DO NOT USE A CALCULATOR OR PENCIL AND PAPER

Start with 1000
Add 40
Add another 1000
Add 30
Add another 1000
Add 20
Add another 1000
Add 10

What is your total?

---------------------------------------000000-----------------------------

If you come up with 5000, you are incorrect. The correct answer is apparently 4,100 - you can now check with a calculator. Goodness only knows how this works. I came up with 5000 many, many times working it out in my head. Never was very good at maths though.:( :(

Sorry to say Gwenda, but I just cannot figure out how you ever could get 5000
The correct answer just popped out before I could read the "problem", in a second or something.
Is that because we use plastic in almost all payments and the sense of numbers has thus disappeared?

I've never been good at Maths, but am finally able to do this on paper as well as the calculator. It's all to do with "carrying the 1" it seems - where I was going wrong anyway. I think this must be the case with a few other people also as I copied this from a magazine where both answers were given.
