Melvin C. “Clifford” Walman, 79, former longtime Maple area resident, currently of Superior, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center, Superior.

He was born on June 22, 1931, in Maple, the son of Hjalmar and Hannah (Salo) Walman.

He was employed by Olson Brothers Trucking as a truck driver for many years.

Clifford will always be remembered for his mechanical abilities.

He owned and operated Walman Trucking in the Brule area for many years.

Melvin enjoyed deer hunting.

He was a Great Lakes seaman, sailing for the Cleveland Cliffs, Hoyt, Beagly and the Herbert C. Jackson Great Lakes boats.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria; one daughter, Marcella (Richard) Weber, Barnum, Minn.; three sons, James Walman, Brule, Daniel (Tina) Walman, Superior, and Michael (Sheila) Walman, Iron River; five grandchildren, Emma Walman, Brian Walman, Dustin Soyring, Scott Shober and Samyra Walman; two sisters, Lorraine Autio, Maple, and Alice Christianson, Poplar; one brother, Edward (Karen Colby) Walman, Maple; and several nieces and nephews.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will began at noon Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home and continue until the 1 p.m. funeral service with Lay Minister Gary Banker of Concordia Lutheran Church, officiating.

Burial will be at the Finnish Apostolic Cemetery, Maple.

Pallbearers for the service will be Scott Shober, John Autio, Arne Prochazka, Dan Walman, Clyde Gruebele and Dick Webber.
