I received the following information from a genealogist in Finland:

The earlier surnames are almost like addresses for people who lived in Ostrobothnia. When they moved from place to place and a new child was born, in the "book for baptized", the name recorded indicated where they were when the child was born and baptized. Some genealogists list the "surnames" with the birthplace name first, followed by the various other names, and ending with the name being used at the time of death. Some genealogy programs do not allow space for many names, so one has to decide how to record the names.

If a man moved as a måg (son-in-law) to his wife's family home, he used her farm name as his "surname" and his wife retained her farm name.
