We are looking into my husband's Swede-Finn part of his family. His great-great grandfather was Matti Höglund born 7 April 1842 in Nykarleby.

We were in Nykarleby in 2006 and went to the church to look at their records. We believe we found the right Matti, but I would love more confirmation that we are following the correct lines. When we went to Nykarleby we only had Matti's name and his birthdate and information from the parish he had died in (Jääski) that he had been born in Uusikaarlepyy. We had no luck when looking through the Höglund family but when we used just his birthdate we found a fit. I feel like he was born in Forsby, Drakabacka in Nykarleby to Elias Jeremiassn Kourujärvi and Maria Johansdr Broända. If this is correct then Elias and his family moved from Kokkola to Nykarleby a few years before the last of their children were born and Matti was one of those children born in Nykarleby.

We believe his father was Elias Jeremiassn Kourujärvi who was born 13 Sep 1801 in Korplax, Kourujärvi, in the Kokkola countryside. Nabbala is Elias's mother's family name.

If the above is correct, then Matti's mother was Maria Johansdr Broända who was born 22 April 1802 in Storby, Broända, Kokkola countryside. Besides the Broända name, I think Maria's mother was a Lidsle.

One of the big reasons I think we are following the right families is that I was told there was a note in the communion book in Nykarleby that said Matti moved to Helsinki and changed his name to Höglund. Our Matti went to school in Helsinki, married probably either in Helsinki or Espoo, moved a lot through Karelia - having children in many different parishes in that area, then settled in Jääski where he died in 1917. Matti was a master brick mason.

Does anyone here have any information regarding these families and can you confirm I'm following the right family? I have a quite a bit of information on Matti's children.

Thank you!

If you have the right parents, I found another son born to Elias and Maria in Nykarleby before Matti. 8.9.1835 Forsby Drakabacka Elias Jeremiass:n and Maja Johansdtr 33 Anders
Also found a second marriage for Elias.
14.12.1864 Nykarleby Drakabacka widower Elias Jeremiasson and Maja Greta Kristoffersdotter of Naars farm.

Right on, Karen! I have Elias and Maria's families in my data and sent the data to Marilyn. We found that Elias and Maria moved from Karleby to Forsby where they had about 5 more children - and he took the name Drakabacka. I also discovered that Elias Jeremiasson had a daughter Anna Brita who was the great grandmother of Vincent Erickson, SFHS member! Maria died in 1857 and Elias then remarried to Maja Greta. Vincent is curious about where Drakabacka was located because his family has been associated with that area for a long time. That's why I posted the query about maps. It's been an interesting search.
(Anna Brita was Elias' daughter - not sister).

Thank you Kalle, Karen and especially June.

I was looking for confirmation that Matti Höglund was in fact part of this family. I was at Finnfest this past week and was helped in the genealogy room where they found that the Kourujärvi family was in the Talko database. The problem was that my Matti Höglund was not one of children listed. In 2006 we took photos of pages of the communion books in Nykarleby where we found Matti a son of Elias Drakabacka. The dates of the older kids and Elias fit that they had originally come from Karleby and went by the name of Kourujärvi - but again we just wanted someone to confirm it. I think that with June's help I can be pretty certain that I am following the right families back in time. It sounds like someone has done a lot of research on these families.

For so long we have not known anything about his family, it is good that we now can trust that we have his ancestors. I have photos of Matti Höglund and his wife Maria Lagergrén. The family moved around a lot with Matti being a brick mason. Their children were born in Impilahti, Tohmajärvi, Joensuu, Sortavala and Jääski....it has been hard following them around! The family settled in Jääski in the mid 1880's and the couple lived there till they died.

Thanks again for everyone's help. I need to get this all sorted out now!
Thanks!
Marilyn

Hello: Here's some more info I found i believe shows your family. Jeremia's birth 18.4.1777 to Abraham Hindriksson and Brita Jakobsdotter ? 3 children born to Jeremias and Brita Eliasdotter including your Elias on 13.9.1801.
The marriages of Jeremias Kourujerfvi and Brita Eliasdotter Nabbala 10.5.1801 and of Elias Jeremiasson Kourujärvi and Maria Johansdotter Broända 8.2.1828
And I think the death of Jeremias Abrahamsson Kourujärvi in 1840, at 66 years 6 months and 23 days of age.

Hi Kalle,

Thank you very much for the information off of Hiski. I will be spending part of the day tomorrow making some additions to my husband's family tree. Thanks again.

When I get more time I hope to do like I did with the families from Isokyrö and go to the LDS history center and get microfilm on the area. That helped me connect the right families, follow the family members that moved and find the married daughters!

Thanks again for all the help!
Marilyn
