According to a death certificate from St Louis County, Minnesota, a Matt Fogde died there on March 14, 1914. Although his year of birth was marked 1868 and his birthplace Toby (Tuovila), this person might well be my great grandfather, Matts (Mathias) Mattsson Fogde, who was born on April 7, 1865, in Malax, and bought the Holm homestead in Norra Helsingby, the neigboring village to Toby. The death certificate says that his last known place of residence was Brookston, Minnesota. According to the death certificate he was a widower although at the time being his wife was still very much alive back in Finland.

Anyone out there with any info on people who lived in Brookston, Minnesota? My great grandfather might also have used the name Matt Matts(s)on. There is also an interesting name in the US Federal Censuses 1910-1930 on a certain Mathias Fogde (also spelled Vogde or Fagdr). Could someone, please, check this person?

Hello Stig,
Here is a Matt Fogde in the 1910 Census in Virginia. I'll see what else I can find. This one appears to be married with an 8 year old child. What year did your Matt immigrate?

Best Regards,
Denise

Hi Stig,
There appear to be 2 Matt Fogde's on the Institute of Migration. The census I just sent was I believe for the one born in 1870.

First of all, thanks for checking up on the Fogdes, Denise!

For the past month I've been wondering about the Fogde in Richmond, Virginia, not a very common place for Finns or Finnish Swedes to settle down. So the ancestors of this Fogde were from Russia, which excludes him as my great grandfather - unless he lied about his origin, of course...

The first of the Fogdes on the passport and passenger lists, i.e. the one from Mustasaari who emigrated in 1896, is identical with my great grandfather. Somehow I'm inclined to belive - for the time being - that the Matt Fogde mentioned in the death certificate of 1914 from St. Louis County, MN, actually was my great grandfather. I know that the date and place of birth do not match exactly, but they are both fairly close, though. Now I'd really like to get to know people with relatives or acquaintances in that area, i.e. Brookston, MN. Rumor has it that he remarried while still being married...

Hi Stig,
This appears to be Matts Passenger Record. From the Institute of Migration there was also a Selma living in Illinois. Is she related to your Matts?

Hi, Denise

My Fogdes were originally from the Styris homestead in Övermalax so in my family, the name Fogde does not date back further than the 1830s, when Johan Mattsson Styris, the second son of the owner of the Styris homestead became a crofter on the Fogde homestead. We are actually a minority among the Fogdes and unrelated to most other Fogdes, although most of all Fogdes come from Malax. To my knowledge, the Selma you mentioned is not a relative.

Matts (Mathias) had two brothers, Johannes and Wilhelm (William), who went to Calumet, MI, to join Matts, and they worked there for some time, but both returned to Finland. William bought a farm in Söderfjärden in Solf (Sulva) and had nine children. Johannes died as a bachelor in Helsinki. I have the passport and passenger data on all of the brothers. Thanks again!

Hi Stig,
Would this be the death record you are referring to? Do you actually have a copy of the death record from Minnesota?

Hi Stig,
This is one that possibly could be your Matt. Using soundex I'm trying to get close to what the surname Fogde would sound like here in the US when pronounced.

Hi Denise,

Yes, I actually ordered a copy of the death certificate from the Minnesota Historical Society and got it a couple of days ago. It's not impossible that the boarder living in Mesaba is identical with my great grandfather. I'm used to seeing a wide variety of spellings of my last name, the funniest being Mr Suhde (relation, PR etc.) when I worked for the Am. Embassy in Helsinki back in the late seventies. So why not Taiga or Laiga? If I were to pronounce the name Fogde it would probably sound something like Foog-day to the ears of a native English speaker.

Matti Taiga was married while the Matti Fogde in the death certificate was a widower. The interesting question in the latter case is where they got this information from? Back in Finland, his wife was still alive at that time.

Someone said I should try to find out whether the Finnish general consulate made any inquiries about possible relatives.

Just me, Stig
