I now have another request for help and I'll copy the information I received:

Oskar Wilhelm Simmonson was born in Lovisa, Finnland on July 15, 1885.

We are 90% sure that is his birth name, we were told that he changed his last name to Melander, when he was first married. He stayed with a family named Melander when he first arrived in U.S., and took their last name. I don’t know why.

We think his father’s name was Simon Simonson. Nothing else is known. We think his mother’s name was Fredika Mickelson. Nothing else is known.

It is possible he immigrated to U.S. on Jan. 7, 1903. He first married a woman whom we think her first name was Sylvia. However a listing from the Osterbotten #3 lists a Mrs. Oskar Melander, (Sigrid Stubb). I’m not sure if they are one and the same.

They had two children, daughter Bertha, and a son Ted. His first wife either died in childbirth or shortly after Ted was born. He adopted out Ted as an infant to another Finnish/Swedish family named Anderson. Bertha died around her tenth birthday.

Oscar then married Selma Emilia Jakobsson from Esse, Pedersore, Finland. We believe that were sisters or cousins, at least that is what has been handed down. Selma was born Dec. 11, 1895.
Immigrated to U.S. in 1920

Both Selma and Oscar Melander were naturalized in 1945.

Oscar died in 1949 in Ishpeming, Michigan.
Selma died in 1977 in Chicago, Ill.

Any information would be appreciated.

Art,

Thank you for all that information. Looks like the family lived around Negaunee and his first wife probably was Signe instead of Segned. The census taker must have thought the name sounded like Milander, although the descendants spell it Melander. Now I have to see if I can find some record of their ancestors in Esse. I think Jaska is still away for the summer; otherwise he has a lot of Esse data.

I haven't had any luck searching for data about Oskar Wilhelm Simonsson, b. 15 July 1885, Lovisa. HisKi records don't include 1885, and I haven't found any data on Talko. It is believed he was the son of Simon Simonsson and Fredrika Mickelsdotter - but I couldn't find any match for them in HisKi or Talko. Does anyone have access to Lovisa records or any suggestions?

I also had no luck finding Selma Emilia Jakobsson, b. 11 Dec 1895 in Esse. HisKi data doesn't include 1895 and I didn't find a match in Talko. Does anyone have later years for Esse that would include 1895?

Thanks.

Hi, June....I was at Bethel L.C. in Ishpeming this morning, and checked for these names there, as long as I had other look-ups to do there. Nothing in their books for these names.

But next week, when I come into town from camp, I will take a look at Immanuel's records, since I have other research to do there, too.

As one e-mail lister says, "keep on keeping on!"

June,
Have you tried Pastor Kaj Granlund? He is the pastor for Esse Church and has been most helpful to me with my research.

Thank you, Art. It's good to know that Sigrid's name was Stubb and she came from Esse. I still can't find Oskar in Lovisa, but I'm working on it.

Art,

Would you be able to find anything about Oskar's second wife Selma Emilia Jakobson, b. 11 Dec 1895, Esse. She probably came to the US between 1915-20. I haven't been able to find her in Esse, even though the family thinks she came from there. She and Oskar probably married ca 1921 because their first child was born 1922.

Hello June,

From the Institute of Migration passport records of all the Stubbs listed from Esse (Ähtävä) parish I was hoping to find a connection to Oskar's first wife, Sigrid Stubb and Selma. (see below)

Last name First names Passport date Date of birth Home parish Destination
Stubb Anna Lovisa 20.08.1903 . .1878 Ähtävä Amerikka
Stubb Antti Emil 20.08.1903 . .1875 Ähtävä Amerikka
Stubb Frans Wilhelm 21.11.1898 . .1879 Ähtävä Amerikka
Stubb Maria Alina 22.11.1898 . .1879 Ähtävä Amerikka
Stubb Matts Leander 05.10.1899 . .1880 Ähtävä Amerikka
Stubb Selma Johanna 20.08.1903 . .1886 Ähtävä Amerikka
Maybe Frans Wilhelm Stubb was the brother (F. Stubb) of Sigrid as noted in the Ellis Island passenger record?

I'll keep trying to find info on Selma Emilia Jakobsson.

Art,

Thanks for that interesting info. about Esse. Yes, it's possible Frans Wilhelm could be Sigrid's brother. I checked Esse birth records and there was a Frans Wilhelm b. 3 Apr 1879 on Sack farm in Löfö to Jonas Jakobsson Stubb and Lisa Sofia Johansdotter. I checked to see if they also had a daughter Sigrid, but didn't find her. It think she would have been born ca 1882.

I noticed that some births indicate Esse-Pedersöre, so it's possible the births could be in Pedersöre if not found in Esse. I'll have to try both.

Hi, June....I haven't finished searching, but I did find some medical records for 5 of the Melander family in Morgan Heights, a TB sanatorium near Marquette. Perhaps these documents could be mailed directly to the person who needs the information? If they send their address, I will mail the documents.

There were also some entries in the Polk Directories for 1916, 1920, 1925, 1939, and 1941, which may fatten up the family history a bit. More later, maybe. Midge.

I tried to find Oskar Wilhelm Simmonson and Simon Simonson and fredrika Mickelson on the Finnish database of parish information http://www.genealogia.fi/hiski. But it seems they are too young because the latest infomation of Lovisa is 1860. If you want to try yourself Lovisa/Loviisa (Swedish and Finnish spelling) is in area 3 on the map of Finland. They all had typically Swedish names. I looked for christening for them all, but I coud not find it. I also looked in nearby parishes Pernå and Strömfors, but they were not there. If you cant more information you could contact the parish of Lovisa. You probably find it on www.loviisa.fi and contact them. They will probably charge you a small sum of money for the information depending on how long it will take for them to find it.
Good luck

Anita,

Thank you for your search. I also tried to find these people but had no luck. So I guess we'll have to write to the parish office to find more information.
