Someone has asked for help finding information about his mother's father Karl Olofsson Ronkainen, b. 1873 in Finland, d. 1914 in Minnesota. He was married to Wilhelmina Paulsdotter Wirkkunen from Finland. They had a daughter Pearl Minna, b. 16 Mar 1901, Menahga, MN, d. 28 Sep 1973 in Hoquiam, WA. Karl and Wilhelmina emigrated, but dates not known.

Any help will be appreciated.

June,
Checking the LDS site, I found that most Ronkainen, also found as Rongain, Ronkain, Rongainen, were from Oulu, Kuopio or Viipuri. Also found Wirkkunen, Virkkunen in Kuopio. Unfortunately, not the ones you're looking for. Found a Wilhelmina Sofia Wirkkunen born 13 Jul 1873 in Pielisjärvi, Kuopio, but her parents were Lars Wirkkunen and Leena Hirvonen.

Thanks, Karen.

Yes, I saw that Wilhelmina, b. 1873 and wondered if she could be IT! I'm thinking that Paul may not have been her father. All the data I have is 2nd and 3rd hand. At least we know of 3 parishes that could be possibilities.

June,
On Ancestry WWI Draft Registration 1917, found William Ronkainen, 31 Jan 1894, born Menahga, MN, living at 803 E 1st St. Aberdeen, Grays Harbor, WA. He's an auto repairman for Alex Ronkainen. Married with children Also supports mother. Claiming exemption due to physical condition unlisted.
NY Passenger List 10 Aug 1885 "Gallia" shows an Anna Ronkanen from Finland Russia and her children, Joha 11, Carl 10, Anna 8 and Ole 4. No info where they're going. Charles claimed in 1910 he emigrated in 1884. ????

Thanks, Karen. It's making sense. Karl/Charles had a brother Alexander - and Karl had a son William, so it seems William was working for his Uncle Alex in WA. Looks like Karl's father died, and his mother took the children to the US - probably to Minnesota.

Karen,

Thanks. Seems like there are more Ronkainen in the US than I could find in Finland. I'll pass this all on to Mel.

Hi June,

Did you happen to check the cemetery photo pages for the Ronkainen name? I noticed several graves, mostly in Rovaniemi, but also in Vörå, Vaasa, and a few others. Thought you might want to check there if you haven't already.
