A three member investigative team composed of Susanne Österlund-Pötzsch of Helsinki, Susan Larson of St. Paul, MN and Mike Roinila of NY has been gathering information on the involvement and identity of Finland-Swedes in the US and Canada. The goal of the project is to begin to understand the role women have played in maintaining the distinct Finland-Swedish identity and culture. Mike Roinila called me last fall, saying he had seen my name and my articles online, and asked if he could come here and interview me re this project. Since that time they have placed a questionnaire online for those who wish to participate. It is available at http://home.earthlink.net/~roinila/ or you can get a hard copy by calling 612-839-5776, or by writing to:
Finland-Swedish Identity Project
C/o 712 Wilder St.
St. Paul, MN 55116

The questionnaire will be online until August 2006. Here are several comments taken from respondents: "Women are like the hub of a wheel when it comes to maintaining contact of family members." "Women in their role as mothers at home influence their children and it is through the children that the culture will be carried on."

I only wanted to mention that information about this project has been on the SFHS Portal pages several months here (http://sfhs.eget.net/portal/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=71&Itemid=2) and the article has been loaded/read some 500 times since.
