The Royal families are a part of Sweden's history. The wedding of Crown Princess Victoria to Mr. Daniel Westling is to be held Saturday, June 19.
The wedding takes place at Storkyrkan (Stockholm Cathedral) in Gamla Stan (Old Town). This old cathedral is being extensively renovated to its original state of splendor. All fresco ceiling paintings have been cleaned, all sculptures repaired, all metal fittings shined.

The wedding parade proceeds by horse-drawn gold-and-blue carriage through the streets of Stockholm, with mounted riders in front and back in 1700s uniforms.

As Stockholm is built on islands surrounded by waterways, the newlywed couple will then board the Royal Barge 'Vasaorden' for a short journey through Stockholm Bay en route to the palace. This old ceremonial craft, dating from 1774 and 17.5 meters long, has neither sail nor engine. It has nine pairs of oarlocks and will be ROWED by 18 sailors of the Swedish Navy. This should be a most extraordinary sight! The 'Vasaorden' has been entirely refinished for this wedding. At its stern is a regally decorated cabin with windows all around.

H.R.H. Victoria Ingrid Alice Désirée, born in 1977, is in line to inherit the Swedish throne from her father, H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf, born in 1946. In the future, she will become Sweden's first female Head of State from the Bernadotte dynasty which began with the reign of King Karl XIV Johan (Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, born 1763). Victoria has two younger siblings, Prince Carl Philip born 1979, and Princess Madeleine born 1982. Sweden has had a monarchy for over 1,000 years.

The wedding ceremony will start at 3 p.m., June 19, Sweden time. Sweden is 6 hours ahead of the east coast of USA.

Thanks to Syrene. I've been in the Storkyrkan in Stockholm - it has a magnificent wooden sculpture of St. George and the Dragon. And there's also the statue of them in Gamla Stan.
