View Full Version : Johannes Jakobsson Hannula in USA
Hi,
My wife's ancestor Johannes Jakobsson Hannula, born 10.6.1855 in Larsmo, moved to USA in 1891. The only thing we managed to find out about him was that he died 17.9.1895 somewhere in USA in timber work accident.
Unfortunately e.g. Ellis Island records start only from 1892, so I have not managed to get even hold of the travel details, where I could perhaps get some hints of the destination.
Does anyone know the fate of this individual or perhaps can give some guidance on online resources, where I could find more information?
Warmest regards,
Sami
Hi Sami,
Could this be Johannes?

Hi Jeanette,
Thank you! Definitely this is the man I am looking for! He left Finland 18.11.1891, so the arrival date matches fine!
I wonder what that word "EUREKA" means in the destination?
Regards, Sami
Eureka probably refers to Eureka, California. Many Finlanders emigrated there to work in the woods as loggers.

Here are some sites for Genealogy in Humboldt County, CA.
The Death Index for Humboldt County prior to 1905 has been transcribed alphabetically. http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905/Humboldt/humboldt-indx-f-j.htm
I wasn't able to find Johannes on it, perhaps he had moved on from Eureka. Here is the main California page which has a map

The next state and another forestry state is Oregon
I noticed there were a large number of Hannula people at the archives there.

I hope these are helpful.

Thank you June and Jeanette!
I'll try to dig into these links and see what I find out.
