Does anyone have the parents and siblings of Matts Vilhelmsson Söderman-Granlund-Klockars, b. 22 Jul 1855, Pörtom, married 1876 to Brita Lovisa Mattsdotter Klockars, b. 11 Sep 1856, Malax. They emigrated to Coos Bay, Oregon and had about 8 children altogether - a couple were born in Finland. I'm also interested in knowing if Matts had a brother Albert/Alfred, b. ca 1865/67 who emigrated to the US. Some of his children took the surname Aberson.

Thanks,

June

My girlfriend was married to a Burton Klockars here in Coos Bay MANY years ago. I looked in our phone book but no Klockars are listed. I doubt she knows where he is , as this was back in the 60's, and they divorced. I will ask around however, and if any luck, will post it here. Kay from Coos Bay

My last name is Sanman, but I'd be a Klockars if my great grandfather (Karl Edvard Klockars) hadn't changed his last name for unknown reasons when he immigrated to the US from Vaasa, Finland in the 1920's. I live in Milwaukie, Oregon USA outside of Portland. Can anyone help me find my Klockars relatives?

I have a lot of Klockars names in my database, but you'll need to give more information about dates, etc. in order to know which Klockars family your great grandfather came from. Did Karl Edvard marry in Finland or the US? If he married in Finland, what was her name? Etc., Etc....

Karl Edvard Klockars was born March 17, 1859 in Finland. He became a naturalized American citizen on Nov. 20, 1924. I'm not sure at what point he changed his last name to Klockars (or why) but it was probably after he arrived in the US.
I don't know the name of his wife, but if I can find out from my dad, Rodger Gary Sanman, I'll let you know.
His children were:
1. Alfred Edwin Sanman (my grand father) who was born in 1907 in Portland, Oregon and died in 1967 in Portland, Oregon. He married Juanita Sanman (nee: Sykes).
2. Edward D. Sanman
3. Anna Margaret Sanman (born 1910).
A side note: I contacted a Johanna Klockars via e-mail in Finland, who passed me on to Matti Klockars who passed me on to Fredrik Forsberg, and they are both also assisting me. I received an e-mail from Fredrik this morning saying he was forwarding my information to you since you are a Klockars expert, and you had already responded to my post here: "SMALL WORLD".

Yes, Fredrik Forsberg is my cousin and he has also sent me an e-mail about this family. I don't have any record of them. Several years ago I tried to help a Klockars family in Coos Bay, Oregon. They were looking for Matts Abrahamsson Klocas/Klockars, b. 1855, who came to the US 1880, returned to Finland to bring back his wife and 2 children in 1882. Matts died in Coos bay in 1917. His children were Matts, Stella, Ida, Emma, Victor, Julia, William, Esther, Ralph. Son Matts married Eliza Weir. I was not able to find any record of Matts Abrahamsson Klockars in Finland.

The people who asked for my help claimed Matts had a brother Albert Alfred Abrahamsson who took the name Aberson. Albert was b. 1866 in Karleby, Finland. But I never found a record for this man in Karleby for any year. Albert married Mary Francis Stevens. I think the family lived in Portland, Eugene and Albany, Oregon. They had 7 children: David, William, Jeanette, Eunice, Edna, Murle, Ralph. Does any of this sound familiar? If so, I can give you more details. I could never find any record of Matts or Albert in Finland.

I just did a check of all parishes on HisKi for a Karl Edvard, b. 17.3.1859. There were 12 births in various parishes, but none on that month and day. The closest was in Nagu, Biskopsö village where a Karl Edvard was born 14 Mar 1859 to Isak Carlsson and Ulrika Carolina.

I did a check for a Karl Klockars born in 1859 and found one in Solf, b. 4 Dec 1859 to Matts Johansson Klockars and Ulrica Beata - but the son was named Karl Johan.

It's possible your birthdate could be off a bit.

June,
Thank you for looking for me. It is possible the birthdate is off a bit - I don't even know where that date came from. My mom and dad had it in a file. Hopefully, Fredrik will be able to help me.
I'd seen the previous posts about the Klockars in Coos Bay, but none of those names ring a bell with me.
I'll talk to my family more and see if I can come up with some more details.
In looking up the Klockars history, I ran into several connections to the "Granlund" family. I know a Bill Granlund here in Portland through my business, but I haven't spoken to him in at least five years. Is it possible he is distantly related to me?
Thanks,
Wayne

I'm still trying to find out information on my great grandfather, Karl Edvard Sanman who changed his last name from Klockars to Sanman. He was naturalized American citizen on November 20, 1924 and the certificate of naturalization says he lived at 881 Weidler in Portland, Oregon.
His son (my grandfather) was Alfred Edwin Sanman, and his birthday I've previously posted on this site. Alfred's wife was Juanita C. Sanman (nee: Sykes) and they were married on Dec. 7, 1930 in Stevenson, Washington.
I'm trying to find my ancestors and more information on Karl Edvard Sanman. His wife's name may have been Julia.
Can anyone help me?
If I can find any more details I'll post them here ASAP.
Thanks,

I'm not sure this is the right Karl Edvard, but who knows. The date is 28 years after the date I have, but apparently may date may not be correct. On the other hand 2 of Karl Edvard's three children were born apparently in 1907 and 1910 when he would have been in his 20's if the 1888 date is correct. I've not heard that they were in Michagan before. Can anyone else look in to this a bit further.

Denise,
Good work.
Now my dad knows his grandmother's name. The census shows an "Emily" or similar as a spouse, but I noticed no spouse for 1920 (it says widow) for Karl Sanman. Then the death certificate dated 1918 for "Amelia" (sounds like "Emily"). So I could deduce that "Emily" or more likely "Amelia" was my great grandmother and she passed away in 1918.
On your other posts, Juanita Sanman (nee: Sykes) was my grandmother, and Alfred Edwin Sanman was her husband (he is Karl Sanman's son). Everybody knew Alfred Edwin as "Edwin" or "Ed". I believe he was in the Merchant Marine or worked on ships or something - I'll check with my dad.
Edwin Dale Sanman's marriage info from Reno, NV is my uncle and he lives in Lake Oswego near me.
It's getting late, I'll post more tomorrow.
Thanks for all the effort.

June & Denise,
This morning I received an e-mail from Mappi Klockars in Finland. I think he has found my great grandfather Karl E. Klockars (Sanman) parish.
The e-mail reads as follows:
I called the parish of Korsholm (Mustsaari) and they found a person Carl
Edvard Klockars from Höstves, Korsholm (Old Wasa). However, this person
was born on 16th of March, 1859, but it is probably the same person? They
will find out what happened to him, if and when he changed parish or moved
abroad.

I just had a call from the parish secretary who had the following
information:

Carl Edvard Klockars, born 16 of March, 1959 was married to Johanna
Axelsdotter (Axelsdaughter) Sparf (born 9 of April 1860) in 1883. They had
three children 1) Selma K., b. 18.5.1884, died 20.12.1887 in Finland, 2)
Carl Werner, b. 9 November 1885 and 3) Johan Edward b. 19.4.1887.

Carl Edward moved to Sweden (!), the time point is not known, but his wife
and two children went to the US on 23.8.1889. Carl E:s wife Johanna died
30 of May 1902 in Portland !.Carl Edward probably went to USA via Sweden.

So this must be the story

There are still Klockarses living in Höstves, I will find out their names
and e-mail addresses.

At the moment I am sitting at my work place and the book I am referring to
is at home, I will send the information to you in the evening.

The person to contact for the above information at the office of Korsholm
parish is ann-katrin.svenns*evl.fi

I will mail you later about the book.

yours mk

I've just e-mailed Ann Katrin at the parish, and I'll let you know what I find.
Thanks again for all the great work. My family will be very happy. They have never been able to find this information before.

Can anyone find a marriage record for my great grandfather, Karl Edvard Sanman? His first wife Johanna died in Oregon in 1902, and his first child (Alfred Edwin Sanman) with his second wife was born in 1914. So the marriage was between those dates. His 2nd wife to be was likely named Amelia or Emily. They were like married in Multnomah County, Oregon USA.
For that matter I'd also like to find the marriage record of his previous wife who passed away in Oregon in 1902 Johanna Sanman (nee:Sparf). They apparently were married in Finland.
Please help me if you can.

I've attached here the ahnentafel that June Pelo graciously prepared for me. It has my family history going back to the mid-1700's. I believe that this information originated from the Korsholm parish in Finland where we have traced Karl Edvard to.
I'm not sure what else the parish can provide, and I've e-mailed Ann-Katrin Svenns at the parish. I understand she is a valuable resource, but it was suggested to me that I should post here to see if others may be able to help me. I guess I'd like to go back even farther if possible, as well as find descendants (especially living) of Carl Edvard's siblings.

I am trying to find a passenger list or ship's manifest for my great grandfather's (Karl Edvard Klockars) first journey to the US. According to his naturalization papers here in the US he arrived in New York "on or about July 10, 1887" on an unknown ship. I already have a ship's manifest for his second journey in 1901.
It has been suggested to me that perhaps this information would be available on the Göteborg Lists, and I'd like to know if anyone has access to these lists and can help me. Karl was born in 1859 in Höstves.
Thanks,
Wayne Sanman
