I live and do genealogy research in Salt Lake City and am having difficulty finding emigrants from Evijärvi to my home county of Iron Co., Mich. because of the lack of records after 1868 when these emigrants were born-

Maria Niemi, wife of Anders Jakobsson Kniivilä b. 1864 (I am working on his ancestry now)

Jack (prob. Jakob) Kniivilä b. 2 Jul 1883

Johan Kaski (Koski?) b. 8 Sep 1871 son of Jakob Kaski/Koski and Minnie (poss. Vilhelmina) Söderena.

Alex Niemi b. 13 Sep 1882, son of Matts Niemi & Lisa Paavonen

his wife Elisabet Norrena b. 15 Jan 1887, dau. of Jaakko Norrena & Maria Kautiainen

Sanna Maria b. 9 Jun 1879, dau. of Matts Puotinen & Liisa Paalanen

Amanda Berquist b. ca. 28 May 1886, dau. of John Puotinen

Alex Pesonen b. 7 Apr 1877, son of Jakob Pesonen & Hanna Dahlbacka

John Felix Aution b. 8 Feb 1883, son of Elias Autio & Greta Kurola??

his wife Serafia Kaski/Koski b. 1882, dau. of Jakob Kaski/Koski & Minnie Söderena (listed above)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just need information back to the available records - the rest, I can do. Many of these are ancestors of my cousins.

kiitoksia/tack så mycket,
Wayne Ohlsson

Hi Wayne,
I have the names Norrena, Kautiainen, Dahlbacka, etc. in my genealogy from my step great- grandfather, Matt Granbacka's side of the family. When I get home from work tonight I will send you a gedcom. Matt Granbacka (Rambacka) was the second husband of my great grandmother, Toini Aliina Palmgren (Kalio).

Sincerely,
Denise

Hi, Hej, Moi Verna!

Thank you. I am related to the Eino Kaski family. I would be interested in what you have on the Kaski family in America - but I am most interested in the ancestry.

Hi Verna,

Thank you very much! This is great! You don't have any information regarding Vilhelmina's husband Jakob Kaski? Do you know if he was born in Evijärvi or his date of birth - or the date of birth of his son Juho?

I can maybe find some information from HISKI, but if you have more information, that would be nice.

Warm regards,
Wayne Gustav

Hi Verna and Wayne!

Just noticed from Verna's list, that Vilhelmina Söderena was Einar Swan's grandfather Aleksander Joutsen's first cousin.
Their common ancestors are Johan Thomasson Joutsen 1776-1844 and Lisa Mattsdr Söderkniivilä 1780-1848.

Makes Vilhelmina also my FFFF's 4th cousin (through Thomas Påhlsson Söderkultalahti) and 6th cousin (through Josef Olofsson Hyytinen)

Always interested in linking distant Hyytinen relatives...

:) Jaska

Hi/Moi Jaska!
Thanks for your reply. I have just been looking at Einar Swan's webpage and found some of that information. Now if I can only find information on the others in my initial query - enough to at least get me back to the Evijärvi birth records - in most cases date of births of the emigrants' parents.

When I saw the name Joutsen I realized this linked to Einar Swan. I may contact Sven Bjerstedt and tell him about this new development.

I calculated that Wilhelmina was my 3rd cousin three times removed.

Wayne,

I forgot to mention that I have an Anders Jakobsson Kniivilä- Jacobsson, b. 16 May 1864, Evijärvi, who married 12 Aug 1893, Ludington, MI to Sanna Eriksdotter Nääs-Näsi-Autio, b. 3 Nov 1872, Alahärma. They had a daughter Hilma, b. 1897 in Ludington. She married Johannes Mattsson Kivela. I know their son Robert.

Can there be 2 people named Anders Jakobsson Kniivilä, b. 1864 in Evijärvi? I have no indication that Anders Jakobsson Kniivilä - Jacobsson married Maria Niemi.

Hi June,

I found
93f Antti Jaakonp. Kniivilä O: - B:Mar 18 1864 P:Evijärvi E:unk

Iron County Finns at various churches from this webpage:

I believe I got Mathew's parents from his marriage record in Crystal Falls, Michigan in 1908 (to Hilma Karkiainen)

Anders/Antti presumably died in Amasa (near Crystal Falls) 8 Feb 1907 - something I can double check this week.

Mathew's son Earl's wife is related to me.

Hi Verna,

I just noticed that you have Jakob's marriage to Vilhelmina in 1877, 6 years after their son Johan was born - 1871. Vilhelmina would have been 34 years old in 1877 - could you have meant 1867?

Evidently there were two babies born in Evijärvi in 1864, named Anders Jacobsson Kniivilä. The one I have was born 16 May 1864 to Jacob Andersson Kniivilä and Maria Mattsdotter Kultalahti. According to the info. I have, Anders Jacobsson died in Amasa, MI 8 Feb 1907. He had previously lived in Ludington, MI and his 4 children were born there. He moved to Amasa ca 1900. He took the name Jacobson in the US. His daughter Hilma was married in Negaunee in 1920 to Johannes Kivela and the family evidently moved to Watton, MI.

Hi Wayne,

Johan was born to Vilhelmina out of wedlock, and the date of marriage 1877 is correct. Who the father was I don't know, it may have been Jakob, but that's not verified.

Hi June,
This is what I found in the Iron Co. Vital Records today:
Anders/Andrew Jackobson died as you said 8 Feb 1907 in Amasa - however, parents listed for him were Jacob Jacobson and Saima Autio - age listed was 42 yrs, 10 mos. & 20 days - which would put his DOB about 19 Mar 1864.

I found the marriage record for Matt Norrkniivila (son of Anders Norrkniivila & Maria Niemi) 2 May 1908 in Crystal Falls to Hilma Karkiainen (dau. of Peter Karkiainen & Margareta Michelson). The DOB listed for Matt Norrkniivila in his naturalization records was 21 Feb 1885 Evijarvi - age listed in his death record of 1 May 1931 confirms his DOB, but mother listed as Elisabeth. Based on this information, I no longer feel that Anders Jakobsson is Matt's father - all we know is that his father is Anders Norrkniivila.

The children of Matt & Hilma list her as Hilma Isaacson. Their first children Veino & Anna were b. 22 Dec 1908 in Republic, Marquette Co. (SSDI lists Veino's DOB as 23 Oct 1908). There is a Hilma Isaacson with DOB June 1887 listed in the 1900 census for Republic - father John Isaacson, mother Maggie - both b. in Sweden - I have from SSDI a DOB of 26 June 1888.

There was another Anders Kniivilä b. in 1864 Nov 13 to Matts Eriksson & Maria Jakobsdotter. There is listed on the Kniivilä farm in Evijärvi a Jakob Jakobsson & Lisa Mattsdotter.

Hope this clears up any confusion.
