Once again I'm trying to help someone find data about a relative from Finland - and they don't know when or where he was born, but possibly in Karleby. He had brothers Matts, John and sister Hanna. This is what is known:

Anders Lindqvist, d. ca 1904, Ashland, WI, married to Amanda Sofia Eriksdotter Snåre - Ericksson, b. 26 Sep 1868 in Kronoby, Finland, d. 23 Jan 1953 in America. Had 5 children:
Herman, b. Michgan, married to Hilda. Lived in Ashland, WI
Ester Amanda, married to Conrad Nelson.
Elizabeth, b. 1900, Wisconsin, married to Herman Reiten.
Selma, b. ca 1905, WI (sometimes called Grace).
Waldemar, b. Michigan.

I can find data on Amanda Sofia's ancestry, but am stuck on Anders' family data. Since it appears he died in Ashland in the early 1900s, is there any way to find his birthdate and place through death records for Ashland?

I have data on an Anders Viktor Carlsson Lindqvist, b. 10 Aug 1864 in Karleby, who came to America. But nothing more is known about him. It's possible he could be the ONE, but I'm at a dead end now.

Bill,

That could be the same person because the exact death date wasn't known. Is there any other information about him such as age or birthdate?

Thanks, Art. Interesting to note she was going to Ludington, MI. Many Finlanders went there, including my grandparents in 1882 and 1889. Now I wish we could find something about her husband Anders Lindqvist. I thought I had found him, b. 1864 in Karleby, but his family in the US said he's not the correct person.

Weren't you related to Hendrik Forss? He and I used to exchange mail and data until he died.

Interestingly I came across a Matt and John Lindquist that may be Anders' brothers. Instead of listing all the details I have attached an image of the 1910 US Federal Census. Notice that Matt and John's older children were born in Michigan and the younger ones in Wisconsin.

Art,

Thank you - very interesting and it's very possible John and Matt could be brothers of Anders . They all seem to have first lived in Mich. and then moved to Wisc. I've been trying to find someone who lives in Ludington who could check to see if this Lindquist family lived there in the late 1890s.

Do you have access to 1900 census records to see if Anders, John or Matt can be found in Mich.?

sure Elizabeth was born in Ludington, Mi. However, Andrew Lindquist doesn't show up in the 1900 census. We are quite
sure Andrew and Amanda were married in Ludington. I don't
anyone living in Ludington, but I will try to locate someone.

Art,

Wow, that's going to take some studying to figure it out. I noticed that census taker wrote his S and L the same way - so the last name could be Sunquist or Lunquist or Linquist. This is Albert's family, so he'll have to go over it with his relatives to see what they think. According to birth records in Finland, Amanda was born 26 Sep 1868 - and she emigrated 1893.

Thank you for your diligence.

Hello June,

I hope I'm not confusing matters even more by trying to identify some of the Lindquists in the 1900 US Federal census. The least it will do is prove the census taker had poor writing skills.

Art,

The mystery deepens. I'm trying to keep an open mind when I look at this. There's too much of a coincidence and it would seem that Surquist and Lundquist were the same - but how could the census taker misunderstand the last name so completely? John A. Surquist, b. Nov 1893 could be Arthur Lindquist, b. 12 Nov 1893. Tura Andria Surquist, b. Feb 1900 could be Terry Lindquist, b. 16 Feb 1900, etc.

It looks like Anders and Amanda married ca 1894 and had 3 children born in Michigan: Ester, 1895; Oscar, 1895; and Erick, 1898. I have Elizabeth, Selma and Waldemar as the other children. Selma was also called Grace and died in 1926 - she was born ca 1905 in Wisconsin, which would mean she was the youngest child because Anders died 1905. I think the census record indicated Amanda had 8 children, but 5 were living.

I wonder if Albert could find out anything by writing to Social Security for the 3 Surquist names that had Social Security numbers?

I'm thinking out loud here and rambling on -- hopefully it will make some sense. I found an e-mail address for the Mason County Historical Society (where Ludington, MI is located) and perhaps Albert can ask them to do some lookups to straighten this out. Albert is new to Finlander so I hope he's able to read the incoming mail.

Thanks again.

This is great info, for Anders and Amanda had a daughter, Esther who born May of 1895 and a son Oscar who died at
age 3. Erik was popular name in the Amanda Snare side of
the family. I tried calling Herman Lindquists daughter, Joann
to see if Herman's first name was Erick. I will keep trying.
Your right in Erick's birthday matchs Hermans. Both of you have done a wonderful job.

Hello June & Albert,

I thought I should post Elsie S. Lindquist obituary. She is the daughter of John and Louise (Hendrickson) Lindquist (most likely Andrew's brother).

Elsie Lindquist , , Elsie S. Lindquist, 93, Ashland, passed away Saturday, November 24, 2001, at Ashland Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born January 6, 1908, in Ashland, the daughter of John and Louise (Hendrickson) Lindquist.

Elsie was a lifelong resident of Ashland. She graduated from Ashland High School in 1926. She received her teaching degree from the Ashland County Normal School in 1928. She was a member of the Saron Lutheran Church of Ashland. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and baby-sitting for her family and friends.

She is survived by two nieces, Rev. Margie (Fred) Peterson of St. Paul, Minn.; and Margaret Poppe of Kenosha, and four nephews, John (Edie) Anderson of Ashland, Jerry (LaDonna) Lindquist of Verona, Bill (Judy) Lindquist of Reno, Nev. and Howard Lindquist.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Martha Anderson and Elna Magnuson; and six brothers, Arthur, Ed, Eno, Terry, Felix and Harold Lindquist.

When I spoke to Joann Frazier, Herman Lindquists daughter, last Sunday, I asked about Elsie. Joann who lives in Ashland, didn't seem to know much other then that she was related. I had meet Elsie about 20 years ago when she came to visit my grandma Lizzie. The obituary gives some more leads to follow up on. I think your are correct in that John was Anders brother. Thanks

Through Ancestry.com I checked the social security death indexs for Terry and Arthur Lindquist, but this revealed a limited amount of info. I checked on the naturalization records for Mason County, Mi. where Ludington is located and found that John and Matt Lindquist were naturalized their. Those documents are now at the state and access is by letter to see the detail. Do either of you know if there could be valuable info in these records.

Hi Albert,

I have my mother's Certificate of Naturalization which is one piece of paper encased in a black leather folder. It was issued in 1941.

It has her photograph, capped by a gold Circuit Court of Ingham County Michigan Seal. It also contains a personal description of her, including age, sex, complexion, color of eyes, color of hair, height and marital status. Her signature appears three times on the document. It also includes the date she was naturalized and her residence at the time.

I know that my mother went to Night School for classes for a couple of years in preparation for obtaining her citizenship papers. I have the three texts she used: "Constructive Lessons in English for the Foreign Born," "Essentials of Spelling," and "Grammar With Composition."

She used to listen to some of the soap operas on the radio to practice pronunciation, because she was so conscientious about saying everything right!

Hello June & Albert,

I found the following obituary of Delores (Lindquist) Pann in the Ashland Daily Press. She is the granddaughter of John and Louise Lindquist.

Deloris (Lindquist) Pann

Following the death of her husband, Robert Johnson, who died during action in France in World War II, Deloris enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps. She served at the Northington General Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Ala. She married T-4 Jules H. Pann in December, 1945.

Survivors include her husband, Jules H. Pann, Hardy; three sons, Larry, Wakefield, Mich., David (Ann), Hardy, and Jon, Ironwood, Mich.; and a daughter Juliene Foster, Gladstone, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jerome (LaDonna) Lindquist, Verona.

Memorials may be sent to the charity of choice, per Deloris’ request.

Mother came to our house
To keep us company
We watched our mother struggle
Through loss of memory
In the beginning she’d get so angry
Frustrated and confused
Then she’d say the darndest things
That kept us all amused
She would watch the children dancing
That was fine you see
As long as they were dancing
She was happy as can be
She was always such a joy
A pleasure to be around
We were truly blessed the day
Our mother came to town
The time passed oh so quickly
It wasn’t very long
When the angels came from heaven
To take our mother home
Now our mother is an angel
She’s smiling from above
As we say our last farewell
Remember her with love

I have some interesting news about this search. I wrote to a woman I know in Ludington, MI about our search. She said in 1899 her grandfather was a boarder at the Emil Bishop house. Then by 1920 the Bishop family lived on Ludington Avenue and lived across the street from this woman's grandparents! Her parents knew just about everyone in town in those early days and they had a lot of old photos. She is going to look through them. She remembers that Waldemar (Lindqvist) lived with the Bishops in 1920. He was known as Waldemar Bishop.

We have lots of information about everyone except Anders Lindqvist. I've asked someone in Finland to see if he could find an Anders Lindqvist, b. ca 1868, but so far he hasn't found him in either Karleby or Kronoby. It's possible the family didn't use that name in Finland.

June and Art,
I talked to Joyce Freeman, of Mitchell, SD, granddaughter of Hanna Lindquist Johnson, this past Sat. Joyce didn't have any new or different info on the Lindquists, but offered to check thru her things. She also said she would contact her sister Shirley, in Cal. to see if she had anything. Joyce thought there was a relative in Bayfield, Wi. who was doing research on the Lindquist side of the family several years ago. Joyce was going to try and locate that person for me.
I'm writing to another granddaughter of Hanna, Laverne Sibley of Cambridge, Mn. who would be Joyces cousin.

thanks

Albert

Hi all,

I notised that Albert has got much new data that may point in the right direction when I got home from our trip down to Central Europe.

I'm really impressed with the effort you all put into these investigations! Good work folks! Loads of new message threads and answers since the last time I had the chance to browse the net.

Art,

What a great find! Now we need to find some people in Finland who were named Johan Mattsson (Lindquist?) and Carrie (?) Lovisa.. I already have parents for Amanda and they are Erik Mattsson (not Eriksson) and Lisa Magdalena.

I wonder if the marriage license in Ludington would have Anders' birthdate and hopefully place of birth. Maybe Albert can find that out now that we know the date of marriage.

Glad to hear from you, Hasse. You've missed out on some exciting mail. And I believe that some of these Lindquists are related to you..

... the persons surely belong to the Ostrobothnian huge gene pool. Amanda I know does and I'm fairly convinced already that Andrew also does.

Wonder btw who else were on the same ship as Amanda emigrated on? Were there any Anders -persons from the area aboard the same ship? Or did Amanda know Anders from being of the same age and from Kronoby?

Hasse, I'm not sure who found Amanda's passenger record - was it Art? There were remarks: Vuosi 1893 (?) MK Johan Pulkkinen, Alf. Oivu ja Alex Notjärvi. Do those names mean something?

I just did a recap of what I think I know:

Johan Mattsson (Lindqvist) had 3 sons who came to the US, as well as two daughters:

Matt, b. ca 1865, to US 1888, married ca 1891 (Ludington?) to Wendla, b. ca 1865. A farmer. Was in Ashland in 1910. I don't have any data on children, except there were 10 and 2 died.

Johan, b. Aug 1869, to US 1889, married ca 1892 (Ludington?) to Lovisa Hendricksdotter, b. Jun 1870, to US 1890. They lived in Ludington in 1900 and some of their children were born there. Family moved to Ashland, WI.

Anders, b. ca May 1868, to US 1890, married 14 Nov 1894, Ludington, MI to Amanda Snåre-Erickson, b. 26 Sep 1868, to US 1893. I noticed that Amanda claims she was born Oct 1867, which is not correct. Some children born in Ludington and the rest in Ashland, WI. The family moved to Ashland, WI shortly after 1900, where Anders died in March 1905.

According to Albert, there were also two daughters of Johan Mattsson: Hanna and Tilda. Albert has had contact with some family members.

It looks like marriage and birth records in Ludington might have helpful information about the 3 sons as well as the names of their wives.

I forgot to add that these Lindquists arrived in the US before 1892, so they didn't come through Ellis Island - maybe Castle Garden? or Boston? Does anyone know?

June, Art, and Hasse
Art that is a great find, the names of Anders parents. I will call the Mason County courthouse tomorrow to see what records are available.
Thru the Wisconsin Historical Society I found that there is an obituary avalible for Hannah Lindquist Johnson. When I sent for the obituary they said it would take 3-4 weeks to get. Maybe that will have some useful info. She lived from 1867-1942.
I did check the for Lindquists at Castle Garden and at Ancestry.com through Boston and New York. Found some Lindquists, but none that we are looking for.
June the notes I had are that Anders two sisters were Hannah and Hilda, but the info Art found is that Hilda is really Anna Bishop.

thanks to all

There were remarks: Vuosi 1893 (?) MK Johan Pulkkinen, Alf. Oivu ja Alex Notjärvi. Do those names mean something?

This should mean that they emigrated 1893. "MK" stands for "travelling companions", ie. Johan Pulkkinen, Alfred Åivo and and Alexander Notjärvi went with the same ship.

Some speculations:

There is an Alfred Mattsson Lillåivo, b. 2 March 1866, Såka whose mother was born in Kivjärv, ie. in the same village as Amanda... This Alfred had brothers with the names Johan and Matts - who both also seem to have vanished into thin air. Also Hanna and Tilda would fit in as sisters...

Alfred's father died when Alfred was very young.

Alexander Notjervi could be Alexander Sanfred Notjärvi, b. 18 OCT 1875, Såka - also with connections to the same families.

But...

Could Alfred have taken "Andrew" instead of "Alfred" when entering USA?
The birth years of Johan and Matts don't fit with the other info
One branch of the siblings will be known as "Lindell", hence the "Lind" -part of the surname wouldn't be that impossible to imagine
Amanda and Alfred travelled on the same boat and they knew/learned they were distantly related...
Alfred's birth date doesn't fit as well

Many questionmarks to be straightened out

I went through HisKi looking for a Johan Mattsson who had 3 sons and a daughter who went to America: Matt in 1888, Johan in 1889 and Anders in 1890. I didn't find any family, with or without the name Lindquist. Could it be that HisKi doesn't have this parish online - or are these dates and names wrong?

I also checked Talko for a suitable family - but didn't find one.

We have to hope that Albert can find some helpful information on Anders Lindquist's marriage application in Ludington. And perhaps an announcement of the wedding was in the Ludington newspaper (google said it was the Ludington Daily News and they might have an archive that can be searched). Perhaps his brothers also were witnesses at the wedding. I think both of his brothers probably were married in Ludington: Johan married ca 1892 to Lovisa, and Matt married ca 1891 to Wendla. All the Lindquists probably attended the Swedish Lutheran Church there - Emmanuel Lutheran Church...501 E Danaher St. (found that on google - the church has been there for 150 years). Albert said their sister Hanna was married to someone named Johnson. Is it possible she also lived and married in Ludington about the same time? So the Courthouse in Ludington may hold some answers.

June, Art, Hasse,
I call the Mason County Courthouse (Ludington, Mi.) the only records they had was for Andrew Lindquist. Nothing for John and Matt. The info was the same as what Art found. I asked for info on Emil Bishop, this is what they had;

Husband: Emil Bishop
Birth: Finland (no city)

Wife: Anna Louise Johnson
Birth: Finland (no city)
Anna's father: John Matson

Date: Dec 24, 1897

Also, in the naturalization records, there is an Anna Mary Louise Johnson listed, which I will get those detailed records.

I have data on Emil Bishop. He was:

Johan Emil Mattsson Biskop, b. 27 Dec 1869, Karleby, d. ca 1931/32 Ludington MI. Married to Anna Lovisa Lindqvist from Kållby, Pedersöre (per Haals Åttlingar, Tab. 948.)

I tried to find an Anna Lovisa from Kållby in HisKi - the only one I found who had a father named Johan Mattsson was Anna Lovisa, b. 12 Feb 1879 at Niss in Ytterpurmo. Parents: Johan Mattsson and Kaisa Lena Johansdotter. There was an Anna Lovisa, b. 1872, but the father's name was not Johan Mattsson. There were no Lindquist names so don't know where Anna Lovisa got that name.

I checked Pedersöre HisKi for a Johan Mattsson who could have had the Lindquist children (not using any surname). I found several Matts, Johan and Anders born on the estimated dates - but they had different parents.

It's strange that Andrew Lindquist was the only one that could be found in Ludington. We have seen 1900 census records indicating that Andrew and John Lindquist's children were born there in Ward 4 - however the name was misspelled as Surquist - not Lindquist.

Since the Lindquists emigrated before 1892, I knew I wouldn't find any record in Ellis Island, and when I checked Castle Garden none of them showed up. But then I used a wild card and found this:

Johan Lindgvist, age 26, arrived 23 Oct 1889 from Finland, ship Nevada. Note the use of g instead of q - they had misspelled the name.

According to census records, Johan Lindqvist emigrated 1889 and he was born in 1869 - so he would have been 26. Could this be the same person - and how can we find out more from Castle Garden?

Art, great detective work and lots of information. I don't know anything about Hanna, but the birthdate fits in with the Lindquist brothers. Based on what census records show, she must have been older than her brothers. I'm going to send the data on the Johnson children to someone I know in Ludington to see if the names mean anything to her. It's a pity we didn't start this search a couple years ago when her father was living - he knew the names of most of the old-timers in Ludington.

Albert, the picture of Anders is typical of that time period. I've seen many similar photos. It isn't a wedding photo, but perhaps it was taken for some reason before he married. Perhaps he worked in Manistee.

I don't think it's possible to find a Matt Johnson/Johansson in HisKi because there would be hundreds with that name - and we have no idea where he was born in Finland.

Is it possible to find a marriage record for Matt Johnson and Johanna in Ludington ca 1888/89? There was only one Swedish language church there - Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Art,

The Johnson names agree with the pictures of the Johnson gravestones. So it's possible Johanna was Albert's relative. I don't know if his Johnsons stayed on in Ludington or if they moved to Wisconsin as did the Lindquists. That's quite a list of Lindquist deaths but until we find out more about the 3 brothers, we have no way of knowing if they are connected.

I have a note that Emil Bishop died ca 1932 in Ludington. Strange that he isn't buried near his wife.

Thanks for noting my grandmother and aunt. I went there in 1990 for my aunt's funeral but haven't been back. She had lived there for most of her life and she may have known the Bishops, but the Lindquist family moved while she was too young to remember. But my grandmother may have known some of the people - she died in 1933. I don't know anyone living there now, except one person and I have asked if she can find anything. She said she would try, but has to work during the week, and the courthouse is closed on weekends. She said her father knew the Bishops, but he died recently. We keep running into dead ends. My aunt had cousins living there until the late 1980s, so we're too late to contact any old timers. Hopefully, Albert will soon get some answers to his queries.

Here is another marriage record for Andrew Lindquist that I found at FamilySearch.org. The marriage date appears to be inconsistent with Amanda's arrival to America so its probably wrong.

Maybe the initial "V" will give us another clue.

Art,

I thought this could be Anders Viktor Lindquist who was born 19 Aug 1864 in Karleby and came to the US in 1882 and died in 1899. Nothing more is known about him as to where he lived. He came here with his brother Carl Johan, b. 1861 and died 1887 in the US. They had a sister Brita Johanna Carlsdotter Lindquist, b. 1857 in Karleby, who emigrated and married in 1880 to a Viktor Nyberg, 1855-1914. And also a sister Maria Sofia, b. 1856, d. 1887 US. Don't know where they lived. I just noticed that Maria and her brother Carl Johan died in the US on the same day in 1887. That's unusual, unless they were in an accident. Recently a genealogist in Finland wrote me about them, but I had no idea where any of them had lived. They were the children of Carl Henriksson Lindquist and Sofia Johansdotter Kykyr.

The parents you listed were Charles/Carl Lindquist and Mary/Maria Erikson. So maybe this Anders V. Lindquist is not linked to the above people. And he doesn't appear to be linked to Albert's Lindquist people, either. I think our hope now is to find information about Emil Bishop's wife Anna Lovisa Lindkvist who was noted as being born 1872 in Kållby to the mjölnare. Someone in Finland has offered to check the Pedersöre church records to see if he can find Anna Lovisa and, hopefully, data about her parents to see if they could be Albert's ancestors.

I checked my database about Anna Lovisa (Torp) b. 1872 from Kållby, but she does not seem to be the woman you are looking for. She also emigrated to USA and she was married twice, but not with Biskop.

Thanks, Albert. I noticed that there's a change in Andrew's birthdate of 2 years - 1866 vs 1868. No change in John's birth year. It's a pity more definite info. wasn't given about birthplace and parents' names. Previously they indicated parents as John Mattson and now it's John Johnson, so we aren't any closer to finding them.

Hello June & Albert,

I think I finally found a possible match to the Lindquist family that we've been looking for. Although some of the dates are not exact I think one must keep an open mind to any errors that normally might occur.

After searching Jaska Sarell's, Börje Vestö's and Kaj Granlund's databases at Talko I found the following children of Johan Mattsson WÄRNÅ b. 21 MAR 1841 i Esse married 29 NOV 1861 i Esse to Greta Sofia Hansdr HOLLÄNDER b. 28 NOV 1837 i Pedersöre to be an almost perfect match.

1. Johanna Johansdr WÄRNÅ, b. 6 OCT 1862, Esse
2. Matts Johansson WÄRNÅ, b. 20 JAN 1864, Esse
3. Anders Johansson WÄRNÅ, b. 18 FEB 1866, Esse
4. Johan Johansson WÄRNÅ, b. 18 AUG 1869, Esse
5. Anna Lovisa Johansdr WÄRNÅ, b. 29 JUL 1872, Esse

Here are the details.

Johanna Johansdr WÄRNÅ
Birth: 6 OCT 1862 Esse
Sex: Female
Father: Johan Mattsson WÄRNÅ, b. 21 MAR 1841, Esse
Mother: Greta Sofia Hansdr HOLLÄNDER, b. 28 NOV 1837, Pedersöre
Family: 1 Viktor ANDERSSON t TARVOS
Married: 4 AUG 1889

Mother: Greta Sofia Hansdr HOLLÄNDER, b. 28 NOV 1837, Pedersöre

Anders Johansson WÄRNÅ
Birth: 18 FEB 1866 Esse
Sex: Male
Father: Johan Mattsson WÄRNÅ, b. 21 MAR 1841, Esse
Mother: Greta Sofia Hansdr HOLLÄNDER, b. 28 NOV 1837, Pedersöre
Notes: Konfirmerad.

Johan Johansson WÄRNÅ
Birth: 18 AUG 1869 Esse
Sex: Male
Father: Johan Mattsson WÄRNÅ, b. 21 MAR 1841, Esse
Mother: Greta Sofia Hansdr HOLLÄNDER, b. 28 NOV 1837, Pedersöre
Notes: Konfirmerad. Emigrerat, ogift.

Anna Lovisa Johansdr WÄRNÅ
Birth: 29 JUL 1872 Esse

Art,

I think you're onto something now. That's an almost perfect match. And we know that many emigrants weren't sure the exact date of their birth and it could vary. Jaska has been away and I hope he can soon check his e-mail and tell us more. He has worked on Esse records for Finngen and perhaps he'll know if and when all these people emigrated. Guess we'll never know why they chose the Lindquist name because it can't be deduced from Wärnå or Holländer.

Great detective work. I have some Esse marriage records, but no birth records. If Jaska doesn't reply, perhaps Kaj can tell us more. I'll be anxious to find out more.. I tried to check HisKi but the records don't include the years we need.

Art,

You had posted info on Amanda Snåne, her passport info that you got from the Institute of Migration on April 29. I was wondering if you had checked on the Lindquist's and the Wärnå name.
Last week I searched the Institute, but could only find one Anders W. with a birthday of 1870 and a passport date of 1899, home parish of Ahtava, and one Johanna Warna, dated 21.03.1896.

June, Art, Hasse,

I was going thru a Matt Lindquists obituary, see the attached, who lived his whole life in Ludington. Several things of interest, his bithdate matchs exactly to the day that of Matts Johansson Warna, his is survived by a sister, Hannah Johnson of Ashland,
and he was preceded in death by his wife Edda Louise Lindquist. Tomorrow I will contact the Mason Co. register of deeds again looking for marriage records and a death record.

Well, it seems like Matt Lindquist is the same Matts Wärnå.

But how can one connect this Matt Lindquist to Albert's Andrew? Are the people mentioned in the obit recognized as relatives to you Albert? The Hannah mentioned should have been Lizzie's aunt, if I'm not wrong. Also Matt's children should have been cousins to Lizzie.

The John Lindquist also fits in quite nicely

Name: John Lindquist
Age: 50 years
Estimated birth year: abt 1870
Birthplace: Finland
Race: White
Home in 1920: Ashland Ward 1, Ashland, Wisconsin

Also - (census 1920) Hannah seemed to have been married to Victor Johnson, having two children Walter and Elsie/Elve/Elvie in ancestry.com). Albert one mentioned "I remember an Elsie Lindqvist that was my grandma Lizzie's cousin, who lived in Ashland and was about my grandmas age"

I think you're on to something here...

I have a book about Mason County, Michigan, published in 1980, which mentions:

"Among the Swede-Finns who became fishermen at the turn of the century were Andrew Newberg, Andrew Borg, John Gustafson, Charles J. Johnson, EMIL BISHOP and MATT LINDQUIST, followed by his sons, Fred, Alec and Hugo..." This excerpt referred to Ludington, Michigan.

I didn't find anything more about Bishop or Lindquist. Matts Lindquist's obit mentioned a daughter Elisabeth Hogenson - this book has a mention of some Hogenson names, but hers is not mentioned. Matts' daughter Etta was married to Whittaker, but her name doesn't appear in the paragraph about the Whittaker family. The obit also mentioned daughter Signa DesEnfants of Ludington. I didn't find DesEnfants mentioned in the book.

Some time ago Art Fors found a 1910 census for Ashland, WI for a Matt Lindquist, b. ca 1865 in Finland, who was married to Wendla and they had 10 children, 6 of them born in Ludington and two born in Ashland. But none of the children's names match the Matt Lindquist that Albert found. I've been told that there were several Lindquist families in Ludington. And for some reason, some Lindquist families moved from Ludington to Ashland.

Hope Albert can now turn up something more about Matt Lindquist's marriage, etc. It seems that he probably was married there ca 1899. His wife's name could have been Elda Lovisa or maybe Edla Lovisa, b. ca 1866.

Hasse brings up a point about Matt's daughter Hanna/Johanna. According to the Wärnå data, she was born 6 Oct 1862 and married 4 Aug 1889 to Viktor Andersson-Tarvos who emigrated in 1900. That would indicate the couple married in Finland before emigrating to the US. I have a copy of the Esse marriages, but their marriage doesn't appear between 1886 and 1900 - the could have married elsewhere.

I found this reference to a fishing tug owned by Alex Lindquist:
http://www.airstreamcomm.net/~fishtug/rosters.htm

I also found a fishing boat for Fred Lindquist at Munising, Mich. in the late 1930's.

In the book I have about Mason County, there is this reference:

As late as the 1930s about a dozen fishing tugs were operating out of the Ludington harbor. But 1953 the number had dwindled to three. The three boats were owned by local fishermen. Ernest and Oscar Holmstrom who operated the Sea Wolf, a 44-foot gasoline powered boat formerly owned by their brother Axel; the Joe-Ann owned and operated by Lindquist brothers Alex and Fred, was a 44-foot diesel powered boat... The boats were tied up and the nets spread to dry adjacent to the Peterson Fish Market. There is a picture of a fishing tug owned by Degergus in 1909 and a picture taken in 1913 of fishermen in Ludington, but Emil Bishop is the only familiar name listed.

I tried to find an Edla Lovisa born in Finland ca 1864-68 and found two born in Kronoby:
Edla Lovisa Jakobsdotter Tranubäck, b. 29 Sep 1864

Edla Lovisa Mattsdotter Åminne, b. 8 Oct 1864.

On the Edla Lovisa Tranubäck I believe Juha could have some input. I feel she went under the name Cederberg at some point.

Albert and Art,

It appears that we now know something about each of Matt Lindquist's children, except Etta who married Whittaker. I haven't been able to find any reference to that family.

If I read Albert's 1910 census correctly about Johanna and Viktor Johnson, their son William was born 1890 in Finland - probably about the time Viktor left for America. I noticed that Johanna and William came to the US in 1890.

Art,

Thanks for all the new information. Were Etta and Ethel the same person? And she was married to Edward Whitaker? I'm not sure what connection the Kuras people have to Ethel Whitaker. It looks like her Uncle Hugo lived at her house in Grand Rapids in 1920. Can't figure how Engriad Osterlund fits in. Guess I'm too confused.

Hello June & Albert,

I believe Etta and Ethel are the same person. In the Michigan Death Records Etta E. Whitaker is probably Etta Ethel Whitaker.

In the 1920 US Federal Census Etta (Ethel) was married to Edward Whitaker and her daughter, Engriad Osterlund was listed as Edward's step daughter which meant Etta was married previously to an Osterlund. At this time they live in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

In the 1930 US Federal Census Etta (Ethel) was listed as a widow, therefore Edward died sometime between 1920 and 1930.

Also in the 1930 US Federal Census Ethel Whitaker was living with her daughter, Engriad and son in law, Wallace Kuras.

Here are some more records to consider.

Here one should note that the 1910 census probably has an error, since Victor was younger than Johanna. Victor was born 1866 (not 1856!). This can be seen in the 1920 census ("approx. 1867") and from the Hiski marriage record where Victor was 23 and Johanna 26 of age in 1889.

Art,

Thanks for clearing that up. In the book about Mason County, I found this reference:

In the 1930s one of the fishing tugs operating out of Ludington harbor was the John B. Cloutier, a 53-foot diesel powered boat belonging to Alec, Leo and Louis Cloutier. Perhaps Engriad remarried one of the Cloutier family.

This record for Mason county cemetery shows Etta's death and burial, but the J. Edward Whitaker could be Etta's husband born 1886 - did this entry mean he died in 1921 and was born 1885? There was a Victory township in Mason County, and the cemetery could be South Victory, indicating that he probably lived there at time of death:

Hello June,

The entry in the Mason County Cemetery Index for J. Edward Whitaker indicates he was born in 1885 and died in 1921.

Thanks, Art. I was noticing that Etta was a child bride - she had Engriad in 1910 when she was about 18 and then married Whitaker about the same year - 1910.

It looks like the search for the Lindquist family to Ludington was a success, thanks to the diligence of Art Fors and the data that Kaj Granlund sent to Albert. I'm now helping Albert put the data together in a form he can use. Our thanks to all who helped.

Hello,
I have noticed you post on the forum concerning the descendants of Matt Lindquist and the names Ethel, Hugo, Engriad Osterlund, Whitaker, &
Kuras.
Ethel Lindquist married my great uncle Adrian Osterlund who was born in Sweden in 1887 & came to the USA in 1906. They had a daughter, Engriad Amelia, who was born in 1910, in Ludington, and died in 2001, in Ludington. Adrian Osterlund died in France in 1918, while with the AEF.
I have much info concerning this family and would like to contact like interested persons. Can you pass my message on?

Best regards,
Gordon Agren

I will pass Gordon's email address to both Albert and June

This is the info from Gordon Agren

Hello Albert,
I am not directly related to the Matt Linquist family. My grandmother's
brother Johan Adrian Osterlund married Matt Lindquist's daughter Edith/Etta
b. 4 June, 1892.
Cousins in Sweden have asked me to see if I could find if Adrian Osterlund
actually had a wife and daughter, as they did not know for sure and all that
they new was that he went to America in 1906 and died in WW1. It has taken 5
years to find him as he changed his name in 1910, to Andrew John Ostlund.
From his military records and the census, I have found the following:
Johan Adrian Osterlund was b. 9 July 1887, in Overklinten, Bydea parish,
Vasterbotten provence, Sweden. He married Ethel Lindquist in 1909, and on
April 13, 1910 deserted his wife. She was 17 years old and pregnent. Adrian
was found on the 1910 Marshall county, Minnesota census dated 13 May, 1910
as John Ostlund, single, working as a farm laborer.
On June 29, 1910, Ethel gave birth to a daughter, Engriad Amelia Osterlund
in Ludington. Adrian/John registered for the draft in 1917, again declaring
that he was single.
Ethel remarried in 1917 (probably as she had not heard from her husband for
7 years) to Edward J. Whitaker. He died in 1921.
Adrian/John went overseas with the AEF and was killed on Nov. 2 1918, and is
burried in France. I have been in contact with the Whitaker family in
Ludington, but they know very little. Adrin had relatives in Tustin, MI, not
far from Ludington. I hope to find a marriage record for Ethel & Adrian, as
I have no proof that they were actually married. I have never found
Ethel/Etta/Elda or Matt Lundquist on the 1900 or 1910 MI census. Have you
found them in those years?
I know of the Lindquist family of Iron Mountain as they had a son Hugo, and
Ethel also had a brother Hugo, but this proved to be the wrong family.
I also found a John Lindquist b. 1863 in Finland with a wife Emma and dau.
Etta, in Menominee County. Do you know of this family?
I am sure that there is more to be found concerning this couple, and I hope
that this info is a help to you.

Attached is the obituary for Engriad Cloutier

Just received a reply from the Institute of Migration:

Thank you for your e-mail to Jouni.

I am almost sure that the Wärnä family you found is correct. Almost all birth dates are the same and it was usual that birth date and month may change after migration.

Last names are big problem among Finnish emigrants. In Finland (western part) it was usual that the farm name was taken as last name. It means that if you move out from the farm the last name may stay or you can change it to some other. Those who move to the same farm take the same last name. So, there are a lot of people with the same last name but they are not related to each other. Wärnå is a farm name in Esse (Ähtävä in Finnish).

Unfortunately, our passport records of 1880's and 1890's are not yet in our register. So, I have not found the passports for Wärnå family. But I found one Anders J. Wärnå who traveled from Gothenburg Sweden on 15 April 1890. He was 24 years old and going to Ludington, Michigan. It was usual to travel through Sweden at that time. I also found the same Anders landing in New York on 1 May 1890 (www.ancestry.com ) It stays that his place of origin is Sweden but it is not correct. He came from Finland.

It also found one Mathias (same as Matt/Matti/Matts) Warna, 23 years old, landing in New York on 16 April 1886 (from Gothenburg on 9 April). It may be possible to find also the others, but it takes time and we should know the year of migration more precisely.

I suggest you to contact the church registry office of Ähtävä/Esse. Church records are in Finland the only reliable source for genealogical information. Adressen

It's good to know that the Wärnå siblings traveled to the US via Sweden and then took the Lindquist name in the US. But we still don't know why Anders said his mother's name was Carrie Louisa when it was actually Greta Sofia. If the marriage records for his brothers Matt and John also show Carrie Louisa as their mother's name, then we have a problem. I can't imagine that all of the children would be mistaken about their mother's name.

Hello June,

I don't think genealogical records from FamilySearch.org should be considered being all that accurate especially in regards to Ander's mother being listed as Carrie Louisa.

Here is a marriage record for Matts Lindquist that shows how unreliable they can be.

They surely got things a bit mixed up, didn't they? I'm assuming that Adle Lucy Matson is actually Edla Lovisa who married Matt Lindquist. His parents were Johan Mattsson and Greta Sofia Hansdotter.

Albert sent me a copy of Anders Lindquist's marriage record from the County Clerk's office in Ludington, and on it he stated his mother's name was Carrie Louisa - which could be Karen Lovisa. Their sister Anna Lovisa Lindquist married Emil Bishop, but she didn't put her mother's name on the record. We haven't seen the marriage record for their brother John Lindquist to see who he listed as his mother.

Art,

This is the marriage certificate I got from the Mason County Clerks office and I thought it was not the Matt we are looking for.
His age is off by one year, and other details are questionable, but then again I not sure. Matts father is again John Matson, but his mother is Sophie Erikson? See the attached.

Maybe there is a simple explanation to this.

The biological mother was Greta Sofia, but it seems that Johan Mattson remarried 1875. Anna Lovisa was three years old when he remarried, ie. it is quite possible that she didn't enter her mother's name into the records.

Johan Mattson married Brita Caisa Hans.dr. Wärnström. Therefore it could be that Anders considered his stepmother as his mother (the mother dies when Anders was a child!) and entered her name into the records. "Carrie Lovisa" - Carrie could be understood as "Caisa". God knows where Louisa comesfrom, but this was a common name in Brita Caisa's familiy. Maybe Brita Caisa had the third name "Lovisa"??

Lots of ifs - but "Carrie Louisa" might be explainable.

It was interesting to note the marriage certificate for Matt Lindquist - witness was Viktor Bjork of Ludington. My grandparents knew a Viktor Bjork in Ludington in 1891 - perhaps he is the same person.

Hello All,
Concerning Matt Linquist's marriage record and it's date of Mar 24, 1892.
Matt's first child, Etta, was born on June 4, 1892, according to her Social Security Death Index Record. So this may not be Etta's parents.

I wouldn't count on SSDI records to be always completely accurate. In searching my husband's family, dates given for great-uncles did not match church records for birth. Day and month are correct, but years were off by one, sometimes three. Often people filling out their forms for SS weren't even sure of their actual year of birth.

bigred
14-07-06, 18:32
Yes, not all records are accurate. Matt Lindquist's marriage record has been transcribed from the original had written record, so a mistake there is possible. It would help if a birth record for Etta could be found. Also finding Matt Lindquist family on the 1900 & 1910 census would help.

Everyone,

I just received what I believe is the marriage record for John Lindquist in todays mail. It was hard to find since it was under John Johnson. We were able to cross reference it thru John's wife Louise Hendrickson.

If only we knew the last name of Matts wife Edda Louise.

Note the parents names match those of the previous marriage record for Matt Lindquist and Adle Lucy Matson.

I recieved some additional info from Elizabeth from the Institute of Migration:

Thank you for your e-mail.

I know there are many mistakes and wrong names and dates in the records in USA. But of course it seams very confusing if the name of the mother is Carrie Louisa and Sophie Erikson for two brothers. I wonder why it is Sophie Ericson, in your list the name was Greta (=Carrie??) Sophia Hans' daughter not Erick's daughter. Sofia Erik's daughter was wife for Andrew, is it possible that the names were mixed.

As I wrote you before it is difficult to find the all members of the family, because we do not know exactly the name at that time they emigrated (I understand Johanna was married in Finland, what was her name in USA?). I have checked some microfilmed passport lists and found the passport records for:

Johan Johansson Wärnå, born 1869, passport to Sweden on 4 October 1889,
Matts Johansson Wärnå, born 1864, passport to America on 19 November 1889,
Anders Johansson Wärnå, born 1866, passport to America on 3 April 1890

I have not found Anna or Johanna, but many years are missing in those Jakobstad lists where emigrants from Esse got the passport. So, many things fits but to be sure we should be able to confirm that some person is both Wärnå and Lindquist. I have not been able to find the Lindquists in census records (www.ancestry.com ) or other lists in America.

If there is anything I do to help you, please contact me again,

Sincerely,
Elisabeth Uschanov

Elisabeth Uschanov wrote to Albert that she had not been able to find the Lindquists in census records on Ancestry.com. I remember seeing some census records here on Finlander for the family - was it Art Fors who found them in Ludington in 1900 under the name Surquist? Also in 1920 Linquist was found in Ashland, WI and in 1930 Lindquist was found in Ashland. I don't know if these records were in Ancestry.com - or some other website.

On Thursday April 19, I drove to Ludington, Michigan. The next day, I went to the Emanuel Lutheran Church (formally known as the Swedish Lutheran Church) to look at the church records from the late 1800's and early 1900's to see what info existed on the Lindquists. I found info on John Lindquist and his sister Anna Bishop. In Anna's record it states she born is Esse which is the info we were looking for to verify what everyone thought where the Lindquists came from. June Pelo had believed this info could be at this church, she was correct. Attached are some of the photos of the info I saw at the church.

I was just testing how we could point out the different places using the new Google map functionality.

Here is Wärnå (http://finlander.eget.net/vbgooglemapme.php?lat=63.593936106192004&lng=23.08879852294922&zoom=14) and here is Snåre (http://finlander.eget.net/vbgooglemapme.php?lat=63.642906085962146&lng=23.302001953125&zoom=12) where Albert's ancestors came from

sune

It seems that the names on the map are a blending of old original Swedish farm names, villages and later Finnish "translations". Kolppi, for instance is a village with the original name Kållby, Kirkkoranta is a place near the Pedersöre church originally called Kyrkostrand, Otsolahti is a part of Jakobstad called Björnviken, Majaniemi is nowadays a part of Jakobstad originally called Bonäs. The village Bennäs, which is the administrative center of Pedersöre is not marked at all. These are just a few examples from Pedersöre.

They are stealing our names.

Yes, Sune - I noticed the same.

The Åland Islands are Ahvenanmaa - wonder what the people there would think? All the old place names in my home parish suddenly seem to have 100% Finnish names. Here and there they have also added the Swedish name - ie. if there is space enough. But it seems like somebody has provided a register to the Google people which tries to erase all ancient names from the map. It is strange that people want to erase history. Makes one ask if Finland is a civilised country...

In the south-west of Finland in the skerries I have noticed that islands have been renamed during the years I have been an active leasure "boater". This really hurts when one notices that white collar administrators without reasons change the names. Is there a political decision to do this? Or is this only a slowly happening fennification of everything?

Sad - but the people responsible should at least have to explain why.

Btw - I have requested information from Google about who they have received the name/coordinate register from in the case of the Finnish names. Hopefully they will respond.
