Here is a brief explanation of the term GEDCOM. It is an abbreviation that stands for GEnealogy Data COMmunications. It's a language by which different genealogy software programs talk to one another. The purpose is to exchange data between dissimilar programs without having to manually re-enter all the data on a keyboard. For more details and technical explanations read:

At one point I had the idea to create my own family tree/genealogy software program. Then I began to investigate GEDCOM standards and quickly gave up on that idea. Maybe one day when I'm bored and have nothing better to do. It's amazing the complexity of the standard!
