I have a request for help, but not much information to work with. Her great grandmother was Anna Lovisa Forsman, b. 13 Mar 1862, somewhere in Finland. Her father's name could have been Anders Forsman, a sea captain, and he had many children. Those known are:
-Viktor who went to Duluth
-Henrik, in Finland
-Anna Lovisa, b. 13 Mar 1862, went to America 1892. Worked as housekeeper for the Rosenthal family in Tawas or Oscoda, MI. Met and married Paul Schaaf (Shaaf) from Germany. They lived in Wilber, MI for a while and then moved to Tawas. Had 5 surviving children, among them Willard and Helma who married Fred Muslof.

I have searched Hiski for Anna Lovisa, b. 1862, but couldn't find her. Couldn't find her in Ellis Island records. Could she have been born on her father's ship? Could she have arrived at Canada or Boston?

In Hiski births, Jakobstad: Gustav Forsman and Sofia had a son Henrik Gustav b. 2 Apr 1894 in Oscoda, MI. Could Gustav be related to Anna Lovisa? And if his son Henrik was born in MI why is there an entry in Jakobstad church records for him? I looked for a marriage record for Gustaf Forsman and Sofia in Jakobstad and Pedersöre, but didn't find one. Could this couple have gone to Michigan and had a son born there, and stayed there?

A lot of questions but no answers. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Hello June,
I don't know if this would help at all, but on ancestry.com there is a board with the last name Forsman. Here is the link: http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.forsman/mb.ashx

The name Forsman is very popular in MN and around Duluth, MN.
I also found this online and thought I would share.

I sent some info to June directly as I kept getting locked out earlier.
I found the marriage record for Paul and Anna on MI Marriages 1868-1925 on Family Search Pilot. Names misspelled as Paul Schoof 23 abt 1870 Germany and Anna L Fossman 26 abt 1867 Sweden on 19 Oct 1893 Oscoda, Iosco, MI. Groom's parents Fred Schoof and Augusta Bushman. Brides parents Charles Fossman, no mother's name.
Also found the birth of Augusta Schaaf 19 Nov 1898 in Wilber township, Iosco, MI.
1900 Census gives Paul's birth as Apr 1872 and Louisa's as Jan 1869, Lena Apr 1895, Selma Aug 1896, Elma May 1900. Sys married 7 yrs, 5 chilren, 4 living. Gives Louisa's place of birth as Germany, but parents as Sweden. So there are lots of differences between info.
Photo from a Tree on Ancestry of Anna Louise Forsman Schaaf. They don't seem to have too much info on Anna. Says she came to US in 1869 at age 7. Came to Oscoda in 1892.
Children from that tree Lena, Selma Louise 1895-1982,Elma 1897-1905, Augusta 1899, Hilma 1901 and Marie 1904. The 1910 census also has Richard.

Some new info.Anna L, Paul and Richard Schaaf are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, East Tawas.
From the Huron Shores Genealogical Society, the death record of Richard pg 33B and Helma Schaaf marriage record available for a fee 1922 pg 13.
From MI Marriages
John E Westcott 25 1891 MI and Lena P Schaaf 22 1894 MI married 1 Nov 1916 in Wilber, Iosco, MI. Parents, George Westcott and Sarah K Delworth, Paul Schaaf and Anna L Fossman. Note second time mother's last name spelled Fossman.
John Edward Westcott born 24 Aug 1891, MI Births 1867-1902.
1930 Census Tawas City
John E Westcott 38, Anna P 37 says father Germany, mother Sweden
Frederick 12, Grace 11, Ardette Allene 8, George W 4 7/12, Catherine L 2 1/12

Lena has been found as Lena, Anna and Leana.
So far no census found that says Anna Lovisa was born in Finland. Usually says Sweden.

Thanks, Karen. I'll pass the info. along. Kris is a bit overwhelmed with what I've sent so far - said she has to take time to digest it.

Sure is a puzzle about Anna Lovisa's birth place. Nothing shows up in Finland - maybe in Sweden? If Victor Forsman, b. 1874, died 1947 in WA was her brother, I found his birth record in Pedersöre to Matts Johansson Forsman and Anna Kaisa Jonasdotter Gästgivars. But they didn't have a daughter Anna Lovisa. Kris said that Anna Lovisa had 16 brothers but the only known names were Victor and Henrik.

Victor Forsman born 2 or 3 Dec 1874, died 10 Nov 1964 in St Louis county, MN.
Ida Forsman died 19 Feb 1950 in St Louis county, MN
In 1920 the family was in Rice Lake, St Louis. Victor, Ida and daughter Elsie.
In 1930, same place, Victor 55, Ida 59, Elsie 27 and Harold 9. Listed as son, but maybe Elsie's? Says Elsie born Finland.
Harold Alfred Forsman born 3 Jul 1922 in St Louis county, died 8 Mar 1999 Duluth. On MN Birth Index, mmn as Gustafson. So if he is Ida's, he was born when she was 41, possible.
Attached, Westcott Schaaf marriage.

I was looking for information on a relative yesterday and came across the name Anna Lovisa married to Johan Alfred Takala who were wittnesses to the christening of Juho Fredrik on July 10th 1881 in Hollola Finland. Preacher ws J.J. Snellman. Don't know if this is same person, but thought I would pass it on.

My search for the origins of Anna Lovisa Forsman has come to a brick wall. So I'll try another approach. One of Anna Louisa's daughters received a postcard from Jakobstad in 1913. Written in Swedish (not Finnish), the salutation was I believe "Cousin" Lena (Anna Louisa's eldest daughter) from Emilia Forsman of Jakobstad.

Is there any way to find an Emilia Forsman in Jakobstad in 1913? I have searched online, but came up with no one.

Hello again June, Karen, Goldie and all for your assistance back in January

Since then, I've been sorting through various sources in my efforts to trace the roots of my ggm Anna Lovisa Forsman Schaaf (13 March 1862?-Feb 1939) without too much luck.

I took up the strategy of trying to track other Forsmans in the Iosco County MI area around 1880-1905 using the fabulous website of the Huron Shores Genealogical Society and St. Louis county, MN. After 1900, there are few local records of any Forsmans in the area. In her obit, two brothers were named as surviving Anna L. Here's what I've found:

One brother, was Victor Forsman (1874-1964?) of Duluth. The first record I found was the 1910 US Census, listing him with a wife, Ida or Aida and daughter Elsie (Karen was correct about this). Elsie was born around 1903. The 1920 Census indicates a US arrival in 1903. My guess is that Victor may have returned to Finland, married and brought his family to the States. Ida's maiden name was Jacobson; her father's name was Jacob Gustafson Bjorn (from her death record).

Other side notes about Victor is that there was a rural RR station and creek names after a Victor Forsman living in the area circa 1920. It also appears that he may have been a leader in the local temperance movement.

Anna L's other surviving brother, Henry Forsman, resided in Finland at the time of her death. In 1893 at Oscoda, a Henry G. Forsman, 24 (father Simon Anders Forsman; mother Bertha Matts) married Gerta or Gusta S(ophia). Forsonnay, 36, (father Daniel Anderson; mother Bertha Hendricks). The following year there is a record of the birth of their son Henry or Henrik Gustav Forsman . It appears in Hiski as well. After this, I've been unable to find further trace of the family in the US and suspect they may have returned to Finland.

Anna's father was reportedly a sea captain with a large family who traveled with him on his voyages. Because she grew up on board ship and traveled, Anna was "educated" and conversant to some degree in more than one language. She was also a very religious Lutheran.

If any one has any further suggestions for research, I would welcome them. In the meantime I'm still digging through the correspondence of Anna L's daughter (my grandmother) and that of my mother.

Thanks again for your help.

Kris

I'm still trying to find the roots of my ggm Anna Lovisa Forsman Schaaf (13 March 1862?-Feb 1939).

I've been concentrating on tracing my ggm's two known brothers and have found records in the Hiski database.

Ida's maiden name was Jakobsdotter or Jacobson; her father's name was Jacob Gustafson Bjorn (from her death record). Here’s the Hiski record for the marriage.

These Hiski records tie the family to the Jacobstad area. Any suggestions for further research on trying to find other family records in this part of Finland?

My thanks for any advice.

Tapio,

Thanks so much. You've broken down a tremendous brick wall. These records seem to fit in with what records I've found on this side of the Pond.

So much to sort through.

Kris, glad to help You.

I hope You will have a great adventure in the parish of Pedersöre.

Hiski is a great tool, but soon we will have the original church records from Pedersöre digitalized here:
http://digi.narc.fi/digi/puu.ka

Then every hiski record can be checked from the originals.

I know this is an old query and may have been resolved by now. But I know someone in East Tawas, MI who knew about the Paul and Anna Schaaf family and sent me the following about their children:
- Daughter Helma married a Muslof; they had a daughter Marjorie?
- Daughter Lena married a Wescott and they lived in Tawas City. Their daughter Susan married LeRoy Pitla; they live in Wilber.
- Daughter Marie married Russel Anderson; live on E. State St. in E. Tawas and had a son LeRoy and two daughters.
- Daughter Selma married Fred Thompson; they lived in Wilber and had these children:
- Joy, Dorothy, Anna, Edna, Mike = all deceased; plus daughter Doris who lives in Oscoda, MI. She is the only one remaining in that family.

Kris, Since your last posting in August 2010, I've been contacted by one of your Forsman relatives who just came across your comments ... he wants to contact you. Can you please get in touch with me here on the Forum and I'll give you more details.

Thanks.
