Kaarlo Fredrik Haglund b. Vihdi June 4, 1878 d. March 29, 1915 Breen Twp. MI married to :

Karoliina Vilhilmiina Grindahl b. UL Pyhajarvi May 22, 1881 d. Breitung Twp. MI April 15, 1937.

Kaarlo emigrated to the US in 1910 with his wife Karoliina and two daughters following in Jan. 1912

Siiri Josephine Haglund b. Nurmijarvi August 23, 1906 d. February 2, 1977 Detroit, MI

Karoliina remarried soon after the death of Kaarlo. Her second husband was Matti Perttola and I know more about his family than I do about the Haglund/Grindahl side.

I've been looking for aunts, uncles or cousins for years.

Hi Jeanine,
I found Karoliina and her second husband in the 1920 census in Breen. The spelling of the names is kind of strange but I'll list them as they appeared to me.

1920
Mattie, 39
Minnie, 38
Josephine, 13
Irene, 8
Helen, 5
Eilnia, 3 (sp? daughter)
Tivio Albert, 2 (sp? son)

1930
Matti, 49
Minnie, 49
Helen, 15
Aile, 14 (daughter)
Doeva, 12 (son)
Arne, 10
Hugo, 8
Ewald, 7

The 1930 census show Minnie as marrying when she was 34 so it seems that the children from Helen and after were Minnies.

Thanks for the census info. At least I now have some correct names.

The only living Perttola, at least as of 2 years ago is Helen.

Hugo d. July 1944
Albert d. 1990's
Arne d. 1990's
Aili d. 2002
Ewald d. December 6, 2004

I actually decend from the Haglund side through Siiri Josephine.

I should note here that most of the family members did not go by their Finnish names.

From this information after Karl went to America it looks as though Miina may have returned to her parents where Irja was born in Pyhäjärvi UL, (On HisKi parish is shown as Karkkila (ent. Pyhäjärvi Ul) - Högfors). There are lots of Gröndahl names at
Siikala village there.Unfortunately births only go up to 1850 but marriages go to 1890.

Please look at the Original manifests for both ships as they have physical descriptions of Miina & Kaarlo - height, hair & eye colours
Also you will see that Miina & Siiri were correctly listed on the manifest just not in the index.

Hoping this helps to give you more places to search for those elusive relatives,
Jeanette

I always thought Finland was special. Someone in America did too
they called it Fineland :)
