It was only when I received the Xmas greetings from this site that reminded me how long ago it was since I last looked into it.
I'm afraid my health hasn't been too good this year and also my husband has been in and out of hospital, so the weeks go by so quickly. I've now had my third operation for cancer and the last one took a lot out of me leaving me so tired. Anyway let's hope in 2008 I will have some more energy to continue my search for grandfather Frans Henric Rosman and how he travelled to London to set up a tailoring business and also where he is buried.
A good Xmas everybody and a happy new year.

Hello Sylviadoris,

I am pretty new here on the forum, just a few weeks now, but I just wanted to say hello. I am sorry to hear about what you have been through, I hope that you feel better soon and find out more about your grandfather in London. Wishing you a healthy and happy 2008,

Ayla

p.s. I live in London, although I am very new to research of this kind, if there is anything I can help you with then do please let me know.

Hallo, nice to hear from you.
Whereabouts in London do you live? I was born in north west London and lived there until I married.
My grandparents lived in Golders Green - also north west London.
If you find anyone with the name of Rosman when doing your research, then please let me know. My grandparents were also married in London. Rosman is not such a common name in England. In fact there are very few of them.

Hi Sylvia,

I'm from the other side of London ;))
Mind you, I was born in the East End and then when I was 5 we moved dowm to South London. I have been here now since that age, a long time. I live in between the Crystal Palace TV tower and Streatham.

Unfortunately I'm not doing any research here in London as all of my family are from Finland and Turkey but I will certainly keep my eyes peeled for this name. I am familiar with Rothman but as you say, Rosman is not that common a name at all, so it should be quite easy maybe to find some leads?
Have you been back to London to do any searches or is it all done on the internet? Do you know which cemetary he is buried in?

Again, I am new to all of this and I am learning day by day of all the places to look and search :))

Happy New Year to you!

Ayla

I've tried to attach the record, but this site won't let me. I'll see if I can send it in a zip file which will be smaller when compressed.

That's some good info there Denise! Do you pay monthly to ancestry.com? I had a brief look at it. I havent signed up and paid for any sites like this as I am in the beginning stages of my own research but I'm wondering if I need to do something like this too? The thing is that I notice that Finland isnt in the list and most of my searching is in Finland. Is this something that I should do or wait a bit and see what else I can find without it?
(sorry, reading this question back it makes me sound like such a newbie......which is pretty much what I am! :D )

Many thanks Denise, I'm sure that Sylvia will get a lot of info out from that.

Hi Ayla,
Ancestry.com doesn't have a specific search for information from Finland, but you can find Finns on passenger records, etc. and in many cases by adding the keyword Finland or Finnish. I've been a subscriber since it started, probably about 8 years or more, and it has proven to be very useful to me...but I find that it is expensive to have total access to all the records, about $300.00 annually. I guess I look at it as a form of entertainment or my hobby. My suggestion would be to keep checking the site as it offers 14 days free sometimes and then sign up for free, and see if they have what you're looking for. They add new records off and on, so I'm hooked. But, I've found that this site, The Finlander Forum, to be the best site for help with Finnish genealogy. I try to help as often as I can (I own my own business and work 7 days a week) but you can always private message me or post here, and I'll try to help with Ancestry's records.

Happy New Year! :D
Denise

P.S. I'm still a "newbie" too! With all the helpful Finns on this site, I've learned alot, and everyday I find out something I never knew before. That's the only way we'll learn. Every country has their own records and unless you actually live there or are familiar with what records are available, you need help. I'm never ashamed that I need help, and I'll be the first to admit it. And not reading or speaking Finnish has been a challenge. :o Even my own mother and her sister's giggle at me with my pronunciation of Finnish words!

Ayla
28-12-07, 04:26
Thanks Denise, yep, my mum laughs at my Finnish pronunciation too. But some of the words are soooo long and what with all the and y and t 's together, it's a nightmare to read :D

I'm doing ok so far without paying for any subscription, you are right, everyone here is so helpful and kind. Although I suspect I will need to use some program or other to keep my records in as I am snowed under with reams and reams of paper now and I am only about 1 month into doing active research!

Thanks ever so for your offer of help. Happy New Year to you too. Speak soon,

Ayla

Hi Ayla,
I have two huge file cabinets full of paperwork, along with a couple coffin sized rubber totes, and I finally started putting everything into Brother's Keeper (genealogy program), which was very kindly introduced to me by Hasse Andtbacka when he sent me a huge gedcom of my great-grandmother's second husband's ancestry. He even wrote instructions on how to use it! I had no clue what a gedcom was! and to be truthful, I still have questions! :D But now, as soon as I receive new information, I run home as fast as I can, and fight for my computer time to enter the information. My poor husband doesn't have a chance to play his army games he's so fond of, or online backgammon! I also hog the computer at work, and make him wait on our customers when I'm onto something! But, he is very understanding, and for about a week, I let him search for his family ancestry and he got hooked too! It is an addiction!

Take care,
Happy Holidays,
Denise

P.S. Don't hesitate to ask for help!

Ayla
28-12-07, 19:03
:D Your message made me laugh! I have a husband who likes to play games too, he loves his poker, so it is like a fight for the computer these days :)))
I cant afford to get another one just yet but that would solve a lot of problems. You know what it is like, you just come across some fascinating information and then he comes and wants to play because there is a tournament or something! :D
June also told me about gedcom, this is something I must look into more in 2008. At the moment I am trying to locate my living relatives. Bit by bit we will get there eh!
(It is going to take years though isnt it!)
 :)

Denise
29-12-07, 04:48
Hi Ayla,
I also forgot to mention that my husband likes to play solitaire on the computer... :p that one I just don't understand... I'm about ready to toss him a deck of playing cards :D I feel my computer time is either learning something new about my ancestry or I am helping others, which I love! I don't see hubby's gameplaying as worthwhile; more like a waste of time! I think he is looking over my shoulder waiting to use the computer!

Best Regards,
Denise

Ayla
29-12-07, 20:54
OMG that is so funny! I agree, give him a deck of cards quick!
I wonder your hubby and mine are related! A lot of similarities there :)
It is nearly 7pm now here in London and my hubby has been reminding me every second almost that his tournament is starting soon and I need to get off here!

Apologies Sylvia, we have gone off on a tangent here! Let us know how you get on with your search.

Happy New Year again!
