Hello!

Could someone check the US census for 1900 and 1910 to see the family members of:

Charles Wilson, b. Dec. 19, 1855 in Finland
Died June 28, 1919, Duane St., Astoria.

Father: Jacob Wilson, b. Finland. No information about emigration date or place of birth.

Charles Wilson was a fireman (or fisherman?) and perhaps married with Mary (Maria) Nyman-Niinimäki from Finland.
This was NOT the Charles Wilson (Kankkonen) who was engaged in the fish industry in Astoria.

If possible I would also want to know Charles' parents (Jacob Wilson's) roots in Finland. From which part of Finland were they coming? I know a lot about Mary's ancestors already.

Thanks Denise!

Very good! It seems to be verified that it is the same man. In 1900 their son Charles W. is called Willie; Johan Emil is called Emma and the last boy (From Mary's first marriage in Finland) Herman's name is correctly spelled.

Thanks

Christian

I am a new member. Here. I know quite a lot about the Charles Wilson of the Kankkonen branch. That one was my grandfather, Frans' eldest brother.

Hi Laila!

I think that there were two individuals named Charles Wilson in Astoria at that time. The one I am looking for may perhaps been born in Oulu, Finland in 1855, died in Astoria 1919. He married the widow Mary Gustafson-Nyman and they hade at least one child; Charles William (Bill) Wilson who was a musician and worked at the post office of Astoria. Charles William (Bill) was born in 1888 and died in 1962.

Do you recognize this information about your Charles Wilson (Kankkonen)?

Btw, I know the Kankkonen families in Karleby very well. My wife's sister is married to one of them and some years ago they held a family reunion when their cousins in USA visited Finland.

I have data about these families on my computer, but I don't have access to it now. I also have a name of a relative of a Charles Wilson in Oregon, but will have to get it when I return home in a week. A rew months ago I submitted an article about the Kankkonen brothers to the SFHS Quarterly - can't remember which issue it was.

My Grandfather's brother, Charles Wilson, changed his name from Kalle Kankkonen. He and his brother were involved in Ship Building in Astoria and the establishment of the Union Fishermen's Cannery, of which my Grandfather, Frans, was the first manager. Obviously, different family. I am trying to trawl my memory for these other Wilsons.

Laila,
It would appear that June's article is about your Wilson/Kankkonen family.

Page 36 http://finlander.genealogia.fi/showthread.php?t=7292 has a picture of Kalle Kankkonen who changed his name to Charles Wilson. Also shown is Frithiof Kankkonen, and a label from one of their shipping crates. I'm sure this is your family.
