Mike,

I noticed your request of some time ago about Owner's Marks. I have some for Nedervetil but none for Vörå. Perhaps someone on the Forum knows where you can find them?

Yes, Sigfrid Bertilsson Storkarhu is my ancestor. I am looking for the Farm/Owners Mark or Insignia of the Storkarhu farm. I will take a look at your site. Thank you for the link. Do you have narrative information about this line?

Michael,
I talked with Harald Svens in Rejpelt, Vörå, who is farming your ancestors´ land.
He explained to me on the phone what Svens farm´s owner´s mark looks like.
It is a capitol M with wide legs and a stroke on either leg. I tried to draw one. To me it looks more like a tooth or a tulip..
One day, maybe, I can fin the real mark and send you a picture.
Harald is interested in your web page. Please give me the address.
Greetings

Dear Torbjörn:

Thank you for researching this. Your discovery is very exciting.

My genealogy website is down until I complete some research, and figure out how to exclude information about living relatives. When I first created the site I did not make sure that birthdates of people still alive were excluded, and the existence of one person (US/Irish) was a skeleton and one of my Aunts objected. So I am redoing the site; I will have it up again in the not to distance future.

If you can convince Harald Svens to fax you the owners mark, I would like to add it to the site as historical information.

Here is a temprorary site you direct Harald Svens to. It has my onepage introductory page on Svens (par tof the book I am writing on all eight family lines). Please look at the 4 possible cofigurations of owners marks and tell me which is closest.

Thank you for your help! If there is anything genealogical I can do you you, tell me.

Michael,

>Please look at the 4 possible cofigurations of owners marks and >tell me which is closest.

Since I have not seen the mark in situ myself, I will ask Harald to send you more info.
However, a wild guess would be nr 2 from the right, but with only one cross line. On either leg.

Based on your description, the Svens mark could be similar to the mark of Mattis Efftedall of Norway.

You´re right.
The reason for the similarity is obvious. Mattis and Mickel (or Mårten) have the same initial. You have lots of those Ms in your family tree.

Jeppokryddorna, a spelmanslag/pelimanit/fiddler's group, of exceptional verve and harmony, was selling a sweatshirt with all the Jeppo farm brands/marks on the back along with the farm names. I wonder if they remember their source. I have occasionally seen such marks collected and published as part of a hembygds study circle's book about traditions and heritage of a parish. It might be interesting to have a collection of those on either the Finlander webpages or the SFHS webpages.
I have often pondered if the New Sweden colonists are the source of the USA's cowboy/ranch brands, as well as the log cabin, summer/winter linen and wool woven patterns, and serpentine fences.

Syrene, these links may answer some of your questions concerning log cabins. They also contain a brief history of the New Sweden settlement.

Michael,
sorry about the confusion with the owner´s mark!
Here comes the original from 1812. Michel is not related to us, but it is the same nr 3 Storkarhu. There were three farmers on the same nr 3 at the time.
So, back where we started. It looks like a tulip or a tooth. You just add the spur on the left or right leg.
Advent greetings

And a Happy (American) Thanksgivings Day to you!

I think I see the one you are talking about. Tell me how to add the spur, please
