On the Institute of Migration is listed a Iikka Raappana that traveled to Canada on May 20, 1899. I am interested in any information about this person that I can find. I don't have a subscription to look up any details. If anyone has any information to share, it would be greatly appreciated. I would like information on where he travelled from, what ship and port he used and his destination if possible.
Thank you,
Darrell Kaikkonen

Hi,
When trying to get the passport info. from the Institute of Migration, there was an error, and it came up with 4 or 5 passports all together that were not Iikka Raappana's. But...there was a passenger record for him.

Iikka Raappana was from Paavola so the direction was right,Paavola is located south-southeast of Oulu.Looks like we have churchrecord for Paavola at the archive so i will take a look on Tuesday next week. His age in 1899 was 39 so that give us ab. 1850.

Hi Denise and Christer,
Thank you both for your help. My greatgrandfather Isaac (Iikka) had his wife pass away after childbirth in April of 1899 in Minnesota. I suspect he went back to Finland in regard to her death. His gravestone indicates he was 60 years old when he died. A 1900 census gives his birth as July 1857. In the summer of 1900 he married his second wife Kreeta Pyykkö of Utajärvi after she emigrated to Minnesota. She was born November 3, 1861 to Erkki Pyykkö and Kreeta Vimpari. Erkki died at Utajärven Niskankylä Pyykkössä.
It appears to me that this is where Iikka went and arranged for Kreeta to come to Minnesota to marry him. I have seen a map of Niska village and there is a Pyykkö farm near a Raappana farm.
On Iikka's (Isaac Rauma) death certificate it gives his fathers name as Matt Raappana who would probably have been born around 1830 or so.
There were two Matt Raappana's born at Utajärvi near that time but I have had no way to check them out. I found them on HisKi, and the details on farm 54 does list a Erkki Pyykkö.
I guess now I need to find out if one of the Matt Raappana's of Niska village had sons named Iikka (Isak), Matt (Isaac's brother born about 1850), and Antti (Andrew Rauma born November 1865) according to records found so far. Isaac and his brother Matti emigrated to the U.S. about July of 1880. Andrew emigrated here about April of 1886.
I had previously thought they were from Suomussalmi, but maybe they were not. Or else Isaac knew the Raappana's of Niska village and went there to find a new wife?
Iikka came to Whitewood Saskatchewan which is north of Brocket, ND where his brother Matti lived. He must have used the Canadian transcontinental railroad. So all this seems to be meshing together. Hopefully I can learn more.

Hi Darrell,
As Christer mentioned (he did a fabulous search in Utajärvi for me), I might have a connection with your Raappana family. I have a Maria Elisabet Michdr. Raappana married to Pehr Matsinpoikä Halonen from Muhos, 2 July 1835. :)

Hi Darrell
Checked the Utajärvi curchbook for Iikka (Isaac) Antti ( Anders) and Matts( Matts) and it seems like they were not born in Utajärvi, there is a Mattts Raappana b.Jan 1 1830 but his children does not match any of these so your suggestion about Suomussalmi might be right, there is a Matts Raappana b.March 13 1830 but digiarkisto.org churchrecord ends at 1850 so it doesnt help.We dont have records for Suomussalmi at all at the archive.I will check record in Paavola too for Iikka Raappana.
I think (Kreta )Greta Pyykkö is the daughter of Erik Johansson Pyykkö b.Nov 7 1804 and wife Greta Staffansdotter b.Sept 9 1818. They lived on Pyykkö farm no 10 in Niska village 1873-1882.Note says that Greta moved to Uleåborg ( Oulu) in 1879 and i could not find any note of her returning back but thats possible. Birthrecord for Greta says Nov 2 1861 you had Nov 3 so this has to be checked once again.

Hi Christer,
Nice to hear from you. Thanks much for this interesting information, it helps a lot. I have had a search done in Suomussalmi, so I will email you and give you some details from what I found there.

Hi Darrell
I did a quick check in Paavola churchrecords but could not find any Isaak or Iikka Raappana but there is a lot of pages to go thru so a will check again later, tried Suomussalmi too but our churchrecord starts at 1860 and ends 1890 so i could not look for birth records, there is a lot of Raappana in Suomussalmi but nothing really seamed to match.

Hi Christer,

Thanks for the latest lookups that you did. I appreciate your help. I was looking on Mapquest for Paavola, Finland and the map had four different Paavola's. The one near Oulu, and three in the south near Helsinki and Hanko. I am now wondering if Iikka Raappana who travelled from Hanko in 1899 was coming from one of those Paavola places? And if he was an unrelated Raappana? But on HisKi I only found Raappana's born in Rovaniemi, Utajärvi, and Suomussalmi mainly. The closest first name matches are in Suomussalmi. My greatgrandfather Isaac (Rauma, Roman in the U.S.) Raappana's brother Matti (Roman in the U.S.) had children with names like Anders, Anna, and Jacob (Jaakko) which match the Suomussalmi Matt Raappana and Elsa Kanniainen children. That family all died between 1857 and 1868. Several in the same year, which sounds like disease or hunger, leaving only Matt, Israel and Anders who are the closest match I have found yet. Also in Reverend Ilmonen's book, he listed a Isak Rooman as being from Suomussalmi. Matt and Isaac lived in Frederick, South Dakota from 1882 to 1895, and the local genealogist there said they were from Suomussalmi. But the mystery for me is: How did Isaac Rauma come up with a second wife from Utajärvi in only a years time? He had two young children to raise so he needed some help.
Again, thanks for being so helpful.

Hi Darrell
Looks like Suomussalmi, Suolijärvi 1843-1850 would be the churchrecord to look in but unfortunately the churchrecord at our archive start at 1860 so im not sure the farms are carrying the same names at that time but i will give it a try on Saturday.I will also look in Utajärvi, perhaps there are some tracks of Iikka at the Pyykkö farm where he met his second wife Kreta.

Hi Christer,

I found for Kreeta Pyykkö a record that gives her birthdate as November 2, 1861. You were correct.

I have some Suomussalmi farm name/number charts for different years for 1723, 1855, and 1879. Also a Suomussalmi map for 1898 with farm names shown on it.
For the Matt Raappana b. 1818 and Elsa Kanniainen family, the farm names for his parents, where he worked, and the earliest Raappana farms are:

Seppala 8 where his mother Anna Seppanen was born. This farm was split off to Naljänka 2 in the great land reform and Raappana's lived there.

Juntula (Suolijärvi 3 and at other times 5). This is where many of the Raappana’s originate from. Israel Raappana was born here, he married Anna Seppänen. They were the parents of Matti Raappana born in 1818.

Mustavaara (Kianta 41), Mustavaara means Black Ridge, this is where Matti Raappana born in 1818 worked, as did his brother Israel Raappana.

Syrjävaara (Suolijärvi 24), Syrjävaara means ridge that is far from, this is where Matti Raappana born in 1818 was born. His father Israel Raappana died here.

Hope this helps,
Darrell

Hi Denise,

Thanks much for those nice farm name lists. I am sure I will be reviewing them often. I saved them and printed them out so I can study them anytime. I wonder where those lists came from as some items have page numbers, making me wonder if a person can look at further details, or if the occupant of a farm's first name can be determined etc.

I appreciate your help.

Hi Darrell,
Let's see if this link opens from the Institute of Migration. It explains the farm names http://www.migrationinstitute.fi/emreg2/sources/farmnames.html

Hi Darrell
I had no great success with your Raappana ancestors last Saturday so i will try again tomorrow. I did find Matt Raappana born in 1818 and wife Elsa Kanniainen but their children does not match any of what we are looking but there are atleast 3other Matt Raappana born in 1830 to follow up so there is still hope. Do your surname Kaikkonen have connection to Suomussalmi too, i just wondered because there was a lot of Kaikkonen surnames in Suomussalmi.
I checked Paavola too but looks like we dont get anywhere with that, not a singel Raappana surname in that place.

Hi Christer,

Thanks for your latest search, sorry to take so much of your time on this. If this gets to be too time consuming for you, I will understand if you can't search much longer.

I have some information on a couple Matt Raappana's of Suomussalmi that someone sent me a few years ago as follows.

I traced Matti 1827 who married Elsa Väisänen 1834 in 27.10.1960 (date error).
ths couple had son Pekka born 28.6.1861 ... after that family moved
to Puolanka parish.

Matti Raappana 1830 married Sofia Kemppainen 1825. got children
kaisa 1852, Matti 1855 and Elsa 1858 after that Matti died 13.8.1858.

The above Matti Raappana's don't seem to match and one of them died in Finland.

Then there is other information for the Utajärvi Matt Henrikinpoika Raappana born 26.5.1832. He moved with his parents from Utajärvi to Saräisniemi in 1835.
The Säräisniemi church records were destroyed in a fire. The books start from the year 1859. In the Säräisniemi books for 1859-1870, Matti is not in them. He has disappeared. Don't know if he moved somewhere on his own or died. His parents are mentioned with their other children.

There is a Antii Henrikinpoika Raappana born 30.10.1865 to the brother (Henrik) of Matti Henrikinpoika Raappana b. 1832. This birthdate is one month earlier than one birthdate I have for Andrew Rauma of 30.11.1865. The thought here was that Antti was a cousin to Isaac instead of a brother as I had thought he might be. This Antti moved back later to Utajärvi.

Matti Henrikinpoika Raappana's parents had these children.

Matti Henrikinpoika Raappana b. 26.5.1832 Utajärvi
Henrik Henrikinpoika Raappana b. 2.4.1835 Säräisniemi (ilmeisesti).
Anna Greta Raappana b. 10.5.1841 Säräisniemi (ilmeisesti).
Hedvig Raappana b. 10.12.1843 Säräisniemi (ilmeisesti).
Jaakko Henrikinpoika Raappana b. 22.7.1845 Säräisniemi (ilmeisesti).
Note: Matti Roman named 3 of his children in the U.S. Matti, Anna and Jacob. Although these names were common at that time. So it could be a coincidence.

I wonder if the church fire occurred after 1845 because the children above's records must have survived somewhere. If the fire occurred between 1845 and 1859, then Matti Henrikinpoika Raappana b. 1832 would have been between 13 years old and 27 years old. Time enough to have had a Matti and a Isaac.

The above information is all I received a few years ago from a person in Finland. If Matti Roman was born in 1850 as found in records here. Then Matti Heikinpoika Raappana b. 1832 would have been about 18 years old. Isaac was born in 1857, so Matti Heikkinpoika b. in 1832 would have been about 25 years old. So these two births could have occurred and the records still be destroyed if the fire occurred between 1857 and 1859. I don't know when the fire occurred.

The fire could have occurred about 1857 or 1858, then they built a new church and the books were restarted in 1859. Lots of guessing going on here.

I don't know if any of this is helpful.

Hi Christer,

I forgot to mention that my Kaikkonen surname comes from Vasaraperä village
near Kuusamo. My greatgrandfather was born Elias Poropudas b. 9.29.1834, and he used the alias Kiviniemi for awhile. He went to Rovaniemi in 1859 and back to Kuusamo in 1860. Later he moved to Kemijärvi where my grandfather was born.
It seems to me I saw a Elias Kaikkonen in the Suomussalmi parish records one time, but I don't know if it was him or not. Elias had lived on a Kaikkonen farm when he was about two years old for a short time and later took that name.

Hi Darrell
Most of the Raappana names that you had on your list are names that i checked too and none of them seems to match, i have three more Raappana, Matt Raappana Feb 10 1827, Matt Raappana March 13 1830 and Matt Raappana Dec 13 1830 but not even these matches with children Matts, Isak and Anders so i begin to think that Utajärvi could be the place to search in anyway. And why is Paavola mentioned in Iikkas passport, well Paavola is not so far away from Utajärvi so its not impossible he left from Paavola or might be born in Paavola and moved to Utajärvi.I have one Matts Raappana born Jan 1 1830 in Niska village ,Utajärvi that i will check again on Saturday and hopefully this will lead somewhere.
Suomussalmi is pretty far away from Kuusamo so i guess these Kaikkonen surnames are different from yours.
And dont worry about the time spending on this,i do this just for the fun.

Hi Christer,

Thanks for your searches and the latest info you just sent. You have a good handle on how to go about this search, and if Utajärvi is the best possiblility then I have another item that might also point there.

Isaac Rauma my greatgrandfather and his second wife Kreeta Pyykkö of Utajärvi had one child, a daughter Aina Rauma who married an immigrant named Juho Heikki Pinoniemi born 18.09.1887 in Yli-Kiiminki, Finland which is also close to Utajärvi. It may be a coincidence that he also came from there, I don't know. He came here to visit an aunt who lived near Isaac Rauma's farm, and ended up marrying Aina.
I have seen Juho had made a couple trips from Finland back to the U.S. on the Institute of Migration website in 1907, 1909 and 1915. He worked in Michigan for eight years and was in the military during WWI. After that he met and married Aina in 1920 here.
Isaac's first wife Anna Waisanen who died in April 1899 was my greatgrandmother. She came from Jokijärvi near Taivalkoski, Finland. Maybe that is how Isaac was associated with Suomussalmi. But really came from Utajärvi?

Thanks again, Darrell

Hi Darrell
Now when i checked a little about neighbour parishes of Utajärvi i found out that in Puolanka which is close to Utajärvi is a village Suolijärvi too and in that village lived a lot of Raappana too so maybe this is the place to look in. Found one Matt Raappana b. Feb 23 1850 in HISKI but i have to check what churchrecords we have in the archive.

Hi Christer,

Your last mention of Matti Raappana b. Feb. 23, 1850 is a good match for my greatgrandfather's brother Matti (Raappana) Roman. I have a North Dakota Census where he lived for 1900. It gives his birthdate as Feb. 1850, and his age is given as 50 years old. I think the census is taken in July.

I also have his death record for 1908 and on October 25, his age is given as 57 years old. So I think you have found the right Matti Raappana there.

Also an early genealogist in South Dakota named Albert Erickson made a file on Matti Roman and gave his birthdate as July 1850. But this person had other inaccuracies that I later found better info on. This file is is on the Mormon Family History Center as FHC microfilm #1033948, item 42. I have a copy of that file.

I tried on HisKi to bring up this same Matti, like you did, but I couldn't get it to show. What parish did you look in, and what parameters did you type in?

Suolijärvi I think might now be included in Suomussalmi parish, but was by itself in early times if I am correct.

This sounds pretty hopeful here if we can follow that lead that you just found and check out the parents and siblings.

Thanks again!

Hi Darrell
No wonder you did not find Matts Raappana in Puolanka because it looks like i messed up a little. I read the wrong line, Parents of Matts Raappana b.Feb 23 1850 is Jacob Hyttinen and Elsa Raappana and under that line was Lars Raappana and Lisa Wäisänen so i mixed the lines together. Sorry.
Itsure looks like Suolijärvi village is found both in Puolanka and Suomussalmi churchrecord for some reason. Have to check this out.

Hi Christer,

No problem at all, I do those same things too, genealogy is hard to do without making an error. I looked at some old messages from people in Finland about Suolijärvi. I guess in the mid 1800's there was a great land reform, possibly called "Isojoki"?? I might be wrong. Anyway Suolijärvi had some of it's parts taken away and put on tax lists with other villages. Some of Suolljärvi remained in Puolanka. Part was named Yli-Näljänka and Ala-Näljänka. These parts came to be in Suomusalmi. Yli-Näljänka is where the Seppäla 8 farm (in my previous message) is located that was split off and made into a Raappana 2 farm. Nearby was a Niva farm where a Kalle Moilanen b. 22.03.1859 family lived. He moved to the U.S. in 1879 and was a neighbor of Matti Roman in North Dakota. Don't know if they knew each other in Finland or if they emigrated together. Isaac and Matti came over in 1880 according to some records.

Hi Darrell
I went thru the churchrecords for Utajärvi,Paavola, Tyrnävä and Suomussalmi once again today and the only possible matches in these places are Matts b.13.2.1846, Isaac b.1856 Anders b.16.11.1859 children of Matts Raappana and Elsa Kanniainen.Emigration year for Matts and Isaac ( was called also Isto) could very well be ab 1880 as they appear for the last time in churcrecord 1880-1890 with note " admitted 1877" and " Amerikassa", in Amerika so they probably travelled together as you mentioned.Anders is still in Russia in churchrecord 1880-1890 and i could not find any note that he had returned to Finland.Matts was by the way married to Johanna Nestorsdotter Matero b.18.1.1846 and died 9.7.1896.
So the conclusion of this info is: Does not match very good with other sources you have about their births etc.but as we have seen many times before peoples age and birthdata changed pretty often for some reason when they emigrated to Amerika. However there is one more chance to check these people and that is the passport record for Oulu parish.Passportrecord contains such data as birthday, year and place where born, passportnumber and time.I dont know if anybody have done lookup for you in this record, if not i can order microfilm from Mikkeli archive as we did not have these in Vasa. You dont always find people you are looking for in these records but mostly anyway so i think we should give it a try.

Hi Christer,

Thanks once more for that search. I am grateful for all your effort. I haven't had any search done for me in the passport records of Oulu parish. So I would welcome that, and if there are any expenses I can reimburse you for, let me know. I am thinking too that the Raappana/Kanniainen family is the only ones that can fit. Most all of the birthdate variations occur in records found over here, and it is probably caused by illiteracy, and inability to speak English here etc. Censuses are also well known to have errors here. Sometimes a neighbor gives the information.

Isaac's naturalization paper states that Isaac was born "about" 1860 in Finland and is another variation. The paper also states that he landed in the port of New York on or about July of 1880. So if that is near accurate, his Finnish passport application must have been dated before that time. And it must have taken a few weeks to travel at that time from Finland.

If Anders (I had previously thought it was Isto) was in Russia, then maybe Anders was working to earn money to emigrate too. I wonder if Isto and Iikka are both the same as Isaac. I found a website once that said Iikka was, but I don't know much about Isto. Maybe it is a pet name for Isaac?

Well now we have found out where they don't come from, so we may only get as close as we are now.

Thanks again,
Darrell

Hi Darrell,
I have written to the webmaster of the Institute of Migration in regards to Iikka Rappanana's passport record. Hopefully, it can be corrected and we can find further information on it. When I click on it, another person's passport record comes up, not his... I'll let you know when I hear from the webmaster.

Hi Denise
This should be passport for Iikka Raappana when he had been back in Finland to arrange the wedding to his second wife Kreeta Pyykkö or this could be another person as well because if Iikka had been in Amerika from 1880,that makes it 19 years and in Finland just for a short visit i cant understand why he should need a finnish passport and why does it say Paavola as home parish if he was from Suomussalmi and visited Utajärvi. When i checked churchbook for Paavola i did not find a single person named Raappana.A lot of unanswered questions about this Raappana guy.Hopefully we can get some answers if i can find him in that 1880 passport record when he emigrated for the first time.

Hi Denise and Christer,

Thanks to you Denise and the webmaster for getting that passport information. Christer you have some interesting and valid questions I hadn't thought about. It makes me wonder if somehow this isn't a different Iikka Raappana that is traveling his first time to America. So far I haven't seen any records over here for a different Iikka or Isaac Raappana though. So it is puzzling. Hopefully a 1880 passport record can be found for him.

Hi Darrell,
I don't know how this would relate but the name on this may be a clue somehow. Could this maybe be a son of Iikka? grandson? Is Ike a variation of Iikka?

I saw this passenger record, and found it interesting. Hilma Raappana, on this record, states her father was Heikki Raappana, and she was from Paavola. Could the name Heikki, be really Iikka? Just guessing here!

Hi Denise,

Thanks for these items. Awhile back I looked on a Finnish names meanings list, and it gave Iikka as meaning Isaac. Heikki is the same as Henrik or Henry, so they are two different names. Ike I don't know yet what that name means. There are Raappana's around Longview, WA that may be remotely connected to mine, but a distant relation going back to Suomussalmi. There are others unrelated at this point that settled in Michigan, Minnesota and possibly South Dakota. I think they all originate in Rovaniemi, Finland and are unrelated. Apparently some Raappana's settled in Canada. These seem to be from Paavola.
I don't have an Ancestry subscription but am considering getting one.

Hi Denise,

I just found that Ike is a form of Isaac also, so this Ike might be a grandson of Iikka. Perhaps Iikka Raappana settled in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and had a son William, the father of Ike?

Hi Denise,

I was looking at Ancestry's website and found Isaac Rooman and Mattheus Rooman on the NY Passenger lists for 1820-1957. Arrival date is supposed to be July 1880 but could vary. My greatgrandfather Isaac used the Rooman spelling on early records I found on him. And later used Roman and then Rauma. He also used Isica, Isak, Isakki.. his brother used Matt, Matti, Mathias, and Mathew. Another brother used Antti or Andrew Rauma and arrived in NY about April of 1886.
I don't have access yet to Ancestry, and if you do, could you look up the data on these two Rooman names and post them please if you get a chance?
Thanks in advance,
Darrell

Hi Darrell,
The Isaac Rooman on Ancestry N.Y. Passenger Record's nationality is Hebrew, and the Mattheus Rooman is Dutch. I don't think they're your ancestors. Do you still want me to post them? :D

Hi Denise,

Thanks for that information and I saved it to check it later against a family tree that I received a few years back from a Raappana contact I found in that area. This might be a family that descends from a Kalle Raappana born in Suomussalmi that lived in Astoria, OR in the early 1900's. My greatgrandfather Andrew Rauma lived there and was a witness at the wedding of Kalle. I have a copy of that wedding document. A kind researcher in Astoria did a real nice search for me in Astoria and sent me a lot of information on Andrew Rauma.
Thanks, Darrell

Hi Denise,

I am looking at the possibility that my Raappana's were not necessarily born Raappana's or that they were not brothers. Maybe cousins instead. That could be why they are so hard to match up with birthdates. Around 1850 they had a great land reform and some farms were divided into smaller ones about the time my ancestors were born. So if for example Seppäla 8 was divided into a Seppanen and a Raappana 2 farm, my ancestors could have been born Seppänens and took the Raappana farm name later on.
Matti Raappana born in 1850 lived in Brocket, ND. A few years ago when the Institute of Migration was not under subscription, I saw that the destination of some Seppänen's was to ND. I have lost that record, and I wonder if you could look that up for me so I can see who they were and try to match them up with a Suomussalmi farm number. I don't know if they are listed under Seppanen or Seppänen. It seems to me these Seppanen's went to the same town or county as Matti Raappana lived.
Thanks if you can do that for me.

Darrell,
Have you checked this site? http://www.digiarkisto.org/sshy/
There are records of moving in and out for Matts Raappana on there from Suomuusalmi, as well as other Raappana's for the years 1853-1878. It might prove to be helpful.

Hi Denise,

Thanks for the website link. I will check it out as soon as I can. The Seppänen's you sent appear like they could be coming from the Raappana 2 farm. Brocket is the town where Matti Roman lived. I might have a link to follow, will take some time to study it more. A Påhl Seppänen married to a Eva Stina Juntunen had a son Carl (Kalle) and a son Anders that could be Andrew Rauma on HisKi. Andrew Rauma was a witness at a wedding for a Charles (Kalle) Raappana (1891 o 1892?) in Astoria, OR. Påhl and Eva Stina were living on the Suolijärvi 2 (Raappana 2) farm that was split off from Seppäla 8. The farm in 1857 became Näljänka 2 after the land reform. So this looks promising.
I have an interest in the SD Seppänen's that you mention, because Isaac and Matti both farmed near Frederick, SD in Brown County for 13 years. So I would appreciate getting that information too, if you could help with that.
Matti Roman died in 1908, so I don't know if Emma Seppänen went to Brocket in regard to that or not?
Thanks much,
Darrell

Thanks Denise for the link to the Digital Archives. I looked through them and have a question cause my Finnish is poor and I don't understand what the meaning is for "Seurakunnasta Muutaneiden Luettelo 1853-1880". On page 35, line 24 is Matts Mattson? Raappana b. 13.2.1846 in Suomussalmi. That line mentions Utajärvi. Did he go there in 1874 or is he coming from there? This appears to be the Matt Raappana born to Matt Raappana b. 1818 and Elsa Kanniainen. If it is and he is also Matti Roman, then this explains in part what connection Isak Rauma had with Utajärvi and how he found a wife from there in 1900.

I also checked again all the families of Suomussalmi for a Matt, Isak and Andrew, and the Matt Raappana b. 1818 is the only family that could match closely. I have a copy of a telegram in 1941 to a mortuary in Astoria saying that the children of Matti Roman could not attend Andrew Rauma's funeral. The telegram was sent by Matti's grandson and he indicates his relationship to Andrew Rauma was great uncle. That would make Matti and Andrew brothers. I also have a postcard sent by a daughter of Matti Roman to Isak's daughter Aina. It was signed "your cousin", so that makes Isak and Matti also brothers. So the only Suomussalmi family that can be the right one is the Matt Raappana b. 1818 one.

Thanks for any assistance on the translation.

Hi Darrell
That note about Matts Mattsson Raappana means that he moved from Suomussalmi to Utajärvi November 30 1874. I can check Utajärvi churchrecord today and see where he moved in Utajärvi.

Hi Darrell
Looks like Matts Raappana didnt move to Utajärvi at all,he does not appear in Utajärvi moving record for 1874-1875.The other thing that makes me sure hi didnt move is the fact that he appears in church record for Suomussalmi 1870-1880 living in Kerälä village and after that in Näljängä no 1 Hyttilä with wife Johanna Nestorsdotter Matero so he could impossible be in Utajärvi at the same time.
I looked at Matts parents at the same time and birthplace for Matts Israelsson Raappana b.June 30 1818 is Syrjävaara 24, Suolijärvi
Birthplace for Elsa Kanniainen b.Feb 5 1824 is Puolanga ( Puolanka).
Seems like we have no records older than 1850 for Suomussalmi and no records at all for Puolanga so you just have to look in Hiski and Digiarkisto for parents of Matts and Elsa.Parents of Matts Israel Raappana and Anna Seppänen appear on picture 172 page 173 year 1817-1823 in Digiarkisto.Says they were " medåbo",which means they were living with Matts Seppänen and Walborg Raappana.
I ordered the microfilms containing passportrecords for Oulu parish 1822-1922
today but wont get them until Jan 8 2008 so be patient.

Hi Christer,

Thanks very much for that nice information that you found. I am very pleased to get it. I am seeing that Johanna Matero went in March 1874 to Kajaani, so maybe Matt Raappana went there in November to find her and then they came back to the farms you mentioned and were married. Anyway it is nice to have that new information to add to my genealogy file.
I will wait to hear from you next month when you get time to view the microfilm. I appreciate your explanations of things, cause I would otherwise not know.
Darrell
