Five years ago scientists thought they had solved the mystery when DNA testing identified the baby boy (Unknown Child) found floating after the Titanic sank, as a 13-month old Finnish baby. The body was buried 90+ years ago in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was later identified by DNA testing of bone and teeth fragments as Eino Panula, whose mother and his four brothers drowned. His relatives came from Finland to visit his grave five years ago. They have been notified of the mistaken identity. A test of the child's HVS1, a type of mitochondria DNA molecule, did not match the Panula family. The DNA team eventually found a surviving maternal relative of an English boy on the ship, Sidney Leslie Goodwin, 19 months old, who submitted DNA evidence. They came up with a match. Sidney was traveling with his parents and their five other children to start a new life in Niagara Falls, NY. The family had been booked on another ship, but because of a strike they were transferred to the Titanic. They all perished and their bodies were not recovered.

How sad.
