Hello to Finlander members;
No one has found mysterious surname as yet.
Carl August (?Kolteen) Nyberg, b. Jan, 1841, Bertby, d. Nov 1, 1910 of cholera.
First wife, Johanna Matilda Zetterman, b. 1841, d, 1883, she gave birth to 9 children.
He was also engaged to Evelina Wilhelmina Johansdotter, and had son Johan Sigfrid Nyberg, b. Jun 12, 1885, but died 1887.
Second wife, Ida Matilda Osterlund, b. Sep 22, 1867, Odkarby, Saltvik and gave birth to 11 children.
In 1983, Marion Swanson from USA, maiden name Nyberg, visited Saltvik, Aland, to gather information on family. She had discovered the surname of (?Kolteen). Anders Nyberg was listed as step-father, b. 1796, Lapptrask, Finland. Carl's full sister Anna Josefina, b. 4.12.1839, Bertby, and Carl's half sister was Amanda Matilda Nyberg, b. Feb 25, 1848 in Skarpans.
My question to the forum members is this, where did Marion Swanson find the surname writen of Kolteen? Most likely in records in Saltvik, as that is where she had stayed to do her research. Please help on the (?Kolteen). Thank You, Rodney K. Hasting

Rodney,
Looking at Hiski records for Saltvik, there is no birth record for Carl August in 1841. There is one for 21.2.1843 for a Carl August Danielsson born in Bertby, Saltvik to Bondmåg Daniel Gustaf Ersson and Anna Jansdotter. There was nothing under Nyberg. Kolteen is not found in their database. I found a marriage for Dräng Daniel Gustaf Ersson and Bondesdtr. Anna Jansdotter of Bertby village 23.1.1843.

Sorry,
Just saw that you had "many previous posts" on the info. I sent you (maybe you should just add to your original post, instead of starting new ones; it would be easier to follow all information you already have). Have you tried contacting Marion Swanson?

Rodney,
Strangely, if you Google "Kolteen", all the information refers to Alaska and totem poles. Nothing comes up as a surname or Finland. Karen

Hello Karen, Yes, I had found the same information as well. It was about Captain Cook, and when his ship was in Alaska, but makes one think. The main clue is the way Marion (Nyberg) Swanson had discovered and written the information from Saltvik, Carl August Nyberg, Father (Kolteen), step-father Anders Nyberg. Carl was six years old when his mother Anna Stina Ericsdotter married Anders. Saltvik Church, Father Unknown, and Saltvik Libary told me (?Kolteen) don't know, both had no clue of what it meant, other than (Kolteen) related to carl's biological father in some way. Almost makes one think I am an heir to a throne somewhere, or a decendent of lawless pirates. But I am almost sure, I will never unravel the (?Kolteen).
Thank You, RKH

I told Rodney that I found an old query from 2002 on RootsWeb for Colteen from Ireland. I've noticed in Finland that "c" and "k" are used interchangeably as the first letter in a first name: Karl/Carl, Karin/Carin, etc. So it's possible that Kolteen and Colteen could be the same.

Hi June;
I read your message, and will try again with different Ireland genealogy sites. It would be OK with me to have Irish DNA, as in my father's family tree, there are a few. I will try my best, Thanks, RKH

Hi,
Browsing Ancestry.com there is two Kolteen, and one Colteen listed. Could it be Russian? Serbian? Croatian? Here is what I've found.

Hello Denise and Karen;
The answer to the Kolteen factor lies within Aland's archives.
Anna Stina Ericsdotter b. 25 May 1811 Saltvik, died about 1850 of cholera. Anna's first child Anna Josefina born 1839 died about 1850 of cholera, Anna's second child, Carl August, born 1841, died 1910. Carl moved to St Petersburg Russia to become a Tailor, began emigrating to USA in 1868. Carl had fathered 21 children total, 4 died young, 1 ran away, but 16 emigrated to America, one was my Grandfather, August Evi Nyberg, born 20 Sep 1894.
The Kolteen factor, had to taken place on Aland between Anna's birth 1811 and Anna's second child's birth 1841. Figuring Anna was 28 when she gave birth to her first child, the Kolteen factor happened in Aland between 1838-1841, so what was happing in Aland in these three years to bring about Kolteen? Anna's father was Eric Jansson, born 6 Jun 1779, mother Anna Maja Mattsdotter, born 7 Mar 1782. Anna's parents were married about 1810. I may find an answer in her parents Perish records. I think Anna may have ranaway with Kolteen, maybe they were not married, and maybe Anna did not give birth of her two children in Aland, Finland, who knows?

Could the name Kolteen have come about through the Swedish rule and mean something in the Swedish language, or under Russian rule in 1809 in Russian language?

Hi Denise;
I got your message, and you maybe right about name variations, or a soldier, or Swedish rule, or may mean sometime in Swedish other than a name. This I do know, Anna Stina Ericsdotter had two illegitimate children, (I think, unless she was married to Kolteen), Anna Josefina b. 4.12.1839, and Carl August b. Jan 1841. I also know, Marion (Nyberg) Swanson in 1985 from USA, visited Saltvik, Aland, Finland, and she either read or was told about Carl August Nyberg's father was Kolteen, it had to be written somewhere in Saltvik, but was not found in the birth book of Saltvik. Anna born 25.5.1811, first child born 1839, Anna was 28 years old, and last child born with ?Kolteen as father 1841, so the Kolteen factor was involved between 1838-1841, so what was going on in Aland for those three years? Aland under Russian rule, I believe Aland was at this time, so maybe Anna Stina Ericsdotter meet-up with a Russian soldier, and ran away with him somewhere,? Forttress area? I will start searching your suggestions, but I can't find Kolteen or Colteen in Ireland. I'm thinking now, Russian, and where Anna gave birth to both children ? Maybe that's why no birth records in Saltvik. Thank You Denise!!

Ingemar Ekman posted this article in Delphi about Åland and there is a brief mention of the Russians - maybe he can clarify whether Russians actually occupied Åland.

In Saltvik Church found Anna Stina Ericsdotter b. 25.5.1811 in Bolstaholm Geta. She moved from Geta to Germundo in Saltvik with her parents later with them to Bertby, a part of Bertby Village. In wedding book Anna married Anders Nyberg b. 1796 Lapptrask Finland died 22.8.1854 Skarpans Sund they married on 25.7.1847 in Nov 1847 they moved to Skarpans Sund. In Church book in Saltvik Parish register, no man by name Kolteen can be found. Anna Stina's three children Anna Josefina b. 4.12.1839 Bertby d. 1850, Carl August b. Jan 1841 d, 1910 USA. Anna and Anders only child Amanda Mathilda Nyberg b. 25.2.1848. Parish register of Saltvik archives of Aland in Mariehamn has Anna, Anders, Anna, Carl, Amanda in this book, the only book Carl August was in, Anna Josefina found in birth book, but not Carl, why? In Parish book Carl was written with C, his birthday was not noted, only that Carl August was born Jan 1841.
OK, Anna Josefina and Carl August, who would be their biological father and how could one find this information? ?Kolteen? Thank You for reading, RKH

Anna Stina Ericsdotter b. 1811, died about 1850 from cholera. Anna's first child Anna Josefina b. 1839, died around 1850 also from cholera, and Anna's second child Carl August b. 1841, died 1910 USA. Hi Rodney,
In the new book "Familes and farms in Saltvik" by Håkan Skogsjö, I found Anna Stina Eriksdotter born 25 May 1811 in Bollstaholm Geta. Her parents were:
Erik Johansson b 6 Jun 1779 in Hjortö, Saltvik, died 3 Sep 1854 in Bertby Saltvik, married 14 Apr 1805 to Anna Maria Mattsdotter b 7 Mar 1782 in Ödkarby, died 15 Nov 1855 in Bertby Saltvik. They had total 9 children. 6 of them died in young age or without any family.
Brother Karl Eriksson born 1 Jun 1818 in Germundsö Saltvik moved 1833 to the neighbour parish Geta and brother Matts Eriksson b 23 Jan 1823 in Germundsö moved 1839 to Sankt Petersburg.
