Note: Melba was married to an Åland Islands descendant, so her children are also Åland Islander descendants. My own cousins are a part of her husband's family.

2/8/1918 ~ 8/21/2010

Melba Thogerson was born on February 8, 1918 in Moro, Oregon. Her family moved to Hockinson, Washington for her senior year, and she graduated from Battle Ground High School in 1936.

In 1937 Melba married John Erick Mattson, her friend and sweetheart who grew up on the neighboring dairy farm. John was hired to be a Portland Fire Fighter, so they set up their home in Portland. They always had great fun with their friends and family and were always ready to lend a helpful hand.
Melba provided loving care for John during the 25 years he was disabled. Her determination, love, and quick wit were an inspiration to us all.

Melba passed away peacefully on August 21, 2010. She is survived by her three children: Bonna Smith (married to Michael Smith), John W. Mattson and Susan Delaney; sister-in-law, Betty Barner from Battle Ground; cousin, Arnold Thogerson originally from Hockinson; 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous dear nieces and nephews. Melba will be buried with John at Willamette National Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate Melba's life on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 12755 NW Dogwood St., Portland, OR 97229. Refreshments will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Melba's name may be made to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), or to Camp and Retreat Ministries, in care of Christ United Methodist Church, 12755 NW Dogwood St, Portland, OR 97229.
