Hi,

I'm looking for information on Johan Jakob Henriksson RAUMA b.05-06-1851 in Kaustby, Finland.
He emigrated to USA and died there. I've no date of emigration.

Hi Tommy,
Without more details to confirm his identity, it will be difficult to find the correct person in the census. Do you know if he was married, spouse name, children's names??? That would help.

I did find the following on Ellis Island site. The age is about right. But when I go to view the actual manifest, it displays the incorrect image. I'll try to poke around some other sites to try to get to the correct ship and see if I can find him. It looks promising.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks' a lot for the information. Jaakko might be the right person. He was the only brother to my ggf from my mothers side. He was not married when emigrated.
About 1930, after his death in the US, an inquiry of possible close relations came to Kaustby. At first nobody figured out that it was Jaakko and no heritage could be claimed.
So he died about 1930 and it seems he did not get married in the US, at least no childern.
I'd be grateful for any additional information.

I checked the Institute of Migration website and found this entry: Rauma Jaakko 02.05.1896. This would coincide with the ship arrival record I located. I don't have full access to that site but others on the Forum do and perhaps could check the details to verify if he was from Kaustby.

I did see a Jaakko Rauma in the Passport records but his date of birth is much later. Also, there's a Johan Henrik with a later date of birth.

Were is the belongings going when there is no will or close relatives found ? Is there a data base for such events ?

Tommy, I think it's going to be rather difficult to find anything about his death without knowing where he lived. There are online databases that are searchable but we're not sure at this point what name he used while in the US.

I can't seem to find any Rauma people born in 1851 in the census index. I also tried Henrickson in Iosco County, MI and couldn't find anything.

I'll keep looking and see if we can't turn up something.

Reading the image Kevin posted. I recalled the Index at Gen Soc of Fin for East Tawas, MI where I found a Johan Rauma as a sponsor to a birth in Eveleth,Mn. Perhaps some of the other names mentioned are familiar to you and may help to decide whether this could be your man.

Unfortunately nothing to identify whether this is your Johan Rauma, however it does show the Rauma name can definitely be found in MN.

Here are the particulars from Emigrant Register for that Jaakko Rauma, age 44, Kokkola to East Tawas, MI, on SS Urania 2 May 1896. No info on ship from England. The other Jaakko Rauma was born in 1864 and was from Nivala, Oulu, was married to Anna Greeta, born 1874, who was travelling with him. They left 4 Feb 1916.I found them on the 1930 census for Artesia, Norwalk Township, Los Angeles county, CA. He is 65, emigrated 1916, married at 37, a dairyman. Wife Annie is 54, daughter Hilma is 14. I also found a John J Rauma who died 11 Mar 1951 at age 58 on the Washington Death Index.

I checked the church in East Tawas, MI, Eveleth MN, Hibbing MN and Virginia MN because these little places where on the same Minnesota film.

I did not find John Henrikson (Rauma) - I checked funeral lists and nothing there and I paid attention to spellings.

The gen site in Finland has this about a church in East Tawas:

"East Tawas (Iosco Co.) - Suomi Synod
Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church
[Source: RW]"

This is likely the place Jeanette referred to in her posting. This guy is really elusive!

As Chuck said, this guy really is elusive.

I've checked the 1900, 1910 & 1920 census for any John and any Jacob born between 1850-1854 in both Minnesota and Michigan and though there were a couple of promising Hen(d)ricksons, none were the correct fellow.

Usually when the last name is grossly misspelled, they'll turn up with a first name search. I even checked some "John ?????" and they weren't correct. It's possible that this guy appears on a census record where the ink is very faint and consequently he didn't get included in the index. I can't think of any other reasons.

I'm sorry I couldn't find him for you but if you happen to locate any additional detail, repost and I'll try to search again. :(

When and where was Jaakko Rauma born? I have the birth records for Karleby/Kokkola up to 1859. I have a lot of Rauma names in my database and the majority were born in Kaustby.

I have been searching for this family for years. Could someone possibly help me on this? I know, Jaakko Rauma used the name John Rauma in the USA. He lived in California, Elmonte. Hilma married Weaver. Any help are most welcome.
