"Grandma Ruth was much loved."

Ruth Emma Wirtanen, 78, of Battle Ground, WA, died on Aug. 16, 2011 from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease). She was born on Aug. 10, 1933 in Atlantic Mine, MI and lived 77 years of her life at the same address in Battle Ground. Ruth graduated from Battle Ground High School with the class of 1950.

She enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles and especially loved being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

"She was a mother to many others besides her children
and always had so much room in her heart for more."

Ruth is survived by her husband of 58 years, Robert; six sons, Carl and Claire Wirtanen of Palmer, AK, Ed and Liss Wirtanen of Yacolt, WA, Andy and Virpi Wirtanen of Battle Ground, WA, Mike and Lea Wirtanen of Duluth, MN, Matt and Rhonda Wirtanen of Palmer, AK and Mark and Janna Wirtanen of Yacolt, WA; seven daughters, Alice and Johnny Homola of Brush Prairie, WA, Kathy Broderson of Palmer, AK, Carol and Gaylord Stephenson of Yacolt, WA, Karen and Joe Hallstrom of Yacolt, WA, Rebecca and Roger Johansen of Bjerkvik, Norway, Diane Wirtanen of Palmer, AK and Marybeth and Aaron Brucklemyer of Yacolt, WA. She is also survived by 92 grandkids; 78 great-grandkids; two nephews and four nieces. She had numerous friends and children of her heart.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Lydia Wisti; son-in-law, Pete Broderson; brothers, Roy Wisti and John Wisti; nephew, William Wisti; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

Services will be held at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church, 16603 NE 142nd Ave., Brush Prairie, WA at 11:00 a.m. on Sat., Aug. 20, 2011, with viewing at the church Fri., Aug. 19, 2011 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.. Burial will be in Elim Cemetery, Brush Prairie, WA.
