I am looking for any information on my great grandfather. He was born in Finland on January 9, 1883. Where in Finland or who his parents were I have no idea! He married my great grandmother Hilda Nesman. He lived most of his life in San Francisco, CA where he was a long standing member of the Star of Finland organization in San Francisco. He died in San Francisco on July 5, 1962. They had a son together, my grandfather Nestor Edward Johnson. Nestor passed away February 4, 1959.
I really don't know where to begin since I have such few details on Johannes and Hilda. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I am not even sure if our last name is really Johnson. I came across some court papers referring to Johannes and Johnannes Johanson also know as Johnson.

It's possible your Hilda Nesman's name was Näsman. That name is found in many parishes in Finland, but the majority were in Solf. HisKi records for Solf didn't extend to cover the 1880s. I tried to look in Hiski for Johan Edward, b. 1883, but found no one. Johansson/Johnson could be his patronymic name. I didn't find a marriage between him and Hilda on HisKi. They possibly married in the US. Do you know when and where they married? That might give a clue to our researchers as to when they emigrated - someone might be able to find them in the Institute of Migration records.

Hi Michelle,
This might be your great grandmother, Hilda Näsman. There are a couple other Matilda/Hilda's on the Institute of Migration, but this one going to San Francisco seems like the most logical one to start with. June was correct that the surname was Näsman. :)

Best Regards,
Denise

Hi Michelle and Denise

Attached the Ellis Island passengerrecord for Mathilda Näsman. She was going to her cousin Mathilda Burman in Eureka ,CA.This means that she must be the Mathilda i found in Kvevlax, Koskö village, born November 13 1887.I will check this thing on Tuesday at the archive and also look for original passportrecord, might be her DOB data in that.
Looked a little for Johannes Edward too in churchrecord around Vasa but didnt find him, perhaps i can find him too in passportrecord, seems like he emigrated in 1905 too.

Hi Michelle
Mathilda Näsman from Koskö ,Kvevlax is definately the right one, she is also mentioned in a book by K.G.Olin that describe swedish finnish people living in California, from the book" Mathilda Nassman born Nov 13 1887 in Koskö,married to Johnson in Eureka, died Dec 12 1968,member of the Runeberg lodge".SFHS/ LS.LOoks like someone LS at SFHS have given this information. who is LS?
A note about Johannes Johnson too," born Jan 1 1883 died July5 1962, mothers maiden name Mattson."No info about Johannes birthplace.
Do you think these people are what you are looking for.

The SFHS membership directory shows there are a handful of members with the initials LS. Perhaps if you contact K-G Olin, his records would reveal who submitted the information to him. K-G is a member, but he may not have read this query. His e-mail address can be found on the Internet: olin*multi.fi

Christer I think this may be her. I was always under the impression that Mathilda had passed away prior to my dad being born (1947). Maybe Johannes and Mathilda parted ways and that was the discussion. Johannes did re-marry to Naomi?? I will have to find the marriage certificate. That has to be her though! Eureka makes sense because that is where my grandfather was born. Gosh If any other information can be found that would be amazing.

Thank you all so much! I am so grateful.

P.S. What is that lodge? Johannes was a president for many years with the Star of Finland in San Francisco.

Thanks again everyone and god bless! Looking forward to talking to you all soon! Michelle Johnson

First off, Denise he did have a brother named Nestor Johnson. My grandfather (also Nestor Johnson) was named after him. I went back to decided to review some old letters and came across a refernce to this. That is amazing!
Next, I found some information written to us from our step-great grandmother, Johannes's second wife (after Mathilda). I am not sure of the accuracy but I thought it might be worthwhile to bring it forward. Some of it doesn't quite make sense, but here you go!
She said that Johannes was born on a farm near Helsinki, Finland, not far from the Russian border and just a few miles from the Gulf of Finland. She explained that Johannes would often see Russians patroling the border. It was also noted that his mother had abandoned him when he was 5 years old to come to the United States. She said that he was in a foster home and they were good to him but he still wanted to go to the United States. He contacted an uncle who live in Washington State and the uncle sent him money for his trip. Not sure how exact or factual all this may be but I guess it is more information to review! Thanks again everyone! Michelle Johnson:o

Hi Michelle
It doesnt make real sense,Helsinki is not near the Russian border but there is a swedish speaking area east of Helsinki so that makes sense.Would just need name of birthplace for Johannes then we will find him.Checked the passport records for Vasa today and found Mathilda Näsman, Octobr 12 1905
so its right one i found in Koskö, Kvevlax.I will take a closer look in Kvevlax church record for her parents next week.Keep searching for info about Johannes meanwhile.

Christer,
Well I thought part of this information to be odd and untrue so I didn't include it in my earlier comments. In a letter is said that he spoke Sweedish and went to a sweedish school, so maybe it is the eastern part. There is a postcard (blank) of St. Birgitta (not sure of spelling). Where is that located at? Michelle J

Hi Michelle,
I've been searching through passenger records on Ancestry and the Institute of Migration for Johannes. None are a perfect match if we go by his birthyear of 1883 and on the census he stated that he immigrated in 1905. Check them out and see if any seem right to you.
The attachments are from Ancestry, and this one below is from the Institute of Migration.

Using the "all" button on Hiski, I searched Johannes Johansson and 1883 and came up with 2 entries born 9.1.1883, there were several others, but they had middle names different than Edward.
9.1.1883 Alahärmä, Wuoskoski village, Johan Kultalahti and Wilhelmina Mattsdotter, Johan
9.1.1883 Viipuri-Viborgs, Ahokas village, Juhana Eliaksenpoika Kaitanen and Anna Reijo, Juhana
Couldn't find any Johannes Edward or Edvard.

This doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't born elsewhere on that date, just that the records aren't available.

I have one possible match for Johannes: Johannes Edvard Johansson b.Jan 9 1883 in Oravais,Jeppo , seems like he moved to Nykarleby and the church in Nykarleby is St Birgittas church.Looks promising but lets see what the naturalization papers will give us first.

Hi Michelle
Thanks for the postcard, this is definately St Birgitta church in Nykarleby,i have been in this church many times because my wife Marlene's mother is born in Nykarleby and she have a lot relatives in Nykarleby and we also have a summerhouse there.Nykarleby is located 45 miles north of Korsholm where i live.So this means that the Johannes Edward Johansson that i found must be the right one.I will have to go to the archive during the weekend and dig a little more in the churchrecord and other sources for him.Cant get this thing out of my mind before im sure.
I have more good news for you, Mathilda Näsman is mentioned in Vasabladet newspaper 1952, this is Christmas greetings from people in Finland to relatives in USA and Tilda Johnson 436 W Russ st Eureka gets greetings from From Alvina and Gustav Sund in Sweden in column 4 on page 2

In column 7 page 2 Signe and Hjördis Sundell, Mrs Tilda Johnson 436W Russs st Eureka , family Harald JOhnson 210 40 ave San Mateo family Nestor Johnson 68 Liebig st San Fransisco get greetings from relatives in Koskö, Kvevlax. Text is in Swedish but im sure you find the names.

Hi Michelle
I found your Johannes Edward. His full name was Johannes Edvard Johansson Kärr born Jan 9 1883 in Forsby, Nykarleby. Forsby is a little village just outside the Nykarleby city. His father Johan Eriksson Kärr b.June 21 1859 emigrated to Amerika in 1886 and his wife Brita Lovisa Mattsdotter nee Yrjäs and Johannes emigrated March 1 1890 . Johan and Lovisa had 3 more children that died between 1885-1889. Lovisa and Johannes Edvard lived on Yrjäs farm no 4 in Nykarleby before they emigrated so its possible that they used surname Yrjäs.So these people must be found in US census and perhaps they got more children in US, i dont know but Denise can take a look at this part.
Attached some info about Johannes parents and greatparents.I hope this matches the info in Johannes Edwards naturalization record when you get that.

Hi Michelle and Christer,
What bothers me is the fact that I have not been able to find a passenger record for Johan or Brita anywhere. I've tried every combination possible with no results that come even close. It's odd...maybe they never left Finland?

Hi Michelle and Denise
If Johannes Edward had a brother Nestor he must be born after 1890 and in USA because Johannes Edwards brother Emil Wilhelm died in !886 and his sister Maria Lovisa died in 1885 and sister Ida Maria died in 1889. No more children born in Finland. But where to find birthdate for Nestor? Looks like Johan and Brita Lovisa are hard to find in US census too.
Christer

Denise
18-02-08, 21:25
Hi Christer,
That's what I'm now thinking too. The Nestor I found says he was born in 1886 on the records I found. So... He probably isn't a brother to Johannes.
This is a bit confusing on this end not finding passenger records for Brita and Johan. I can't imagine what other names they would have used, and I tried everything! Including just the year of immigration only for a search and scrolling through all the names that came up. No matches or anything close!

Hi Michelle and Denise
Looks like you were right Denise, i found the Kärr family in Communiun book 1890-1900 still living at Yrjäs farm no 9 in Forsby and now notes for Johan and Brita Lisa "moved to page 298" unfortunately the churchrecord end at 1900 so i could not follow up this. Johannes Edvard moved to Munsala 1898 at age of 15 ???. There is a passportrecord for a Johannes Edvard Ruthas from Munsala born 1883.Passport is issued 1900 and says that Johannes is a foster child.Ruthas farm in Munsala was the place Johannes Edvards mother Brita Lisa came from, i have a feeling that here is a connection but have to check this later on.

Here is the passport and passenger record from the Institute of Migration. Also, on the same date of 31.03.1900 were a few more Ruthas' that may be travelling with Johannes Edvard. I'll post those passenger records next along with their passports if available.

Good job, Christer! :D

I remember seeing something about Ruthas in a letter and I could not figure out what it meant. Johannes was a foster child. I was told that his mother left him to go to the United States. Wow everyone! I never thought in a million years I would have received so much information.

So I do have a couple of queations beacuse I don't really understand some things. So what would the family's last name be? Karr? And why did they use the farm names when they came to the United States, rather than using their last names? Thanks all! Michelle Johnson

Hi Michelle
I can understand that these name changes are confusing but this is how it was in Finland in the 1800 and early 1900. Families that moved around a lot between different farms could have a lot of different surnames during their lifetime.Looks like Johannes had atleast 3 different surnames, Kärr after his father,Ruthas after his fosterparents and Johnson in USA and perhaps Yrjäs when they lived at Yrjäs farm.Dont know if his parents changed name after they moved away from Yrjäs farm around 1898 too.Did you get it ?

Hi,
On the passenger record that Karen found for Johannes E. Ruthas he states that passage was paid by his uncle, and going to his uncle's, August Eriksson. The passenger records I previously sent from the Institute of Migration on Kajsa Sofia Eriksdotter show she must be related and August Erickson must be her brother.

Hi Michelle
I guess you want to know more about your ancestors so i will dig a little more in the archive about Johannes Edwards ancestors and also look if i can find his uncle August Erickson and aunt Kajsa Sofia.Might take some time to get this info so have patience.I just wondered why they sent Johannes to Munsala, he was their only child so it cant have been easy to do that.

Hi Christer,
I keep looking at the August Eriksson Kärr b. 1872.03.29 that you've posted, and wondering if I don't have the correct August Erickson in the 1900 census that I am assuming was Johannes Edvard's uncle in Oregon. But, that was the only one I found that was Finnish!

Best Regards,
Denise

Hi Michelle and Denise
Looks like i have to take another look in the churchrecord for Johannes uncle etc. i hope he emigrated before 1900 because churchrecord ends at 1900 because of the 100 year rule.
I will be in the archive on Sunday morning so will see what i can find.

Hi Michelle and Denise
I think i have the final confirm that we have the right Johannes Edvard now.
Johannes Edvard moved to Vexala, Munsala to his uncle Erik Mattsson Rutas b. March 27 1848 ,who lived on Rutas farm , thats why he changed his surname Svartnäs into Rutas.Erik was the brother of Brita Lisa Yrjäs. Erik Mattsson was married to Greta Lisa Eriksdotter Holm born April 30 1849 and was Eriks second wife.Looks like they didnt have any own children and they had one other adopted son too, his name was Erik Johan Erik Johansson Holm so he must been a relative of his foster mother Greta . Erik Johan emigrated to New Zeeland about the same time as Johannes emigrated to Amerilka, churchbook says march 24 1900 for Johannes.Johannes used surname Yrjäs when he moved to Vexala.
This Rutas farm no 12 was a military camp at that time and Erik Mattsson
was a renter of part of the farm.
The uncle that paid for Johannes Edvards ticket to Amerika must have been August Eriksson Kärr b.March 29 1872 brother Johannes Edvard's father Johan Eriksson Kärr,according to churchbook he emigrated to Amerika in 1889. There is in census 1910 in Clatsop ,Oregon one lodger August Ericson from Finland immigration year 1889.Perhaps this is the one. There is another uncle of Johannes Edvard that emigrated to Amerika too, Johannes August Svartnäs or Yrjäs born. September 20 1878, brother of Johannes Edvard 's mother Brita Lisa,he emigrated sometimes between 1890-1900.So there you got some more job.
I added some more ancestors of Johannes Edvard and did some changes into the document i sent you before, there is still more to research about these families but always a start anyway.I will take a look at the cemetery in Nykarleby when we visit my wifes granmas grave later on this spring, perhaps i can find the graves of Johannes parents. These old graves are not photographed at HISKI so you wont find them on internet.
There was a lot of name changes in these familys so you might get confused again ,feel free to ask if you dont understand what i wrote.

Hi Michelle
I was digging a little in Mathildas familytree yesterday and found out very interesting things. For example i found out that you are related to my wife, Marlene is her name, the line goes back to early 1800 but anyway and i found atleast two lines of your ancestors that goes into my family tree, dont know yet if this make us relatives but very close anyway. And i found out that Mathilda had an uncle that emigrated to Michigan. His name was Anders Näsman born Jan 31 1861 and died July 2 1907 in Vermontville ,MI, his wife Anna Maria seams to have moved to Nashville,Michigan. They had 1 girl and 6 boys so im sure you have relatives in the UP.Will be back with more details about Mathildas family tree as soon as i get it done.Looks like my friends in Oregon found the obituary for August Erickson too it says that he was survived by a nephew Ed Johnson in California , that has to be your Johannes Edvard Johnson.

Hi Christer,

Saw your posting regarding the Näsman surname here in Michigan and have some information for you. I went to school with Anders (Andrew) Näsman's granddaughter. This is what she told me:

Andrew Näsman born Jan. 15, 1861, died July 7, 1907. He was married to Mary Vaggren, born January 15, 1861, died December 2, 1947. (She "thinks" those birthdates are correct.)

Her grandmother had several sisters. Some settled in Michigan and at least one in Minnesota.

Mary's father lived on a farm outside of Vermontville and Nashville, MI, which is about 15-20 miles from where I live here in Lansing.

Andrew and Mary had one daughter (first child), then seven sons.

Mary is not aware of any relatives in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

I neglected to get the name of Mary's parents, but I see or talk to her quite often so I will follow through on that.

Hi Karen and Michelle
If you like to look at ancestors and descendants of Anders and Mary Näsman
go to this website www.vilppula.com/surnames.htm# go to surname index and type in Näsman Anders and you will get his ancestors and descendants.
Matilda and Ed are also found here but Ed is named Gust for some reason.A lot of Näsman relatives in this database. I followed Matilda Näsman back to 1485. This is the database a refered to in the previous mail when a wrote "Släkten Kuni".
