My Dad's Dad is a Ross and on every Census it shows he immigrated from Finland too, with his wife Sophia. Yet finding a Ross name From Finland has been proving hard. Did he change or shorten his name, my dad remembers he was Grampa Gustav? Middle name perhaps? Everything else on the Censuses fit.

There was a William Ross from Scotland who settled in Vasa in the 1600s and became a merchant there. The Rossi name can be found in several parishes in HisKi.

You seem to be saying that your grandfather, b. ca 1872, was either Anders Gustav Ross or Gustav Anders Ross married to Sophia. Andrew is an Anglicized version of Anders; I've never seen the name Andrew used in Finland at that time period.

Hi Sunflower
When you study 1910 and 1920 census for Andrew Ross you notice that Andrew was naturalized in 1896 and Sophia in 1897 so you should order these naturalization records from Lansing,Mi, thats where Karen Douglas live so i think she have the address. There are naturalization indexes on internet too but not for Gogebic. These papers usually give a lot of useful information about birthplace, parents names birthdate etc. When i look at the 1910 census it seems to me that the surname could be Roos wich is a pretty common surname in swedish speaking area of Finland.1900 census was hard to read but i think it said Oct 1872 for Andrew.

I've stumbled upon a "maybe...could it really be?" On Ancestry.com A cencus from 1900 that my relative Otto Loo is on. 3rd & 4th lines down is a Gustave & Sophie (head & wife) from Russia-Finland with dates close. They are listed above August Ross (head) and Mary (wife) Russia-Finn.

The thing is the above 2 people have the last name Erikson from Sweden.

It's a very scribbley census, but has anyone come across possible "typos" like this before?

I too was thinking of the Anders name.. hmmm

There is a marriage record in Ironwood for an Anders Ross on 17 Sept. 1904. He was born in Finland in 1878, but his wife's name is listed as Matilda Maki born in Finland in 1879.

It appears that in the 1900 Census Andrew and Sophia Ross are living in the Aurora Location in the Township of Ironwood, in the City of Ironwood, Gogebic County. It shows Andrew is a miner came to America in 1891 and was born in Finland Oct. 1871. Sophia is born in Finland Oct. 1866. It has on the next page daughter Maria born in Michigan Feb. 1898 and her younger sister Sophia A. Ross born Oct. 1899.
We have a Mary Ross married to Isaac Panula on November 16, 1917 in Ironwood Michigan. The record gives her mother as Sofia Hietala and her father as Andrew Ross.
Did not find a marriage record for Andrew and Sophia. Possibly married across the border in Hurley?

Sophia Heitala. Thanks for finding her name. Everything else is correct that you listed. I believe they were married in Finland not in the States. They immigrated in 1891 as husband/wife in a 1900 Ironwood, Mi. Census.
