Hi,
Here is a start for your search. Maria Saarala was going to Gardner, Massachusetts to her husband, Kalle Saarala, with children Johan and Väino.
I'll see what else I can find for you. :)

Sincerely,
Denise

Hi,
Do you have any further information on this family? I am finding nothing further in the 1910 Census, military records, death records, etc. Did they return to Finland before 1910?

Hi,
I found this on LDS, and it appears it is your Maria, but... how could she be immigrating in 1905?

Thanks Denise

You are so right--and when I checked my records--her mother's death date--it was 1888 (!) so could easily be a mixup with hers. Sofia Honkala passed away 14 Oct 1888.

Maybe finding Maria's SS number would give some leads. Saarala is a quite unusual name even in Finland so might not be too many with that name in USA. Name Saarela more common.

How far back do USA SS numbers go?

Thanks again

Anita

Hi Anita,
Social Security began in about 1935, and I'm not finding her in that index at all as she was about 74 years old then. Could she have gone by her mother's name, Honkala? I am not finding anything on her, her children or husband? This is quite odd, so I'm guessing that the name Saarala was really slaughtered in transcription, or the name was changed. On Ancestry.com, when entering a name, you can go just by first names and birthdates, or immigration dates, without even using the last name, or you can use soundex for the last name and come up with various spellings, or wildcards are also another way to search. I'm really puzzled by this one. Give me a bit of time to work on it, and if you have any information, such as brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, etc. that came to the USA, please give me that information. I have found people by using that method when all searches turn up nothing. Did Sofia Honkala live in the USA?

Best Regards,
Denise

Hi Denise

Second try.
Firstly, Sofia Honkala did not go to USA . Her daugther Edla Mattsdtr Saarala-(married to Matts Andersson Tikkanen) had three children who did go to USA.
1. Otto Fritiof Mattsson b. 5 Mar 1889, Kälviä, Finland, d.6 Oct 1952 in USA.
2. Helmi Elisabeth Mattsdtr b. 1 Aug 1898, Kälviä, Finland, d. 27 Dec 1995 in USA
3. Kalle Valfrid Mttsson Tikkanen b.2 Jan 1901, Kälviä, Finland, d. 18 Sep 1947 in USA
He had a son Pauli Walfrid Tikkanen b. 10 Aug 1926, D 20 Nov 1998 in USA
He in turn has a son Paul I correspond with since last year. He has no clues about Maria either.
I found some notes I jotted down years ago at Kälviä parish office when I searched information ab. Maria Saarala. They had an address: Joulieville, Gogebic, Mich--no street such.
Her bdate in my Notes was 14 Apr 1861--not November.
I had also noted "back 1904/1905"--probably when she returned to USA. There was also a date 27 Apr 1923--no explanation. She did marry a Märsylä--but no-one seems to know anything about him.

Sincere thanks

Anita Löf

This one caught my eye, as the wife is a Mary, the children are her's, and they are listed as Marsyla for surname. Did she marry again? The children are listed as Jacob Ruppa's stepchildren. The birthdate of Mary is not correct though! Also there is another Märsylä family above their census record.

I did find out that Maria Saarala Märsylä died 27 Apr 1923. Could that help you?

Hi Denise

Almost wish for your sake I had not asked about Maria !! It is a tough one--

Doubt she did live in Canada--but then--how do I know. You have to keep in mind that there are a lot more Saarelas in Finland than Saaralas and Maria's last name is the latter. It does make a difference--

Did you have any luck cheking the deathdate I sent of Maria's--or April 27th 1923?

Thanks for all you are doing--sure do appreciate you

Anita

Hi Anita,
I had no luck in the death date on Ancestry.com. In the process of transcribing the name Saarala, a's look like o's or e's when written, so it could be anything ! I've gone thru spellings such as Sairila, Seria, Sirla, Siirila Sirola, Surola, Sralla, Soierla, Saarala, Saarela, Saarola, and more. If only we knew which state she died in! I'll keep working on it, and hopefully Ancestry will get more records online. As in my great grandparents, deaths in in early to mid 1900's, the records are still not available, only by writing to the county or state of death to get death certificates, so the social security index on Ancestry is of no help. Many states have their own websites now, with cemetery records, deaths, etc. that are not on Ancestry, but that means going state by state. Eventually something will turn up; just a matter of time!

Best Regards,
Denise

HI....

This may not be any help to you but there were Marsyla's living in Aitkin County, Minnesota, U.S. I don't know much about the earlier family members but believe they were here quite early. You might want to try US Genweb site .They should have a Aitkin County Site there with links to other records. Just a thought...... Karen
