've gone bonkers:)

Looking at the scan I think it also could be Svartå. A part of Karis in Nyland, Finland: What do you think?

6? Anna Youngell/Yonngell/Yanngell b Sep 29 1856 at Jeppo, emigrated 1892
4 kids but was she a widow, married? -That familyname Yongell. Is it possible that the "Y" is a "H". Hongell is a familyname.

22u Hulda Sofia Millesnorri ? (Jacobson) b Jan 30 1890 at Vasa Fi, no em data - ought to be: Millasnoore

Maybee it is Avesta in south of Dalarna.
About 200 km from Stockholm.

Sören in Fagersta near Avesta.

The problem is that the countryname is Finland. I also was thinking of some place in Sweden but looking like this it must be a place in Finland. Or am I wrong?

Hi Kaj,
I am looking at the fotocopy and by the same hand, the person above is from Elfsborg Sweden and that S is totally different so not an S for sure.

I suppose the only way would be to check the parish in Finland to see if he is there and maybe in Sweden.

I will be going to Swenson this afternoon and will check on the other comments.

Must say it seems unlikly to me too. But at that time the S as the first letter in the word looked different than those in the word. So to be sure you need to find a place or name with an S as the first letter.

But what about the secretary was she english, swedish, american or????
If the secretary just wrote down the name that she heard the first letter might well be a "Q" cause in some names a "K" in Swedish might sound like a "Q". Q was more frequent in older Swedish than today.
I also started to thing of the place Kustö also spelled Kuustö at that time. There you have a K that sounds like a Q. and you also find the ending of -sta or -stö. I've not found the spelling like Qustö. But I wouldn't even think it is unlikly that in some cases or by some people the name could have been written like that. Then we also have Keistö in the Åboland archipelago. So there might be towns like this if we just continue.

This scan will show that the same person wrote the information into the membership book and that the S and Q are quite distinct.

The letter Y is quite clear - the English pronunciation of H is the same as the Swedish so I don't know why it is as written.

On another page, I found another Finn and so another fotocopy - this is from the death index. I will write it here in the event the image disappears:0

Mrs Erick Wicklund, born August 1, 1870 in Little Socklet, Finland, died Feb 22, 1936.

An interesting note is that on the formal funerals list, she is described still as Mrs Erick and as a member but her name does not appear on the member pages for the Wicklund people.

Syrene, Mrs W is another for your list:)

ah, one more thing. On the confirmands list, I found the birthdate of John Wilhelm Backlund. He was born August 25 1889 in Finland. Wilhelm Backlund is his father so add this birthdate Syrene!

You are right. There is nothing unclear in the writing except for the place ;) So that has to be a farm and not a town or parish somewhere here. The only way to find that out would be to check the emigration (or immigration ) that we have from the passengerlists at the migrationinstitute, but I've not got access to those.
I'll try to check that Jeppo name. It might be an americanisation of the name Jungar too.

Mrs wiklunds birthplace "Little Socklet" is "Lill Socklot" (between Pedersöre and Nykarleby).

I've checked and found there are many farms or parts of farms in Finland called Kvistas, Kvistens a.s.o. "Kv" was earlier also written with Qv or Qu. So if the churchrecord says Finland we'll have to believe it is Finland and some of those farms. But which parish? There will be a need for a detective to find that out.

Got a suggestion today that Jacob Abrahamsson could be from Vreta, Kimito If the beginnig just is a decoration for a V. Comparing the first letter from his town with the F in Finland for Mrs Wiklund you might also ask if the first letter could be a F.

Hello all !
Qvesta seems to be Qvevlax/Kvevlax.
In Jeppo parish records, year 1896 is follow: Jakob Abrahamss. Hjort, farmerson (bondson) from Kvevlax and Ida Sofia Mietala, former maid (fd. piga) from Jeppo Mietala received certificate for marriage in Wi, USA.

In the book:"Finlandssvenskarna i Amerika" by Anders Myhrman I found follow: "Many Swedish-speaking immigrants from Finland settled in Commonwealth ... - Later many families moved to Lake Stevens or Hartford in the state Washington, among others the well-known family Abrahamsson Jack from Kvevlax and Ida from Jeppo".

- "Jakob Abrahamsson (Hjort) from Kvevlax, his wife Ida from Jeppo and 11 other swedishfinn immigrants founded The Luth. Ebenezer Church in Hartford, WA".

- " Ida Abrahamsson, who often wrote in F.A (Finnish American) and Norden, was wide known of our folk in Hartford".

Free render into English -:).

Does anybody happen to know the birthdate of Ida Sofia Mietala-Abrahamsson?

Bert was correct about the surname. I located this death in the Death Certificates of Finns in Snohomish County, Washington, 1907-1947.

JUNGELL, EDWIN E. -- Born March 3, 1898, Commonwealth, Wisconsin. Died Nov. 30, 1938, Everett General Hospital, Everett, Wash. Cause of death: chronic nephritis; hypertension. Husband of Vera. Millworker, lumber mill. Father: John Jungell (b. Finland). Mother: Rose Johnson (b. Finland). Informant: Joell Jungell, Everett, Wash. Burial Nov. 23, 1938, Evergreen Cemetery, Everett, Wash.
If anyone is searching for information on the Jungell family more Death Index records can be found in 1927, 1929, 1938 and 1941 for other family members.
ABRAHAMSON, AGDA AMELIA -- Born July 12, 1899, Wisconsin. Died Apr. 29, 1919, Everett, Wash. Cause of death: pulmonary tuberculosis; fecal fistula. Single. Father: Jacob Abrahamson (b. Finland). Mother: Ida (b. Finland). Informant: Jacob Abrahamson, Everett, Wash. Burial May 2, 1919, Machias, Wash.

Could this man be a nephew of Jacob Abrahamson (Hjort)?
HJORT, ERICK -- Born June 1, 1877, Finland. Died Jan. 12, 1943, Hartford, Wash. Cause of death: probably cerebral hemorrhage; hypertension. Husband of Ida. Farmer. Father: Abraham Abrahamson (b. Finland). Burial Jan. 16, 1943, Everett, Wash.

Thanks for the additional information. The age difference between the brothers had been so great I had speculated on the relationship, but 11 children easily explains it. It looks as though another brother John may also have emigrated and lived in the area because I came across another listing in the Snohomish Death Index for
HJORT, JOHANNA -- Born December 6, 1862, Finland. Died Dec. 3, 1939, Marysville, Wash. Cause of death: carcinoma of stomach; debilitation. Wife of John Hjort. Father: Arvid Sander (b. Finland). Mother: Marie Quivlander (b. Finland). Informant: Fred Hjort, Marysville, Wash. Burial Dec. 6, 1939, Marysville, Wash.

Margareta, you can email Merle Reinikka by clicking on her name above the list at the GSF. She may be able to provide or point you towards more information than has been listed in the index eg.birthdate for Ida may be on the original records just not included in this listing.

Thanks, Chuck. I already have the entire Tast line, so won't need any more info about them. I didn't have anything on Slangar.
