Greetings from Vasa

My name is Margareta Leppinen, born Gunell in Jeppo, Finland. I am married with Raimo, born in Alahärmä. We live in Vasa. We have a son with wife and a granddaughter.

My aunt gave me inspiration long ago, when she shared with others of her interest in local history and genealogy. For the present I have been researching in Jeppo, Nykarleby, Pedersöre, Alahärmä, Kortesjärvi, Kauhajoki, Kurikka.... Many of my relatives emigrated and some of them have been lost. My expection is to find some threads in this forum and also help, if I can.

Happy New Year 2005!

Margareta

Hello Bert,
Yes, William is my grandfather's brother. I remember him as a sociable man, full of fun.
Your face seems not familiar to me but you are a son of Levälä family - so we are related many times over. I suppose we understand eath other better in Jeppo dialect -:).

Hej Bert,

I've been writing to a new Finlander member Christian Dahlin who has Dahlin and Tarvonen names in his family. He said he had an uncle Runar Dahlin who lived in California and died in 2001. I noticed that you have Runar Johan Edvin Dahlin, b. 1912 who went to the US. Are these the same people? I told Christian about you and hopefully he will contact you.

After Hildas death, he emigrated to America. The last known recidens was Rock Springs, Wyoming.

Bert,

I have been in contact with Christian Dahlin as he and I
are 4th cousins through Anna Lovisa Jakobsdr Forsbacka
and Hans Andersson Kronqvist. Anna is my second great grand aunt.

He picked up on my name on Finlander Forum and after a
few e-mails asking who my ancestors were we connected.

Interesting how a name that my grandfather took when he
came to America as his birth name was Håkansson.

I found Matts Gunell on two separate arrivals in the US. First time, Matts Gunell, age 19, single, laborer, from Jeppo, parents Matts and Sanna Gunell in Jeppo. Going to Ironwood, MI. Arrived Boston 22 Nov 1907 SS Saxonia.
Second time, 28 Jul 1913, SS Carmania, Ellis Island, lines 6-7
Gunell, Sanna, 20 single, servant, destination Ironwood, MI to brother-in-law Jan Jansson. Father Matts Gunell, Jeppo.
Gunell, Matts, 25, married, laborer, same dest. wife Hilda Gunell, Jeppo. Listed as Sanna's brother.

Thanks Christina, Rock Spring seems to be the next step.
Thanks Karen, I know this family -:). Parents Matts and Sanna came back to Finland. Daughter Ida Maria married Jan Janson or John Johnson in Ironwood MI 1901, date unknown. They are declared dead in Finland 23 Nov.1971. It is a surprise that also Hilda emigrated. She and their son are buried in Jeppo cemetery. In the Inst. of Migration's passengerlist is only Matts Leander mentioned.

I did not mean to imply that Hilda emigrated. She is listed as his nearest relative at home. She was not with him. He was with his sister Sanna. When I wrote" same destination", I meant he was going to the same place as Sanna. Karen

Margaret,
I think I found Matts WWI Draft Registration. The date of birth matches. He is registered as Lee Gunell, 16 Aug 1888, alien, has not declared intention, from Wasa Land, Finland, miner, married, works at Pabst Mine, Ironwood, lives at 30? Birch, Ironwood. Says has crippled fingers on left hand. This was in 1918.
On Gogebic Range Genealogy Society obituaries, there are 5 entries for Ida Johnson, one for an Ida M. Johnson. Dates of death given are 5/13/1940, 6/21/1951, 10/3/1965, 11/27/1967 and the one for Ida M 8/27/1971. There are far too many John Johnson entries to list. There were 17 John Johnsons in Ironwood in 1910. I did find a John and Ida Johnson on the 1920 Census in Bessemer, which is very close to Ironwood. Her age would have her born abt. 1885-86. Says she came to US in 1905. Have 3 children, Jenney age 12, Edward 9 and George 6. First two born in WI, last in MI. Karen

I didn't find anything more on Lee or Matts, but I did find the correct John and Ida in the 1920 and 1930 census. Looks like the one in Bessemer wasn't yours.
1920 Ironwood,Gogebic MI, on East Ash St
Johnson, John, 42, married, Finn, US 1898, nat 1901, laborer iron mine
Ida was 40, US 1896, son Leonard was 18, born MI, laborer iron mine, daughter Elna was 15, born MI and daughter Ingbert? was 8, born MI
1930 same place, John is 52, married at 23, says US 1898, iron miner
Ida is 50, says US 1899 here. No children at home anymore.
SSDI confirms the date of death for Ida Johnson born 10 Sep 1879 and died Aug 1971, so she was the Ida M Johnson I found previously.
SSDI shows Leonard Johnson born 29 Nov 1901 and died Sep 1986 Ironwood, Gogebic, MI. They have his birth as 29 not 22.
