I am trying to help a friend with her Finnish family...she doesn't have a computer. I have found her g-grandparents, John Thompson, b July 1839 & his wife Mary b 1843. They immigrated in 1881 or 1884 with two sons: Henry b 1871 & Matt b 1875. They are on the 1900 census together in Mendocino County CA, USA. Both Henry & Matt married Finnish girls. Henry, my friend's grandfather, married Hilda M, we think her maiden name was Wilson. She was b about 1884 & immigrated in 1900. Is there anyone on the forum who can help me by checking the emigration from the Finnish side for these people? I realize that the names are probably all 'Americanized', so if someone can help me with the Finnish real names I'd sure appreciate ANY & ALL help I can get!
Thanks,
Judy

Hi Judy,
Thought I would post the actual 1900 Census on John Thompson and family for everyone to see. It appears son Henry was born in June 1871 and Matt was born Sept. 1875 which may help.

Here's Henry and Hilda in 1930. Looks like your years of emigration are correct.

Judy,
CA Death Index says Hilda Marie Thompson born 22 Dec 1885 other country
Died 5 Oct 1955 Los Angeles county, father's surname Granquist, mother's maiden name Millicent??? sounds more like a first name

Matt Thompson 2 Jan 1875 other country, died 22 Sep 1940 Mendocino county. I am attaching his WWI Draft Reg and his census record. Also the 1920 census for Henry and Hilda.

Thank you all for your census & WWI draft registration helps. I know that the Hilda Marie Thompson that died in Los Angeles is not the right Hilda. But thanks for trying! This is the right lady, from the Mendocino Co Index site, cemetery list. Thompson, Hilda M. 12 25 1884 11 17 1964 Rose Memorial Park, Fort Bragg Wife of Henry Thompson

Thanks, Kerstin, for the additional census information. I'm wondering why Henry was a boarder in Ukiah if his family was living on the coast....hmmm. Could he have been at the Mendocino State Hospital? That was a TB place & a mental institution, but I've never known anyone to show up as a 'boarder' there.

Judy,

I tried to look through HisKi for any of this family. I looked for Henrik, b. June 1871 to a father Johan and mother Maria - there are lots of them. Also tried to find a Matts b. 1875 to Johan and Maria - there are lots of them. Then I assumed that John Thompson could be Johan Thomasson married to Maria. I checked for marriage records and found lots of them, too. But in Antrea parish there are 7 marriages between 1863-1870 of Johan Thomasson to Maria. Do you have any documents showing John Thompson's father's name? Was it Thomas/Tuomas? There are tons of men named Johan who were born in July 1839 - without a patronymic it will be difficult to find anything about him. Did you see the Private Message I sent you?

Hi June:
I just read your private message. I wish I knew more about John & Mary & the boys. I figured their given names would be Johan & Maria & that the surname might have been Thomasson. My friend didn't even know her g-grandparents came to America! She has an aunt still living & plans to visit her in Nov. Maybe this aunt has some records about HER grandparents! But right now, this is about all I know & it's from census records. There are two years given on the census. One is 1881 for the entire family on the 1900 & the other for Henry & his family show 1884. Thanks so very much for trying to help us!

Judy,
That 1920 census gives an Annie B. It really is Arnie B or Arnold B in 1930. His death is under Arnie. I found several of the births on the CA Birth Index, but there are alot of the children that should be on it and aren't, unless they have the Thompson spelled wrong. I found Henry Edwin, Felix W and an Ernest W, but census has middle initial as H, so maybe it's not him. Two list mother's name as Wilson, one Urlson. Karen

Hi Karen:
When I checked the Mendocino Co. births on the website for that county, I noticed that most of the children were not listed. Including the mother of my friend who was born in 1905. I tried finding Hilda M Wilson on the Ellis Island site for 1900 & found nothing. Now I'll try Urlson. Who knows! Thanks for the additional info.

Hi Margareta:

Thank you SO MUCH for that information about Henry Thompson. It's the correct family. My friend's mother is Senia Nordeen. What is this? From ”Kirkollinen Kalenteri 1957”???

By the way, my grandfather was from Vasa Finland. He emigrated in 1906 & came to Mendocino Co. CA. His name was Karl Erik Westergärd in Finland but he became Charles Eric West here. I have made contact with some second cousins who are the descendants of his only sibling that remained in Finland.

Thanks Margareta. They certainly collected information from all over the country where Finnish people settled for that book.

Finland's Family History website has images of early church records for the Parish of Pyhäjoki starting at 1722. You'll find the Kopisto farm listed.
