Hi all,
I've done quite a bit of research on my side and come to find out, my husband's side has one of his Grandmother's who is Finnish. His family does not know much about their history at all so I'm asking for help, please. These last names seem to be so common and so much time has passed that this will be a bit of a challenge.

Known - His Grandmother is Gertrude Luoma born in the US on 19 Nov. 1914, d. 5 Mar. 1991 to her parents from Finland -
Dad - Hermann Arvid Luoma or Heiniluoma from unknown Finland, b/d. unknown
Mom - Saima Frederika Honkinen/Heikinen unknown spelling- from possibly Laitila. Saima was born 21 Aug. 1891 somewhere in Finland and died in May 1982 in Alabama.

Stories are that once upon a time, Herman Arvid went to work in a logging camp in the Pacific NW and Saima was passed off as his son or brother so that she could also live in the camp. She worked as the camp's cook. Apparently there was quite an age difference between the two. The family is not confident where else they lived but perhaps Illinois. There is a mention of a Nestor, but nobody knows how he fits in.

I would appreciate any thoughts.
Happy New Year - just a bit early!
Lori Pawlik
ps. I think it would be really interesting if my old relatives and my husband's lived near each other in Finland!

Hi Lori,
Found these on the Institute of Migration. Thought maybe they would be a start at finding other information. Unsure if any are the correct ones.

Happy New Year!
Denise

Heiniluoma appears as a farm name in Ullava, as well as in Teuva.
In Teuva there's eg. Herman Henriksson Heiniluoma b. 10 Sep 1828, who married on 28 Dec 1849. Herman was a popular male name in Teuva, but not in Ullava. HisKi doesn't go far enough for you.
On the other hand Teuva is available at FFHA (http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/index_eng.htm) (SSHY) site, and includes late 1800's church books of Teuva, but the latest are for members only.

I found an arrival to Boston in 1910 for a Saima Häkkinen from Rantatöysä, Alavus, father Juho Häkkinen. She's going to Chicago. But looking at her corresponding info on Migration Institute, her full name was Saima Eufemia Häkkinen. She's on line 11.
From the SSDI, the dates you gave for Gertrude Luoma belong to a Gertrude L Yager. Is that correct.
As Jaska says, most of the Heiniluoma names are found in Teuva. I will check FFHA to see if I find anything.

Here is the Heiniluoma farm in 1880. Note a Herman born 1861? on the farm with his brother, patronymic Hermansson. Possibly sons of the one married 1849. I will check further. Unfortunately, the Herman born 13 Feb 1861 was Herman Emanuel. Born to Herman Henriksson Heiniluoma and Greta Lisa Henriksdotter.

If you type Heiniluoma in the first box and Teuva in the second box, you can choose between views of two farms with this name:

http://kansalaisen.karttapaikka.fi/kartanhaku/paikannimihaku.html

If it comes up in Finnish, you can go to the bottom of the page to find English.

Also, it is fun to play with the aerial view and maps too.

On a site called "Find A Grave", I found images of the gravestones for Saima Luoma and Gertrude L Yager in Coffee county, Alabama.
Also found Herman Arvid Heiniluoma in the WWII Draft Reg. Born 10 Feb 1878 in Teuva. Wife Saima. I missed it before.
I found Herman Arvid's birth 10 Feb 1878 in the Teuva births on FFHA. At first glance it looks like Aron, but if you look closely it could be just bad handwriting.

Strangely, on this Rippi image, the Herman Aron here has the same DOB and parents.

I found a Nestor Luoma on the West coast in Aberdeen, WA in the 1930 census. You mentioned a Nestor. There's another daughter on the next page, Laura L 17.Nestor maybe a brother or cousin??? You mentioned that Herman may have worked in a lumber camp out West. Lots of logging in WA at that time.

Hi Ilmari,
Thank you for the map. So, to me it looks like the Teuva area is about 125km from the Nykarleby area? I see that Finne, Terjarv is just a little bit further east. But both farms were generally in the same Ostrobothnia area of the country- is that correct?

Would you happen to know if the cultures in the two areas were different? I know that my Great-Grandparents were Swedish-Finn and Lutheran. They spoke Swedish. It looks like Eugene's (my husband) family was also Lutheran, but is that more the Finnish area of the country? Please forgive my lack of knowledge, but I'm trying to get better educated!

Happy New Year,
Lori

Thank you, Jaska, for the link! Those old writings are a bit hard to read and I need to study what it all means exactly. It looks like a census report and I'll be studying!

Lutheran is the state religion of Finland - you can read about it here: http://wapedia.mobi/en/Religion_in_Finland Finns and Swedish-speaking Finns were Lutherans. Terjärv is the Swedish spelling - Teerijärvi is the Finnish spelling. At one time Terjärv (late 1800s) was considered a Swedish-speaking parish. I don't know the situation today, but I do have Swedish-speaking relatives living there.

Well, Terjärv belongs to the larger Kronoby parish, even though it is much closer to Kaustinen. The services at Terjärv [and of course Kronoby] are Swedish. The services at Kaustinen are Finnish.

I know that the parishes have merged in recent years. But my data was entered long ago when parishes were separate and I'm keeping my data showing Terjärvi, Kronoby, Karleby, etc. as they were originally.

This is the only sensible method that leads reader to the correct records of the time. Same applies as well to the older times when parishes were split. Thus I may have children born to the same family at the same farm with e.g. some born in Pedersöre (until April 1736), some in Esse (after May 1736).

Hi,
Gene and I studied the lists and one of the people Denise lists is:
Hanni Saima Red Lodge MT USA 06.08.1904
Although this doesn't match exactly, we have also seen a Herman Heiniluoma at Ellis Island also going to Red Lodge to meet his uncle Gabriel Luoma.

It might be a longshot, but does anyone have access to see the immigration record of Saima Hanni? If her birthdate is Aug. 1891, it could be her!

Thank you for the religious background too - it helps! I have people from Esse too so that was interesting.
Have a great day,
Lori

ps. Also, googled around and found that someone has listed the children from the Heiniluoma farm from the FFHA book with slightly different spellings on the LDS site. I cannot see access to the submitter and there are not any leads. But, Maria Aurora Henricksson Heiniluoma is listed as Maria Aurora Heikintytar Heiniluoma. This leads me to think that either someone who is Finnish made the submission or this family was perhaps Finnish-speaking - just unknown. There is a listing for a husband to Maria Aurora - but no other spouses - and of course, I need her brother Herman. I would also like to search if someone out there has posted a Finnish name family tree so I will follow that up too.

Do you know Matti Kujala who lives in Finland, but he was born in Red Lodge and has data about many people who lived in Red Lodge. You could contact him at: Matti Kujala <RMkujala*kolumbus.fi>

I was thinking how confusing it would be to someone just starting genealogy who wasn't familiar with the old parish names. Anyone looking at my data would never be able to find those old parishes on a current map of Finland. It would be nice if records could carry an annotation indicating the old parish names of Karleby and Terjärv are now part of Kronoby, for example. Or if there was a chart that would list the new parishes and indicate which old parishes were merged into the new. I haven't seen any new maps of Finland and wonder if they indicate the boundaries of old parishes.
