Friends,

I'm asking for a little help tracking down my Finnish lineage. Below is most everything I know. If you can add anything PLEASE let me know!! Thanks in advance. :)

Both of my father’s parents are of Finnish descent. My father’s father, S. Arthur Hill, was the son of Samuel Hill. However, my great grandfather, Samuel Hill, changed his surname from Lampiolathi (not sure of the spelling) to Hill when he arrived in America from Finland in 1889. I have not been able to find any information on Samuel Lampiolathi (perhaps it is because I do not have the name spelled correctly?). Samuel was born in 1868, somewhere in Finland. Samuel married a woman named Maria (Mary) Riiski, also from Finland, in 1895. I am at a dead-end with Maria too. Samual and Maria lived in Virginia, Minnesota until their deaths.

I’ve had a little more luck on my grandmother’s side of the family. My grandma’s name was Lillian Lempi Castren. Her father was Jakob Hemming Castren, who was married to a woman named Josephine (I do not have any further information on Josephine. She died a few years after my grandma was born). Jakob was the son of David Hirvela Castren & Maria Myllyn. They were married in 1862. Jakob was born in Oulainen, Finland in 1864.

David was born in Ylivieska, Finland in 1840. David’s father’s name was Emanuel Niemi Kolehmainen Kangasniemi Hirvela. I am not sure why his name was so long. Emanuel was born in 1799 also in Ylivieska, Finland. Emanuel married Marija Liise Prut in 1824 and they had a total of 10 children (including David). Emanuel’s father’s name was Perttu Niemi Kolehmainen Kangasniemi. Emanuel’s mother’s name was Susanna Koskela. I believe Emanuel was an only child. I am at a complete dead-end with all of the Castren/Hirvela/Kangasniemi wives.

David Castren changed his surname from Hirvela to Castren. I believe this change occurred when he entered the Finnish military (he was a minister in the Finnish army). Also regarding David Castren; my father and grandma have told me that David Castren was of some importance to the Finnish communities in MI and MN so I did do a "google" search for "David Castren" and I did get some hits. Unfortunately, most of the sites are written in Finnish and I cannot read it.

Both sets of g-parents moved to Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range. However, David Castren did go to Calumet, Michigan for a few years before heading to Virginia, Minnesota. I believe he started a school in Calument but have nothing to backup this claim. I know that he helped build the Finnish Church in Virginia, MN and was the minister of the church until his death.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I am particularly looking for information on the Castren family, the Lampiolathi family (or the correct spelling of Lampiolathi), or in particular any of the above mentioned wives. I have found census information from Virginia/Eveleth, Minnesota but there’s not much info there.

Thank you so much!!

Thanks Christina! I don't think that's him, as the dates are not right. However, the spelling you have of the surname could be correct. Also, I did not know the proper spelling for Samuel in Finnish - so thanks for that too!

Not sure if this would be any help, but there is a Lamppulahti near Haapajärvi.

You can click on this link and then click on the + sign next to the map to make it into a true sky view image.

Two clicks on the + sign should do it.

There are also people with the surname Lamppulahti from Kankaanpää.

Here's some info on David and Maria Castren in MN.
David Castren 1840, died 15 Nov 1919 in St Louis county, MN. MN Death Index 014199-1919-287952.
Maria Myllyn Castren 1839 Pielisjärvi-died 20 Sep 1917 in St Louis county, MN
I found them in the 1895-1900-1905-1910 census records.
There are more than 20 Castren names on the MN Death Index in several counties, primarily in Wadena and St Louis.
I found mention of a David Castren who served as minister in the Virginia Apostolic Luthern Church. Virginia is in St Louis county, MN.
You'll note that in 1900, Maria says she had 6 children, 6 living.

Cheryl,
I found Jacob Castren in the 1905 MN Census on the page before David. Actually, the name above David's on the one I already posted is his child. The image for Jacob is bad, the right side dark and unreadable. I also found him in 1910. They have his wife as Kate.
Copies of the death records for David, Mary, Jacob and a Sofia Castren are available at www.ironrangeresearchcenter.org for a fee.
I also found a passport issued to Jacob in 1888 in Red Jacket, Houghton, MI.
Also found the family in 1880 in Calumet, MI. Wrongly identified as Castro.

Cheryl,
There's a very limited family tree on Ancestry for Jacob. It does say he was married twice. First wife Josephine, second wife Catherine (Kate) Moilanen. I found a marriage record for them in Calumet in 1902. Strangely, it says he was not previously married, which isn't correct. Josephine must have died right after the birth of a child I found in 1901 in Calumet. The images are from MI Births and Marriages on Family search pilot. Also found on MNGenWeb, births for a Lillian Lempi Castren 08/01/1898 and a Helmi Jeannette Castren 05/05/1899. No parents given. I found Ferdinand Castren's WWI Draft Card and a death for a Ferdinand H Castren 1940 in Pinellas, FL.
So the children found on the 1910 census must all be Josephine's. The family tree on Ancestry has Minnie as Mayme Esther and Lula as Lola.

This is when Susanna was born. As you can see the last name is spelled with a C instead of K and these are her parents. Hiski is very easy to use and very reliable. I love doing this research and I love helping, it is so much fun. Please dont hesitate to ask if you need anything that I might be able to help with. I am still new at doing genealogy myself but I love it. I was once accused of stealing others research when I first started and it made me feel quite bad. So I am willing to help whenever possible.

Rachel - you're awesome! You are ALL awesome!

I do not know what Hiski is. I'll try searching for it. If you find anything on Lampiolahti or Lamppulahti or Lapiolahti please let me know (first name Samuel), he came to America around 1889. So far, I have not been able to find anything on him. It's as though he dropped out of space and landed in Virginia, Minnesota.

Thanks again!!!

There are many others on the MN Births in St Louis county 1859-1900. Emil Arthur 24 Jan 1899, Mamie Esther 15 Jul 1897 or Mamie Marie 1 Jun 1896 seem to fitThere are 3 possible dates of death for a Samuel Hill in St Louis county, 5/2/1947, 8/18/1947 or 12/29/1948.

From what I can tell, Sam and Mary had at least 12 children. Sons: William, Arthur, Jalmar, Hugo, Theodore and Arnold. Daughters: Mamie, Minnie, Mirja (Myra), Martha, Mildred (Millie) and Marguerite (Margaret). From the various census. I got a clear image of the 1905 MN State Census. So your Sam probably has many decendants still living.

I´m starting to feel like a salesman of books.
These two are really great if one has interests
of the Hourula families in Pyhäjoki and Nivala
or any family in Alavieska in the 1700:s.

Hi Cheryl,

I didn't see your post from last year until yesterday, but it sounds like we're distant relatives.

Jacob (Jakob) Castren is my great-grandfather on my father's side. I believe he had five children -- Ferdinand (my grandfather), born in 1893, twins Oscar and William (born in 1895), May (birthdate unknown) and your great-grandmother, Lillian (I don't have a birthday or death record for her either).

An interesting side note -- I have the same middle name as Jacob (Hemming) ... it was passed down to my grandfather and my dad as well (first-born male tradition). Since I have two girls, the middle name was passed on to my brother's son.

Anyway, I have put together a 2-3 page history of what I know about David (as well as a little about his wife and Jacob). If you're interested in that, you can ping me offline (bcastren*comcast.net). Maybe we can trade some other family information as well.

Hi Cheryl,
I'm new to the site. It sounds like we are related! My great great grandmother was Mayme Castren, who was Lillian Lempi Castren's sister. I've gotten a lot of information about the Castren family, and I'd love to share with you or anyone else in the family. Please send a message to me if you're interested.

Hi sskal,

Yes, we sure are related! I remember May from my childhood. I used to call her “Auntie May” when I was a kid. One of May’s daughters, Alice, babysat my oldest son when he was a baby for a week when my hubby and I took a vacation. Alice came down and stayed with us. Are you a Toleen?

I also have lots of info on the Castren family. My dad did lots of family research. Maybe we can share what we have.

Hi sskal --

My grandfather, Ferdinand Castren, was Mayme's oldest brother. I, too, have lots of Castren family history and have also corresponded with Cheryl. I'd like to be in contact with you as well to share information.

You can contact me via email at bcastren*comcast.net

I look forward to hearing from you.
