Hi everyone, and June, this is for you:D
Grandma Ina Fraki's recipe for Hot Water Bread:
Mix together: 4 Cups Rye Flour
4 Cups Hot Water
let stand overnight in buttered, covered bowl
the next day add: 1 Cup Dk. Karo Syrup
4 Tablespoons Molasses
1/2 Cup melted Crisco or Oleo
1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
1- 1/2 Tablespoon salt
1 Tablespoon Anise
1 Tablespoon Fennel
1 Tablespoon Caraway Seed
Add: 2 envelopes yeast mixed in 1/4 cup warm water. Put 8 Cups White Flour on work area, and mix the above mixture in. Add 1 more cup white flour, and continue kneading forever! Let rise in warm, buttered bowl until double (about 3 hours) Punch down, let rise again until double. Then shape into 4 round loaves. Put into greased round pans, and bake at 350 degrees 1 hour. Butter top of loaves after baking.

Our family has made this bread ever since I can remember, but we called it Swedish Rye bread. It is so good I wish I had some right now - fresh out of the oven so I could slice it and eat it hot with butter on it. Yum.. :)
