Hello,

I'm looking for any information to confirm birth dates and also to determine the parents of Gustaa Isak Keränen and also of his wife Liisa Kaisa.

HisKi does not have the dates needed in order to determine the parentage of Gustaa or Liisa Kaisa.

I'm interested in information from Finland, not so much for the United States at the moment, but if anyone has access to the 1910 and 1920 Censuses of the USA, I'd be interested in what they show as well, particularly with respect to additional children.

The most likely US records will be in Becker County, Minnesota or a county close by.

From the Institute of Migration, I have the following:

Many years ago when I visited a cousin in New Mexico, we went to meet her childhood friend, named Keranen (don't remember her first name), who was married to an Indian who was a chief or ranked high in his tribe. She was an artist and exhibited her work in Taos, I think. She and my cousin grew up in Virginia, MN, and Keranen's father was involved in education - maybe head of a college? Wish I could find my notes from that trip.

I remember her name was Hella Keranen, artist. She was the daughter of Peter Keranen, pastor of Savo Lutheran Church, Frederick, ND, who confirmed her in 1923. I found this about her, but don't know anything about her parents, so maybe they are a different Keranen family than yours. She was an interesting person to know, and when I wanted to photograph some pueblos around Albuquerque, she talked to the Indians and got permission from them.

Hella Keranen Broeske Shattuck arrived in Santa Fe on the back of a motorcycle during her honeymoon in 1934. The child of Finnish immigrants from South Dakota, she became a trained concert pianist. Armed with some art training in Minneapolis and Portland, Oregon, she also studied with Santa Fe painter Odon Hullenkremer (1888-1978) and quickly became involved in the Santa Fe art scene. Following her 1946 divorce she lived all over New Mexico and became fascinated with Hispanic and American Indian life, particularly ceremonials and fiestas. Shattuck became "artist in residence" at Isleta and Laguna pueblos by 1949. She later moved to Taos for a time and later Albuquerque where she died.

Hi June,

It doesn't sound like the same Keränen family.

These people were Apostolic Lutheran and farmers.

I have a potential note regarding Gustaa's Mother's maiden name: possibly Sorvari. At least, I think the note is referring to her as being Gustaa's mother.

Here is your family in MN in 1910 and 1920. Also Gustaf's WWI Draft Card and their arrival to US in 1904. Kaisa Liisa Keranen died 25 Apr 1937 in Wadena county, MN. I'll keep looking.

From FFHA, most of the Keränen were found in Oulu, Muhos and Suomussalmi. I found 8 pages of Keränen in Oulu in the Rippi that goes to 1900. There are several private Family Trees on Ancestry. They have Gustaf born in Muhos and Kaisa Liisa in Oulu. They have Martha Birgitta Keränen born 7 Sep 1900 and died Jun 1979 in CA. Married to a Chester Arthur Hunt. Says married 1932 in Grand Forks, ND. John married Esther Koskela, Mary married Harry Lewis, Henry married Hilda Hillukka, Charles married Elsie Nieminen and Jennie/Jenny married Walter Jacob Kinnunen.

Karen,

Thanks a million.

Now if I can go in the opposite direction and get some information on the Finland side of this story, that will be very interesting.

Hopefully, someone with access to the church books in the parishes of Oulu will be able to look for me.

Karen, is there a way to send a "request for more information" to any of the private family tree folks that have posted information at ancestry.com?

Thanks again!
:D

Karen,

Would you clarify for me one thing?

Are the children giving mmn as Sorvari or is it referring back to Gustaa?

Or maybe I read that incorrectly? These names are siblings of Gustaa?

Also, those other family trees, do they list any parents for Gustaa or Liisa Kaisa?

They are referring to the maiden name of the mother of the children, Kaisa Liisa or Liisa Kaisa. I joined FFHA and have been looking for the birth record of Gustaa. I looked both in Oulu and Muhos, but there's no record found in Muhos and Oulu doesn't have those years in births. As I said, I found 8 pages in the Rippi for families named Keränen in Oulu. If you want I will email them to your private email. I can leave a message for the owners of the Family Trees on Ancestry if you send me your email address. None of the Trees has parents for Gustaa or Liisa.

I sent messages to the two Family Trees on Ancestry to contact me if they are willing to share info.

Thanks Karen!

I will PM you my e-mail address, drop me a note so I can have you in my address book.

I am getting some response at Suku as well, for Liisa-Kaisa's line.

As some of the data shows some out of wedlock siblings for some of the lines it seems I'm getting some info via PM there.

I'll attempt to cross post any non-sensitive info here that I get there - after the dust settles a bit.

Merry Christmas!

Hi,

I thought I'd give a brief update and a very large THANKS to Karen.

Because of Karen, there is now a mini telephone family reunion going on with the cousins from Gustaf and his sibling.

Thanks again!
