Paul George Hummasti, Professor of History at Missouri State University, passed away Wednesday August, 18. He was born May 4, 1945, in Astoria, Oregon. He is survived by his wife, Terttu; his four daughters Satu, Maari, Sarah, and Laura; his grandson, Thelius Paul; his two brothers, Arnorld and Neil; his sons-in-law, Mark and Michael; and all of his relatives and friends, especially in Astoria, Helsinki, and Springfield.

A memorial service will be held this Saturday, August 21 at 11:00am, at Christ Episcopal Church. He will be buried in Astoria, Oregon.

Professor, 65
Paul George Hummasti of Springfield, Mo., formerly of Svensen, died from cancer Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010 in Springfield.

He was born in Astoria May 4, 1945 to Paul and Irma Konttas Hummasti. They preceded him in death.

He grew up in Svensen and graduated as valedictorian from Knappa High School. He received an undergraduate degree in history from Reed College in Portland and master's and PhD degrees from the University of Oregon. He also studied for a year in Finland on a Fulbright Scholarship.

On Sept. 23, 1972, he married Terttu Tukiainen in Jyväskylä, Finland. She survives.

As a professor, Mr. Hummasti taught history at the University of Oregon, California State University at Chico, the University of California at San Diego, Texas Tech, and most recently, at Missouri State University in Springfield. He also taught as a guest professor at the University of Tampere in Finland and at Imperial College in London.

He was well known for his research on Finnish immigration and socialism. He published a book, "Finnish Radicals In Astoria, Oregon, 1904-1940: A Study In Immigrant Socialism," as well as numerous articles in various publications. He was also co-creator of the films "Remembering Uniontown" and "Steam Whistle Logging," which are available at the Clatsop County Historical Society.

Among many other interests, he enjoyed reading, traveling and playing strategic board games.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Satu Hummasti of Salt Lake City, Maari and Laura Hummasti of Santa Monica, Calif., and Sarah Hummasti of Boston; a grandson, Thelius "Theo" Fouxnan-Hummasti; two brothers, Arnold Hummasti of Bellingham, Wash., and Neil Hummasti of Astoria; two sons-in-law, Mark Fouxnan and Michael Sweeney; and two cousins, Wallace and Matthew Hummasti.

He was preceded in death by his twin sister Mary Beth Hummasti.

A graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28th at the Svensen Pioneer Cemetery in Svensen.
