This query was on Finngen. Perhaps someone on Finlander can help her:

I am trying to locate information on Johannes Strong born 1861 and Maria Sofia Strong born 1861. They emigrated from Kollby, a village in Pedersore, Finland to the USA in 1899 with their daughters Alina Sofia born 1885 and Jenny
Maria born 1890.

Alina Sofia got married to Otto Lundquist and had two daughters, Inez (1904) and Hazel (1908).

Hazel married a Charles Elliot and Inez married Edward Davis.

Any information about these Strong's would be appreciated as I am researching it for a friend.

Their name was originally Strang and changed to Strong.

I have some Strang/Strong names from Pedersöre, but can't connect to these.

Town and state would help - maybe they joined a Swedish church there:)

Chuck,

All they know is they went to America - no town given. If I find out more, I'll post it.

Thanks,

Hi June,

Searching the 1910 census I was surprised to learn how popular the name Lundquist was. 934 Heads of Household alone. These are the closest matches for Otto.
Surname,GivenName,Age,Sex,Race,Birthplace,County,L ocality,T624-Roll,Part,Page,Subpage,State
LUNDQUIST,O G,48,M,W,SWE,HENNEPIN,6-WD MINNEAPOLIS,703, 1,30,A,MN

LUNDQUIST,OTTO F,44,M,W,SWE,MONROE,1-WD KEY WEST,165,2, 16,A,FL

LUNQUIST,OTTO,37,M,W,SWE,KNOX,RIO TWP,299,2,54,B,IL

Has the SSDI been searched? Inez & Hazel and their partners should probably be on it. If the actual date of birth is known it would help lots although the year will have restrict responses.

If you take a look in Jaska Sarell's database on Talko Genealogy you will find lots of information about this Strang/Strong. I am personally familiar to the descendants of the other Strang who stayed in Kållby.

For example Karl W. Strang was a good sportsman in bicycle sports. I have seen pictures of him from about 1920.

Åke W. Strang died some years ago. He was a successful businessman and finnish champion in veteran class in walking. One of Åke's children lives in Nykarleby.

Thanks, Christian. I'll check it out. The way I understood it, this person is trying to find what happened to the family who went to America. We're now checking with relatives in Finland to see if anyone knows where they went to in America.

June, I found Maria Sofia, Alina Sofia and Jenny Maria on Emigrant Register. Passport under Strang. From Pedersöre, passport issued 09/06/1902. No Johannes. Only says to Amerika.
I also found the family in Minnesota on the 1910-1920-1930 census.
1910 Census, part of Chisholm Village, St Louis, MN
Strong, John, head, age 48, Finn/Swede, to US 1890, drillman, diamond drill
Strong, Sophy, wife, 48, 6 children, 4 alive, Finn/Swede to US 1902
Strong, Jennie, daughter, 19, single, Finn/Swede US 1902, sales drygoods

1920 Census, Chisholm, St Louis, Pine St
Strong, John, head, 58, to US 1885, naturalized 1916, laborer iron mine
Strong, Sofia, wife, 58, US 1902
Strong, Jennie, 28, single, clerk, drygoods store

1930 Census, same location
Strong, John, head, owns house, 68, married at 19, to US 1886, some kind of foreman for the village
Strong, Sofia M, wife, 68, married at 19, to UD 1886? lots of conflicting dates here.

On the MN Death Index, I found Maria Sofia Strong died 13 May 1946 in St Louis county.
I found several possible entries for John Strong based on the fact that he was still alive in 1930.

Thanks, Karen. Good information and I'll pass it along. Now we know where the family lived. I have a cousin who was born in Chisholm, but at a later date, so he wouldn't have known the family.

I just found this reference to a Mrs. Sofia Strong in the book "Finland Swedes in America" by Carl J. Silfversten, 1931. Nothing more was mentioned about her, but wouldn't be surprised if she was the wife of Johan Strang/Strong:

Betfage Baptistförsamling i Chisholm,Minn. (Information was sent in by J. E. Ström.)

Finland Swedes began arriving in Chisholm in 1902. Among them was Mrs. Sofia Strong, a native of Kållby, Pedersöre. She had been a member of the Baptist congregation in Jakobstad. In the summer of 1903 Mrs. Strong established a Sunday School with 10 students which still continues and has proven to be a great blessing to the whole community. The activities carried on today are the fruits of her small beginnings.
