Karl XI founded Karlskrona to be the new center for the Swedish Navy. Since Blekinge Province was scarcely populated it was difficult to enlist a sufficient number of sailors to man the warships. The solution was a forced relocation from other parts of the country. Thus in the 1680's 1350 sailors (Båtsmän) from the Ostrobothinian coastal region (Pedersöre, Jakobstad, Sideby, etc.) and their families were forcibly relocated to Blekinge. Does anybody know if there today is a tradition among these "emigrant" Swede Finns to commemorate their heritage?
