Hi everyone
I am looking for a grandfather to my brother-in-law. His name was Hiskias Kuivanen, born 3.11.1876 in Parkano,Finland. He emigrated to USA at 1902 with his wife and son. The wife Aleksiina and son Lauri returned back to Finland later. He used the name Maki, too. He died at 1915 at States, the rumer says he was murdered somewhere.
If somebody has somenthing about him, I would be greatfull.

Welcome to the Forum,

His destination was said to be Rockland, ME in the Finnish passenger list. He departed Finland on 4 October 1902.

His wife and three children did not join him on this trip as it reads "Sj vaimo ja 3 lasta" in his passport issued Sep 23, 1902, that is his wife and three children stayed in Finland.

Did they make a first trip in 1901 as there is a passport record in 1901 for Aleksiina Kuivanen from Parkano b. 1871 and it reads that the holder of this passport was Hiskias b. 1876?

Regards,

Hi again Staffan

I have the passport information from the year 1901 in front of me and there it says that his wife and son Lauri travelled with him on the same passport. I havenīt found any information of the second trip - maybe they waited untill the 14.10.1902 before they travelled. Do you have any other information?
Regards
Soile

Soile,

There are actually *three* passport records:

Last....First names.........Passport date Date of birth Home parish Destination
Kuivanen Hiskias....................... .1901..... .1876....Parkano......Amerikka
Kuivanen Hiskias Josefsson...23.09.1902..... .1876....Parkano......USA
Kuivanen Hiskias Josefsson...23.09.1902..... .1876....Parkano......Amerikka

I did only check the two later ones (which are duplicates) as the date
23.09.1902 is more consistent with the passenger record of 4.10.1902. It is
possible as you say that they all traveled in October 1902 but I was not
able to find the wife and child in any passenger records. If you know his
father's name and it was not Josef the two later passport records which
give discrepant information can be discarded.
