Hi,
A visitor, Eric Johnson, to the SFHS offices has requested help locating information on his greatgrandfather, probably Johan Jakob Hvit, who came to the Hvit Farm as a son-in-law. Birthdate probably Jan 5 1821, baptism registered in Nykarleby.

Eric's grandfather Erik Johansson Hvit was born 9 March 1872 in Munsala, youngest of 3sons, the only one to leave for the USA. He was known as Erik Johnson in the US.

The family were Baptists and settled eventually in Larsmont, Minnesota. Erik would like to verify his grandfather's activities on Isle Royale, Michigan. The family story is that he built a dock and resort with cabins on the island around 1900 or earlier.

Any help is greatfully received.
Thanks!
Syrene

Hi,
Here is Erik Johnson's 1900 Census in Keweenaw County, Michigan. Isle Royale is in Keweenaw County. His occupation is a fisherman. I'll check a book I have on Isle Royale to see if it has further information.

Hi,
Here is an article about the history of Isle Royale, and Erik Johnson fits right in the time period for the fishing industry.
