Does anyone know if the present Lutheran church in Kemijärvi, built in the 1950's, is on the same site as the old church, or if the old church still stands? My great-grandmother was buried in the churchyard in 1923. I would like to visit the cemetery when I'm in Finland next month. I've tried to contact the pastor in Kemijärvi, but never received a reply. Karen

Trying to pick some facts from this site (http://www.kemijarvi.seurakunta.net/?sid=11).

During the Lapland War German troops put the church in fire when they left[1944]. The pastor Heikki Rosma could save the altarpiece (shown in the link) and some other valuables. He served the congregation until 1975.
The present church was built in 1949-1950 with the aid from American Lutheran churches and was taken to use in Midsummer 1951.
