PLease can someone tell me, on the passenger lists, where it says 'Friend's Name', does this mean the friend travelled with the person named on the list or does it mean something else? A bit confused here in London.

Do you have an example? Usually what it means is the name of the person he's going to, be it a relative or friend. Karen

Hi Karen

Thanks, I was searching for Elli Jokinen born 17.02.1914 and Im getting s frustrated because I can only find her in the 1920, 1930 census and on the passenger lists as a passenger herself. But then she came under an entry for someone called Evert Bolmquist who travelled 6th Nov 1940 and under Friend's name was Elli Jokinen.

So I was wondering what this meant.

Thanks for your help!

Ayla,
I had to go ahead 3 pages to find the second page of that manifest. Evert Blomquist arrived from Petsamo, Finland 6 Nov 1940, age 30, single, on "Mathilda Thorden" to NY. He was going to friend Elli Jokinen. Says destination S Porcupine, Ontario, Canada. I attached both pages. Too bad our 1940 Census isn't available yet. Karen

Thank you so much Karen. So Elli was still in the States in 1940 then if he was going to her. MMMMM.

Any idea when the 1940 census will be online? Also, on ancestry.com, as I cant find Elli's marriage there, is it because it may not be online yet for her state or year whatever?

I believe the 1940 census won't be on line for quite a few more years. I did find on the SSDI by just putting in her date of birth and first name...
Elli Pajari born 17 Feb 1914 died 14 Sep 2000. Last res listed as 964 Helsinki (US Consulate) born Mass. So if this is your Elli, she married someone named Pajari. Who knows where or when. Karen

Hi Ayla,
The 1940 US Federal Census won't be released until April 1, 2012. :( In the meantime keep yourself busy with other ancestors! :)

2012? :( ohhhhhhh.

Of course I have lots to keep me occupied, it's just that I am a bit obsessed with finding Elli because I have her photo. All my life I have been wondering about this pretty cousin of my mum's. If only I had started my search earlier, I may have found her before she died. Hey ho!

I have emailed USCerts, not sure if they can help me with a marriage certificate. I'm also writing to the parishes in Helsinki to see if anyone can tell me if she was buried there and where. It's like detective work isn't it! :D

Hi Ayla,
Couldn't decide where to post this on Jokinen's but here is what I found. Also there is a Hilma Pitkanen travelling with them. Unsure, thought maybe this was your Judith Jokinen.

Hey Ayla,
Also there is a Viktor Jokinen and spouse in 1928 records too. Just type in Jokinen under immigration on Ancestry with the year 1928 "exact search", and you will see Viktor's on there. They were going to Maynard, Massachusetts.

Denise :)

P.S. It is 2 pages total, so make sure you look at the second page.

Hi Ayla,
Yes my Fräki family is from that area of Alatornio. MK means travelling companions travelling on the same ticket. And no Jokinen's or Pitkanen's! Only an Olaf "Pitka" Kallunki b. 1667 in Kemijärvi. :D

Thank you so much Denise, I'm going to print off all I have of the Jokinens now. I am confused. Let's see what comes up with the death records and cemetary/newspaper just in case we get a definate lead. I need to sit and look at the dates and try to work out which family is the right one.
Where are you Elli? What happened to you at age 16 after your parents died?
:( I keep looking at her pretty photos willing them to give me an answer.
(Hubby says Im obsessed, or is it obssessed, whatever! He knows I have been asking questions about her for about 20 years!)
I have just got to find her!

Ayla & Co

Kemi is in the north near the current Swedish border. But - Kymi is a different place in Finland. Kymi or in Swedish Kymmene was a parish which today is part of the city of Kotka.

Some data of the old parish can be seen in the Finnish language Wikipedia (http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kymi). Among other things one can there see the list of the villages belonging to Kymi parish: Eskola, Helilä, Huruksela, Jäppilä, Kaarniemi, Kalliokoski, Kaukola, Kierikkala, Korkeakoski, Kurittula, Kuutsalo, Laajakoski, Lankila, Marinkylä, Metsäkylä, Mussalo, Parikka, Pernoo, Pihkoo, Ruonala, Saksala, Sunila, Sutela, Tavastila, Ylänummi.
