Norden Newspaper, dated Oct. 22, has an interesting article by Mika Roinila concerning data about Finland's Swedes in America. He found an interesting website housed at the Minnesota Population Center at the Univ. of Minnesota. Interested individuals have free access to the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS). Homepage: http://www.ipums.org/

There are several databases available, but the most interesting is IPUMS-USA. This database draws on every surviving US census from 1850 to 2000, except for the 1890 census which was destroyed by fire, as well as the American Community Survey of 2000-2007. For the first time it is possible to obtain data on the number of Finland-Swedes in the US from 1910-2000. Unfortunately the census did not ask about the mother tongue or language in the 1950 and 1970 census years.

The table at the website: http://usa.ipums.org/usa/ shows the total number of Finland-Swedes (born in Finland with Swedish mother tongue/language) in the US, along with the proportion of Finland-Swedes among the total Finland born population of the country for each census year.
