Obituary of my father's uncle, Wayne "Ben" Fräki's wife, Martha. She would have been 99 years old in May.

LAURIUM - Martha E. Fraki, 98, a resident of Laurium, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2010, at Portage Pointe in Hancock where she was a resident for the past two years.

Martha was born May 9, 1911, in Tapiola, a daughter of the late Frederick and Ida Savela and was a graduate of Houghton High School.

On May 29, 1932, she was married to Wayne "Ben" Fraki. They had been married for 57 years when Ben passed away in September of 1989. Early on, they were co-owners of Quality Foods and then in 1973, they became the owners of Fraki Markets in Calumet, L'Anse and Ontonagon.

Martha was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Laurium.

All who knew her remember Martha as a very kind and giving person who worked to help her family, her church and her community. Whether she was sewing for church projects or cooking for fundraisers, creating beautiful needlework to decorate the homes of friends and family, driving elderly friends to the store, or caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Martha was tireless in her efforts. She had a particular talent for finding the best berry patches and using those berries in her jams and bakery. Her grandchildren fondly remember days spent making nisu in her kitchen.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Ben; son, James Fraki; daughter, Mary Beaudoin; brothers, Werner and Walfred; sisters, Esther Storhok, Mildred Gauthier, Sigrid Kolehmainen, Vera Savela and Lila Heikkinen; and two sons-in-law, John Bennetts and Jim Frankovich.

Surviving Martha are two daughters, Ruth Frankovich of Laurium and Carol Bennetts of Calumet; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services were held in the Erickson Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet with Rev. James Fundum officiating.

Friends and family will be invited to attend a memorial service at the Lake View Cemetery in the spring.

Friends may leave condolences for the family at ericksoncrowley.com.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 146 Tamarack St., Laurium, MI 49913 or to the Portage Pointe Enhancement Fund at 500 Campus Drive, Hancock, MI 49930.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Portage Pointe for the loving care they gave to Martha over the past two years. They helped ensure that her last years were filled with warmth and laughter.

So sad,
